Through a review of past Chumash archaeological and rock art studies, I discuss where previous research is lacking and how that research was fragmentary due to focusing only on specific geographic areas or linguistic regions. As rock art is an artefact fixed within the terrain, I further argue it has a potential connection to the topography--particularly its relationship to Chumash landscapes and taskscapes by applying both formal and informed methodologies at multiple scales. By modifying the tenets of ANT to create a framework that uses the rock art data to define space, analyse its heterogeneity and connectivity and study its topographic entrenchment, this research conceptualises rock art’s networks. To conduct this research, I collated a large body of spatial and descriptive information for 254 rock art sites and associated archaeology. Spatial analyses were performed at multiple scales using GIS as a heuristic to conceptualise site clustering, landscape entrenchment and anisotropic movement for the collated data. While the rock art sites were used to define the multi-scalar spaces, results show that the identity of the sites change throughout space and time where rock art itself is a network and not exclusive to one specific Chumash network. Analysis of the data shows that the topographic setting entrenches the rock art and begins to represent the dynamic assembly of its heterogeneous network relations. Movement through the landscape reflects how the sites were connected or structured within their landscapes and taskscapes. Overall it reflects rock art’s interrelationships to the networked economic, social, ideological and political organisations of the Chumash and their rich ceremonial practices. Therefore, the Chumash rock art networks were as complex, dynamic, variable and heterogeneous as Chumash society and the rock art panels themselves. The sheepherder’s arborglyphs are in part a type of history, art, and literature that is inherently linked to location. Arborglyphs disintegrate as the aspen trees they are on die so it is important to locate and document them before they are lost. This research was guided by three questions: a) which environmental variables are associated with the location of arborglyphs, b) are arborglyphs carved more frequently on the uphill side of the tree, and c) does the Taylor Grazing Act influence quantity of arborglyphs? Nine environmental variables were investigated as they related to the location of arborglyphs. The environmental features studied were: elevation, aspect, slope, distance to surface water, depth to water table, soil drainage, soil depth, precipitation, and temperature.

Some improvements and past activities are acceptable within roadless areas. Inventoried roadless areas are identified in a set of maps contained in the Forest Service Roadless Area Conservation Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), Volume 2, November 2000. These areas may contain important environmental values that warrant protection and are, as a general rule, managed to preserve their roadless characteristics. In the past, roadless areas were evaluated as potential additions to the National Wilderness Preservation System. Roadless areas have maintained their ecological and social values, and are important both locally and nationally. Recognition of the values of roadless areas is increasing as our population continues to grow and demand for outdoor recreation and other uses of the Forests rises. These unroaded and undeveloped areas provide the Forests with opportunities for potential wilderness, as well as non-motorized recreation, commodities and amenities. The original Forest Plans evaluated Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) data from the mid- 1980s and recommended wilderness designation for some areas. Most areas were left in a roadless, non- motorized use status. This revision of Forest Plans analyzes a new and more complete land inventory of inventoried roadless areas as well as other areas identified by the public during scoping.

Saturday morning we'll get an early start and head into the "Nopah Range" Wilderness Area located along the eastern range bordering Chicago Valley; first we'll warm up by trudging across a broad alluvial fan, then we'll make our way up through a sometimes tight and rocky canyon before getting up onto a steep and loose, rocky and thorny ridgeline that will bring us up onto the narrow and rocky summit ridge, which we'll ascend to the summit of Pahrump Point. After thoroughly enjoying the reportedly exquisite views up there, we'll return the way we came in for a day's total of 8 RT mi with 3,400' gain. We'll make camp where we're parked and will celebrate the weekend under a nearly full moon sky with a traditional DPS Potluck Happy Hour.

The SUP will be issued for 52 recreation sites located in the Santa Barbara, Ojai, Mt. Pinos, Santa Lucia, and Monterey ranger districts. Last week, the Forest Service announced that it would issue the SUP to Parks Management Company, and anticipates issuing a formal decision on this matter on October 17. Our organizations represent thousands of residents from throughout the Central Coast and beyond who visit the Los Padres National Forest for camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and enjoying the great outdoors. We share the Forest Service’s goal of finding innovative ways to improve recreation sites throughout the forest, particularly in the face of declining funding from Congress and limited staffing resources. We also share a grave concern with the wholesale transferring of one of the most fundamental roles of the Forest Service – recreation management – to a private, for-profit corporation. Fees could increase significantly at many of the privatized sites, and the Adventure Pass will no longer be honored at them, meaning that the public will once again need to pay to simply access and enjoy these public lands, even if they are not using any amenities like restroooms or picnic tables.
