ROCKLEDGE — Perhaps the biggest challenge facing the advanced manufacturing industry today is finding and attracting a qualified workforce. And advanced manufacturing is tied directly to the aerospace industry, as well as many other segments of the economy. With the national unemployment rate at a 50–year low in America — and an abundance of opportunities across most sectors of the job market — many employers find themselves scrambling to recruit talent in order to continue to grow their enterprises. “During the Great Recession, we had more than 100 people for every job opening,” said Judy Blanchard, vice president for industry relations at CareerSource Brevard, part of the CareerSource Florida statewide network. “Today, we have job openings and there is little talent to fill them. So with the growth we have experienced comes workforce challenges. But we can’t just sit back and wait for skilled workers to show up at our doorstep.” According to the National Bureau of Economic Re- search, American businesses continue to add new jobs, extending consecutive monthly growth to a record 120 months, averaging 167,000 net–new jobs every month of 2019. Blanchard said CareerSource Brevard “is a demand– driven system. Whatever our industry demands in terms of workforce development, we need to be responsive. That may change from time–to–time, but the foundational building blocks are to pay attention to what the industry needs are, and work closely with the workforce ecosystem — the key stakeholders — to develop a solution. Then it’s a win–win for everybody.” Locally, there is demand for skilled technical talent in the aerospace industry. Advanced manufacturing skill– sets and competencies are needed to build hardware for that industry. CareerSource Brevard is answering that challenge and is rolling out a new pre–apprenticeship program to develop the aerospace industry workforce. On Super Bowl eve, hundreds of people will be making their way to Wickham Park Pavilion in Melbourne for the annual “Wild Game Night,” an event that brings the community together to enjoy an over– the–top feast and some socializing. The cookout is put on by the Melbourne Rotary Club. Their signature fundraiser attracted about 500 people last year. “We’ve been hosting this event for more than two decades and people are still discovering it every year,” said Justin Morton, who coordinates the event with Melbourne Rotary Club colleague Sean Carmichael, and with the support of the Greater West Melbourne Athletic Association, the fundraiser’s main beneficiary. “Our overall net number of attendees for the 2018 event was higher than the last two Wild Game Nights,” Morton said. “This is the Melbourne Rotary Club’s big fundraiser of the year,” added Carmichael. “We go all out to make this event as enjoyable as we can for the community. And it’s always a lot of fun. People really like the spread of food.” “And Wild Game Night is not only for meat lovers, but also for vegetarians,” said Morton. “There are a lot of vegetarians who come to this event. We have ‘swamp cabbage,’ coleslaw, baked beans, hush puppies, and other selections for vegetarians.” Morton of Commerce Properties Group in Cocoa, and Carmichael of Glenn’s Tire & Service Co. in Melbourne, have been involved with the Melbourne Rotary Club for years. They’ve held leadership and board roles with the nonprofit organization. They are both University of Florida graduates. The 24th annual Wild Game Night Cookout is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, Super Bowl eve, at Wickham Park Pavilion in Melbourne. The event is open to the public. In addition to food, there will be beer, wine, and soft drinks. Disc jockey Tommy Vee will be entertaining with a mix of oldies and other music. Activities will include a bonfire, 50–50 raffles, door prizes, and dancing. “We see Wild Game Night as the local pregame event for the Super Bowl,” said Morton, adding that the 2020 Super Bowl will be hosted at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
