BOOTHY’S BIT

The Club AGM is on Thursday, 18th September at Nelson Cricket Club— details on p4. Please try to attend if you can. Better still, take part in the 5000M track race first.

Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round As reported recently in the Harrier, the club is seeking a new race organiser for the Pendle Round. Given the race’s long history (as the Half Tour of Pendle originally), and its association with Stan Bradshaw, the committee is keen for one of our members to take over the organisation of the race. If you are interested in taking on the role, please contact Jim Hickie or Mike Eddleston for more information. Don’t worry if you’ve never organised a race before, there are plenty of members to give support and advice.

Congratulations to Briony Holt Last month’s cover star, Briony, has been confirmed as joint FRA English GU12 Champion. Well done Briony!

Thieveley Pike Fell Race 11am Saturday, 27th September If you are not intending to run at Thieveley—or even if you are! - I need volunteers to help with parking, registration and marshalling the race. Please contact me if you are able to help. Also, Mike Eddleston still needs help with Pendleton FR on 23rd August.

The Gerry McCabe 5K Brownhouse Trail Race takes place at 7pm on 23rd September from Oxford Pub, Whitworth Road, Rochdale, Andy O’Sullivan is organising this race to honour Gerry’s contribution to our sport, the Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix, in particular. Please support it if you can. All proceeds to Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity & Turning Point. Details in fixtures on p37

BARLEY CAR PARK

A plea from Barley Parish Council: Please Pay £1 Car Park charge on each visit. As Pendle Council has withdrawn funding for the toilets at Barley Car Park, they will only remain open if Barley Parish Council receives sufficient revenue from the car park users.

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers Annual General Meeting 8pm Thursday 18 th September Nelson Cricket Club, Surrey Road, Nelson BB9 7TY.

The club 5000m track race will precede the AGM at the adjacent Seedhill Athletic Track at 7pm. A Junior race will be held at 6.40pm (number of laps will depend on age). These races are FREE to enter. Refreshments will be provided after the AGM.

The AGM elects the club’s committee for the forthcoming year, and any member can stand (a proposer and seconder are required) for any committee post. The Secretary, Men’s Cross Country Captain, and Kit Manager do not intend to stand for re-election. The Membership Secretary, and Ladies’ Fell Captain are happy not to stand for re-election if a replacement can be found. If you are interested in standing for a committee post, then please get in touch with myself or any committee member to find out what is involved. We always need more help in running our club, so please consider if you can give up some of your time to help make all that we do even better!

The club’s committee runs the club on behalf of the members. I’d particularly encourage members who have not served on the club’s committee before to stand for the ‘Committee Member without Portfolio’ post. Committee meetings are held monthly on Monday evenings, and this committee post provides an opportunity for a member to bring the ‘voice of the membership’ to committee meetings.

Finally, please attend the AGM if you can. This is your opportunity to vote for next year’s committee as well as ask questions at the ‘Open Forum’ that follows the formal meeting.

The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon

This was my first competitive outing for 9 months since tearing my Achilles at the FRA relays in October, I hadn’t planned to enter it but Kath had to pull out with an injury which left Katy Thompson short of a partner. I have been doing a lot of walking recently and had helped Katy 3 weeks prior on her successful Joss Naylor Traverse so felt fit enough for the event.

The weekend promised to be dry and sunny and with our 9.20am start at Patterdale there was no rush to get up to the Lakes. Day 1 took us from Deepdale into Grisedale with an awful climb out over to Glenridding and onto the Helvellyn range via Sticks Pass. There followed a long contour along the western side of the range to finish at Steel End farm on Thirlmere. The controls were obvious features with no real technical aspects to them, and with route choice between it didn’t become a long procession over the fells. Unlike the OMM they were also busy with a number of pairs sat down at each one resting in the sunshine, lacking our competitive edge to keep moving. Total for the day 15m and 6,000’ in just under 7 hours.

We met up with friends at the overnight camp, but as it turned to rain couldn’t sit about and enjoy the sunset. The evening meal is always a pleasure, a pasta and ham dish, then supa noodles followed by chocolate sponge and custard (thanks Katy). The results were posted later on and we found ourselves in 31 st position out of 67 in the Kirkfell class.

