 The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country  It is known for its high standards in teaching and research  University of Delhi is a role-model and path-setter for other universities in the country  The University has grown into one of the largest universities in the country  At present, there are 16 faculties, 86 academic departments, more than 75 colleges and 5 other recognised institutes  Colleges are located and spread all over the city, with more than 1.5 Lakh regular students and nearly 4 Lakh students in non-formal education program.  Two main campuses: North Campus and South Campus  South Campus was established in 1973 to facilitate access for the residents of South Delhi

IT Infrastructure at University of Delhi

 The IT Infrastructure at University of Delhi was designed keeping the following in mind:

 Highest level of availability  Robust & reliable connectivity  Highest level of scalability (specifically planned to match future demands)  Best bandwidth capacity: Currently, at North Campus, National Knowledge Network (NKN) has provided 2 Gbps capacity bandwidth with two 1Gbps links which operate in load balancing and failover mode. For South Campus, NKN has provided a single 1 Gbps capacity link.  Further, NKN is in process of upgrading the bandwidth (using DWDM) to 10Gbps capacity or more on their links.

IT Services provided at University of Delhi

Computer Centre (DUCC) provides the following services through NKN:  Internet  Intranet  Network Management Views  Caching Gateways  Domain Name System Servers  Video Portals  Video Streaming etc.  Using its IT Infrastructure, University of Delhi also provides the following services to its stakeholders:  Web Hosting (Main site, Online Applications, Departments and Colleges websites)  Email Services  Payment Gateway  Co-location Servers for different departments  University of Delhi plans to enhance the use of NKN by using the following additional services:  Co-location of servers  SMS gateways  LISTSERV  International Collaborations with EU-India Grid  Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development (GLORIAD) Network Setup at University of Delhi

9 Role of IT Infrastructure in Governance

ICT has been revolutionizing the way education is being managed and taught today. All universities are now strengthening their IT infrastructure to enable utilizing technology for enhanced governance using:  horizontal and vertical interactions and information flows using technologies such as websites and web portals, emails, chats, etc.  better involvement and participation of students and teachers in governance  more transparency of operations  timely delivery of information and cost benefits  online applications such as admission and registration, examination results etc.  enhanced teaching-learning process through use of video conferencing, Learning Management Systems (LMS).

 Web Portals for Departments and Colleges (http://web.du.ac.in)  Every department and college uses the web portal for facilitating their governance.  University provides these facilities to departments and colleges  The facilities include hosting services on both Linux(Open Source) and Windows operating systems, supporting different programming languages like php, asp, asp.net etc.  The database provisioning is also there with hosting on MySQL and MS-SQL Server

 The Institute of Life-long Learning of the University has developed a huge quantum of e-content which are in the form of e-lessons, e-lectures, video lectures, quizzes etc.
