TEAM NOTES:

NEXT MAN UP With Brian Dumoulin and John Marino missing practice on Wednesday, there may be an opportunity for taxi squad member Kevin Czuczman to see his first NHL game action since April 13, 2014 when he was a member of the New York Islanders. Originally signed by Pittsburgh on July 11, 2017, Czuczman has 13 games of NHL experience, recording two assists. The veteran blueliner has served as an alternate captain in each of his three seasons with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and has notched 120 points (24G-96A) in 374 career AHL games. Pittsburgh already has four blueliners all missing action due to various injuries:

Zach Trotman – seven games missed Mike Matheson – five games missed Marcus Pettersson – three games missed Juuso Riikola – three games missed

O’CONNOR DEBUTS Forward Drew O’Connor made his NHL debut on Tuesday night in Boston, skating 10:51 minutes and picked up his first career NHL point assisting on Jason Zucker’s goal in the third period.

The 22-year old, who signed with the Penguins last March as an undrafted college free agent out of Dartmouth, is now the fourth player that has been on Pittsburgh’s roster or taxi squad that played for an ivy league school, joining Anthony Angello (Cornell), Sam Lafferty (Brown) and John Marino (Harvard).

O’Connor also is now the fifth player on Pittsburgh’s roster to record their first point in their NHL debut:

Malkin sits in the top-5 in multiple Pittsburgh all time ranks including goals (417, 4th), assists (662, 3rd), points (1,079, T-3rd) and power-play goals (150, 2nd). With a point tonight, Malkin can surpass Jaromir Jagr for sole possession of third place on the team’s all-time points list:

MC-CANN YOU BELIEVE IT? While the Penguins have been accumulating points these past three games, so has Jared McCann. With an assist on Jason Zucker’s second-period goal at Boston on Jan. 26., McCann extended his point streak (2G-1A) to three games. Additionally, McCann has points (2G-3A) in five of the Penguins’ seven games this season and all three road games (3A).

If McCann were to record a point tonight, he will tie his career-long point streak of four games set on two occasions:

OH KAPANEN, MY KAPANEN Newly-acquired forward Kasperi Kapanen got on the board for the first time in a Penguins sweater on Tuesday night with a clutch third-period game- tying goal to force overtime. After missing the first three games of the season, he has picked up three points (1G-2A) in four games, helping Pittsburgh to a 3-0-1 record during that time. Since making his Pittsburgh debut, only Sidney Crosby (1G-4A) has recorded more points than Kapanen.

He enters tonight’s game with six points (3G-3A) in his last five games against the Bruins.

PENS &PENS FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS Penguins players will wear “Hockey Talks” decals on their helmets during tonight’s game against as part of an important NHL initiative to raise awareness and help end the stigma around mental health.

The Hockey Talks initiative began in 2013, following the tragic passing of Canucks player Rick Rypien at age 27 in 2011. Rick was passionate about reducing the stigma associated with mental health by becoming a spokesperson on the issue before losing his own battle. The Penguins are one of 18 NHL teams that participate in the initiative.

In Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has partnered with EMBRACE Pittsburgh to hold the team’s second annual “Break the Ice Day,” also on January 28. The joint goal of Break the Ice Day and the NHL’s Hockey Talks campaign is to create an environment where people feel comfortable talking about their mental health.

NOTABLES FROM LAST GAME (JAN. 26 AT BOS) *The Penguins extended their point streak to five games after trailing in all five games. *Drew O’Connor is the first New Jersey-born player to play for the Penguins. Previously, Pittsburgh was one of four teams (Vegas, Winnipeg, Nashville) to not have a NJ-born player suit up for them. *Kris Letang skated a game-high 29:57 minutes. Letang now has the second highest TOI in the NHL with 193:02 minutes. *Cody Ceci played in his 500th career game, skating 17:09 minutes. *Brandon Tanev delivered a team-high five hits extending his league-leading hit total to 43.