Day 2 dawned with mist on the hills but the prospect of it clearing rapidly to bring another day of sunshine. Our route took us back onto the ridge dropping off Brown Cove towards the dam below Catstycam; fortunately Katy had been down here on a previous MM and convinced me there was a path. The next checkpoints were at the lake end of Glenridding and then upper Grisedale. From here we posted the 5 th fastest time of the day in crossing Deepdale Hause to find a control below Hart Crag. The finish was along the ridge to return to Deepdale and complete a great couple of days in the fells.

There was more running the second day and we felt more competitive covering the 14m and 6,000’ in 5½ hours to finish 28 th overall, we also finished 1 st mixed vets pairing.

For those not sure about 2 day mountain marathons this is an ideal starter, warmer and drier than the OMM and more social with options to buy refreshments, including beer at the overnight camp. There are 2 solo courses and 6 for pairs covering a range of distance and climbing targeting completion in 7 -10 hours over the 2 days. Mike Wallis

SUMMER SERIES 2014 Race 2 & 3: Up & Down, Worston 8th July It was great to see 25 junior & senior members, plus guests, taking part so enthusiastically in the 2 nd & 3 rd Summer Series races from Wosrston to Pendle trig and back. Despite Capt Motley’s best efforts both races were won by ’s Josh Boyle – at nearly 14 years old, a prodigious talent (Josh, not Dave!). Another guest, Accrington RR’s Andrew Priory was 3 rd & 1 st Vet in both races, as well as picking up a prize with his downhill estimate. His haul was matched by Ivan Whigham, who was 1 st V50 uphill and had the best estimate for both races! Our juniors performed really well – especially uphill where Jordan Mcdonald, Tom Bradley & Briony Holt showed their elders how it should be done. More practice needed on the downhill though! Jordan, Alice Pier and Ryan Clarke picked up prizes for their great estimated times. Once again, thanks go to Paul Healey for his organisation, time keeping and compilation of results, as well as to Susan Farnworth & Phil Thornber for their help on the evening. Covering Old Ground

A quiet month because of holidays -

15 years ago (August 1999) • Early planning was underway for a 'Millenium Relay & Walter Wilkinson Memorial Run to take place next June (2000). The route was planned taking in the club's race venues – Barley (Pendle FR, Half Tour FR, Full Tour FR); Bolton-by-Bowland (Bolton-by-Bowland FR); Worston (Mearley Clough, Summer Series (Downhill); Pendleton (Pendleton FR); Bowley Hill (Summer Series Bowley Hill Race); Oswaldtwistle (Summer Series Ossy Moors FR); Accrington (Great Hameldon Hill FR and Summer Series Tour of Hameldons) (Thieveley Pike FR); (Cross Country); Seedhill Track (AGM 5K track races). Members who wished to run would be selected in teams at random.

• Wendy Dodds was the feature of this issue – written by Bill Smith - “Wendy, who now lives in Milnthorpe, has been one of Clayton's most prolific and successful fell racers since joining the club from Airedale & Spen Valley in November 1982....”. Bill wrote about Wendy's successful run in the Langdale coming in first Lady in a time of 2 hours 57 mins....10 mins aheaad of second despite taking a 'wrong' route. Katy Thompson was third, 14 mins behind Wendy. Wendy was 66 th overall out of 373 finishers. Wendy went on to be first in the Tanky Stokes' Marsden-Edale Trog a couple of months later in a time of 3 hours 54 mins and 21 st overall. Later in the Haworth Hobble (Wuthering Hike now), Wendy ran with Sarah Rowell ( I remember sharing a bush with Sarah before the start) – the pair ran out clear winners and set a new Ladies record in 4 hours 38mins....18mins inside the old record. A couple of weeks later Wendy undertook the Manx Mountain Marathon and came second finisher in the standard class in a time of 5 hours 31 mins (which would have placed her eleventh in the elite class). A little later Wendy achieved her fastest ever Three Peaks, a week after doing three hours seventeen seconds in the London Marathon – she finished in 3.37 (third Lady) behind Sarah Rowell and Cheryl Cook but was first in the Vets class.

• Kath Wallis completed the Pendle Way finishing half an hour inside her schedule.

• Another Lady featured in this issue was Nurse Alison Smith (Dugdale)....Alison started running when she went to University and joined Manchester University XC club (she had been a keen swimmer). When asked if she did any speed work, Alison replied “No. I'm allergic to it”. “I try to run three times a week for over an hour”. Alison stated that she ran for enjoyment ( I think you can tell that by the smile on her face).

• Walt Wilkinson's wife, Beryl, thanked the club for raising £741 for Marie Curie Cancer Care (who had supported Walt in his difficult time).

