Dear Students,

Welcome to the new academic year! Over the next several days and weeks, you will encounter many opportunities to get involved on campus. Fraternity & Sorority Recruitment will be occurring the week of September 12-16, 2016. In order for you to make informed choices about your involvement, CSUSM annually informs students of the recognition status of fraternities and sororities.

Should you decide to take part in Fraternity or Sorority Recruitment, there are twelve recognized Greek organizations at CSU San Marcos:

Fraternities Sororities * alpha Kappa Nu Alpha Kappa Alpha Pi Sigma Alpha Psi Rho Alpha

There are two local fraternities that are not recognized by CSUSM, and . Student members of either group may approach you to join their chapter or simply invite you to attend events off campus. Kappa Sigma and Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) are not are not affiliated with our campus in any way and are not recognized by CSUSM. Campus personnel do not advise these fraternities, and their events are wholly independent of CSU San Marcos.

TKE lost recognition in 2005 as a result of underage alcohol use and failure of the organization to maintain academic standing required of recognized fraternities and sororities. Please also be advised that individual members of TKE (also previously known as The Kollege Experience) were the subject of a 2014/15 University administrative and law enforcement investigation into alleged behaviors that posed a threat to the safety of members of the University community including, but not limited to, sexual assault, illegal drug and alcohol possession and distribution, hazing, vandalism, and witness retaliation. Any student who chooses to participate in these types of behaviors on or off campus may be held accountable to the CSU Code of Student Conduct or local law enforcement

Your safety and wellbeing are of paramount importance to the University. Before attending any social event, make informed decisions and use the buddy system – when you go out with friends, agree to keep an eye on one another and go home together. Should you ever have a concern about any organization’s activities (recognized or unrecognized) please contact the Dean of Students Office or Student Life & Leadership. You can find out more information about our twelve recognized Greek organizations, 120+ student organizations, and many other ways to get involved on campus by contacting us at (760) 750-4970 or stopping by University Student Union 3600. We wish you all the best!

In Cougar Spirit, Jason M. Schreiber Director of Student Life & Leadership
