Ballard https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2019-0049 Received May 13, 2019; accepted September 25, 2019 Abstract: This paper analyzes one kind of Ballardian landscape, wastelands created by nuclear explosions, and aims at interpreting them as a study of the un-making of the human-made world. Cityscapes of ruins, crumbling concrete concourses and parking lots, abandoned barracks and military stations, radiation and mutations make Nagasaki, Eniwetok and Mururoa wasteland snap-shots of the future. In the minds of the protagonists, the un-made landscape is strangely soothing; they are attracted by the post-nuclear imagery and gladly embrace the upcoming catastrophe. Nagasaki, Eniwetok and Mururoa are the harbingers of a future where one can experience the nirvana of non-being. In this paper, I discuss the Ballardian un-making of the world and, hopefully, point to the subliminal meaning of atomic explosions in his works. To do this, I first discuss the references to the atomic bomb in Ballard's non-fiction (A User's Guide to the Millennium, J.G.Ballard Conversations). Then, I isolate and describe the subsequent stages of the un-making of the world using his depictions of Nagasaki (Empire of the Sun, The Atrocity Exhibition); Eniwetok (The Atrocity Exhibition, The Terminal Beach), and Mururoa (Rushing to Paradise).     chapter 2 Aeolian Harps in the Desert: Romanticism and Vermilion Sands Thomas Knowles Abstract This chapter explores the legacy of Romanticism in J.G. Ballard’s Vermilion Sands, and the presence of that collection in The Atrocity Exhibition’s “The Summer Cannibals.” Drawing upon the aesthetic theory of Wordsworth’s “Preface” to Lyrical Ballads, as well as the literary criticism of M.H. Abrams, it reads the sonic sculptures and singing statues of Vermilion Sands as warped reincarnations of the Romantic Aeolian harp, played upon by the wind and by the lamia-like muses that figure in each story. Supernatural elements of the landscape take the form of jewelled insects, sand rays, singing statues and sonic sculptures, as well as sentient architecture and clothing, and lamia-like faded screen actresses and heiresses. Surrounded by sand seas, multi-coloured sand reefs and fused lakes, the natural world is as exhausted as its beach- fatigued human residents. The denizens and visitors of Vermilion Sands are affectless, bored, capricious and always on the lookout for new ways to stimulate their decadent imaginations.

Ballard’s 1974 novel Concrete Island (Ballard 2008), in order to situate it within its historical and political contexts and to consider its relevance to contemporary debates on architecture, landscape and cultural practice. Separately and together, the articles gathered here, inter alia, trace the literary genealogies of the novel; illuminate the historical and political contexts that the novel comments on; explicate the ambivalences of the various discursive and technological modernities acting within the narrative; focus on the distinctive island materialities which Ballard sketches throughout the text, and explore the heightened embodied sensibilities through which its architect protagonist, Maitland, navigates this unintentional landscape. In so doing, the articles collected here advance new readings of the novel that build on the extant Ballard literature, and the special issue as a whole reasserts the prominence of Concrete Island within the wider contexts of Ballard’s career and the culture of the period in which he was writing. We conclude by suggesting that Ballard’s novel presents us with an anamorphic portrait that complicates and strains contemporaneous narratives of English modernity, consumer culture and technological progress. Ballard came to write the ‘Introduction’ to the Vintage edition (1994) of Concrete Island some twenty years after the novel’s first publication, he pointedly re-inscribed the phrase ‘elaborately signalled landscape’ from the period in his writing career in which the novel was written. The phrase does not appear in Concrete Island itself, but Ballard – who characteristically employed repetition as a cohesive stylistic device – had used it twice previously in Crash, the novel that immediately preceded Concrete Island (and the book with which it is, in many respects, twinned): Vaughan’s body, with its unsavoury skin and greasy pallor, took on a hard, mutilated beauty within the elaborately signalled landscape of the motorway. The concrete buttresses along the base of the Western Avenue overpass, angular shoulders spaced at fifty-yard intervals, brought together the sections of Vaughan’s scarred physique.2 Ballard’s surreal unification of man and motorway in multiple planes – a sharing of shoulders in yellow sodium light, as if the concrete buttresses were supporting Vaughan’s ‘scarred physique’ – is echoed in Concrete Island in the way that the body of the marooned architect, Robert Maitland, quickly becomes at one with its waste-land