• Tony Chew was runner of the month for his win at Hendon Brook In the results:- Bowley Hill Race (Clayton Summer Series): 57 members took part led home by winner Mark Brown but Pete Hindle made the best guess being 3 secs out.

Walter Wilkinson Memorial Stone Replaced in Walt’s ‘Back Yard’.

On Saturday 5th July a group of members replaced Walt Wilkinson's Memorial Stone on Ossy Moors. The memorial was removed in 2011 because of the Windmills being erected on the moors.

PENDLE MEMORIAL FELL RACE Sun 21 st September 3.32 Miles (5.34KM)/1007’(307M) Start 11.30am Presentation: 2pm (food only if pre-entered) Registration: Wellsprings Restaurant BB7 9HN

Many thanks to Katy Thompson for the write up about Judith Taylor in the April edition of the Clayton Harriers newsletter. Judith’s ‘memorial stone’ is also shared with Alan Heywood. For those who were members back then, they will remember the tragedy that befell us while climbing Mont Blanc (the highest mountain in the French Alps at 15,781’) 20 years ago this September (1994). Neil Wilkinson, Graham Huddleston, Alan and I summited Mont Blanc but, after descending only 600’, the weather turned drastically and we were caught in a ‘whiteout’ and horrendous storm. With the snow and ice around us starting to melt, along with the crashes of thunder and possibility of avalanche we decided to ‘snow hole’ and dig in. We spent 22 hours trapped before the weather started to ease and Graham and I made the attempt to get to the nearest ‘emergency hut’. By this time Alan was already suffering from hypothermia and hallucinating, so Neil stayed with him. We made the ‘hut’, rescuing two Frenchman along the way, but when the helicopter arrived Alan was in a coma. We all spent 5 days in hospital with frostbite, Alan never recovered. He was flown by air ambulance back to Preston Neurogical Hospital, but by the time myself and Neil had driven the 16 hours’ journey home they had turned the life support machine off.

A very traumatic time for all involved.

There were over 400 people at the funeral.

It’s taken me nearly 20 years to write this brief account and a lot of you will not have known Alan, but he loved life and lived it on the ‘edge’. He loved to race and enjoyed more than a few beers after, so I hope you will join us at the ‘memorial race’ up to the ‘stone’ on top of Mearley Moor, across to the main path and back down to the Wellsprings. Phil Taylor (Judith’s husband) is coming down from the Isle of Skye and his family will be joining us along with Neil and his family. I have yet to track Graham down. I have kept the course short enough to run or walk in good time for the presentation which should be around 2pm. I am using John Lloyd and Cannonball Events (please see entry form on his website www.cannonballevents.co.uk) to advertise and take pre-entries, so 16 that I can get an idea of numbers for food. I am paying for the food. You will only receive a food voucher on collection of your race number at registration if you pre-entered. You can still enter on the day and the race is open to all clubs. Any profit generated will be used to renovate and upkeep the ‘memorial stone’ that you will pass in the race. I know we have lost many other friends and family along the way and hope this race will go some way to remembering them all.

Many thanks for your support.

COMMITTEE NEWS

MAY 13 members were present. The main discussions and decisions were: • Treasurer: EA affiliation fees paid to EA. Pendle FR profit of £696. • Membership: Discussion over the number of different training groups in the region run by members without coordination. It was considered that we need to ensure that club locations are advertised to get core sessions creating a base. Do we consider family membership to retain more members, or alternate ladies/men’s training nights to allow families to participate more? • Juniors: Received letter of thanks from the parents for the Gt Hameldon race. Grant received for £8900 from ‘Run ’ for coaching etc. for the juniors; commendation has to go to Marion and Andy for securing this. • Captains: Road – Planning now for the Witton Park relays on 26 th June Fell – 3 teams ran at the Calderdale Way relay A team 5 th , B 26 th and Ladies 9th. • Media: The twitter account is very active for the club. Additional material considered for the website: details of coach sessions and agenda, plus more photos. • Kit: Vest sales are 50/50 old to new. The question of providing a vest for new members is to be considered after the accounts have been presented. • FRA Relays 2015: Subcommittee with Jean / Marie and Mike W has met to establish requirements and posts for additional members. Mike to chair the meetings, and arrange next meeting. • Races Gt Hameldon: Q’s at the stiles created concern and 1 spectator took it upon himself to dismantle the fence. A letter is to be written to the owning farmer apologising for this behaviour. The complaint received that Clayton members jumped the fence rather than queue has been raised, no action to be taken. Tour of Pendle: Potential to trial SIdent timing, Mike E to contact Kieran. Timing gadget replacement to be sought.

JUNE Again, 13 members were present. The main discussions and decisions were: • April 2014 issue of the EA rules and a memory stick with welfare forms and details to be sent to Andy Stubbs. • Juniors: Mentors for juniors need to have had CRB checks, note their role is to provide advice only and no intent to provide coaching skills Those juniors who are attending the club organised training must have parental consent form submitted and a medical questionnaire. • Captains: Fell – currently 3 rd LV in English FRA F40 Team champion- ships with strong results at the Ennerdale FR. Katy Thompson is running the Joss Naylor Challenge on 21 st June in aid of charity Training/coaching: The club’s qualified coaches are: Marion, Andy Armstrong and John Roche. None specific for the fells. It was agreed to support Tom for a level 1 course. The winter group is split between venues with no awareness across the membership of who runs where and pace/distance. Needs to be advertised through the web. Debate for Tuesday evening summer times to bring forward start from 7.00 pm. Candice proposed a 6.45 start time, seconded by Richard. This was defeated 7against to 2 for: training remains at 7.00pm in summer. • Media: Further improvements identified as mid-week feed for the races. Agreed to put a quarterly survey to the membership covering a range of topics: training, branding, venues, communications and media. Quarterly to set a habit of expecting the survey to generate greater interest and feedback. Chris proposed inclusion of short video clips of races, primarily the starts to show wealth of Clayton talent competing. • FRA Relays 2015: Subcommittee has met to establish requirements and posts for additional members, meeting every 4 weeks and will report into this committee. A separate financial account will be opened by Mike E for the duration. • Social: 2015 presentation date to be booked for 28 th Feb or 21 st March dependent on availability of the venue. • Races: Gt Hameldon: Jim H has spoken to individual who dismantled the fence. Matter closed. • Committee posts 2014/2015: The following have made requests to change their role next year: Jean willing to continue but to canvass the ladies to seek a new captain Richard and Val will not be standing Mike W will not be continuing as secretary.

Date of Next Meetings: Monday 14 th July & 11th August at 7.00pm; venue Peel Park Hotel, Accrington

CLAYTON JUNIORS’ TRAINING Thursday Training; Spirit of Sport, 6.00-7.00. This is an indoor circuit session to improve speed and agility. Cost £2 Saturday Training; 08.45 at Towneley Park for endurance running and/or Parkrun. Please bring clothing that is suitable for the weather and running conditions. Age Limits for Training Sessions; There's no minimum age limit to be a junior member of Clayton Harriers (although the minimum age to compete in a Fell race is six years on race day) however we have decided to apply a minimum age to attend the coached training sessions. Juniors must be in school year 5 or above. This applies only to new recruits not to those already attending. The main reason for this change is that most juniors below this age limit struggle to maintain focus during structured coaching (especially endurance work) and gain little from the session. We appreciate that there are exceptions to this however, they are fairly rare. EMAIL ADDRESS FOR JUNIORS: [email protected]

Tuesday Summer Training Venues April-September 2014

The format of our summer training sessions for this year will be similar to last year’s. On Tuesday evening, throughout the summer, fell training will follow the usual format of group runs (group according to ability/inclination/level of fitness) from the following venues, at the time stated:

Date Time Venue

5, 12, 19, 26* August 7.00pm Peel Park Hotel, Accrington

2, 9*, 16, 23, 30 September 6.30pm Sabden Village Car Park

* Summer Series Race

All members are welcome to take part in the Tuesday Fell Runs, The usual arrangement is for 2/3 groups to run from each venue for between one and two hours, although this can vary according to numbers, weather and what members have done at the weekend.

If you are new to the Club’s summer training runs/fell running, please make yourself known to a Committee member or group leader before the run and we will attempt to place you in the most appropriate group.

All members should ensure that they carry some emergency/extra clothing with them on the run: wind (water)-proof top, over trousers, hat and gloves. The weather can change very quickly on the fells. If you, or someone else in the group has an accident, you can very quickly become cold or hypothermic, even on the most pleasant of evenings. It’s also a good idea to carry a drink and some emergency food (sweets, chocolate bar), in case you are out longer than you expect—it has been known for a group leader to get carried away occasionally.

See page 39 for details of 2014 Summer Series Races.
