The Search for the Maryland Darter
The Search for the Maryland Darter The search is on for the Maryland darter, a federally-endangered fish that has not been seen for over 20 years and is feared extinct. Biologists from Frostburg State University, Marshall University in West Virginia, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) have teamed up to determine once and for all if this rare species still swims in Maryland wa- ters. In 2009 and 2010, they will be surveying the waters of the Susquehanna River between Conowingo Dam and Havre de Grace and three Harford County streams for this exceedingly rare species. What is the Maryland darter? The Maryland darter is one the rarest fishes in the world and is only known from Swan, Gasheys, and Deer creeks in Harford County, Maryland. It is a small bottom-dwell- ing species related to yellow perch and walleye. Unlike these other fishes, adult Maryland darters are small; reach- ing a maximum size of just under 3 inches on a diet com- prised of small insects and snails. It was last seen in 1988 in Deer Creek. It was designed to represent the overall character, culture, and history of Marcus Hook and incorporates the Borough’s motto “The Cornerstone of Pennsylvania.” The diamond shape represents the quality in the Borough. The Municipal Building façade was chosen as a unique Marcus Hook landmark. The people in front of it represent the diverse community support and the public/private partnerships which have contributed to the vitality of the Borough. The sunburst at the top shows the bright and promising future ahead. Wrapping the two sides are sycamore trees which are native to the Borough and reflect the new growth, attention to the environment, and concern for the beautification of the community. The straight and wavy stars and stripes lend a patriotic feel. The waves represent Marcus Hook’s proud beginning as a waterfront settlement. The five stars refer to the five star quality of life as well as the five war memorials throughout the Borough. FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. Swarr 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT IMPROVING ROCK RAMP FISHWAYS FOR SMALL-BODIED GREAT PLAINS FISHES The growing global need to improve the longitudinal connectivity of lotic systems is often met by using fish passage structures (fishways). When designing fishways in the past, biologists and engineers focused primarily on strong swimming species such as salmonids. However, the majority of riverine species in the interior United States are not salmonids and may be excluded by fishways built using salmonid criteria due to lower swimming abilities and/or behavioral differences. I designed and built a 9.1-m long adjustable hydraulic research flume at the Colorado State University Foothills Fisheries Laboratory (FFL) to test fish passage and evaluate the effects of grade (slopes of 2 – 10%, in 2% increments) on the passage success of three Great Plains fish species: Flathead Chub Platygobio gracilis, Stonecat Noturus flavus, and Arkansas Darter Etheostoma cragini. A 6.1-m long rock ramp fishway was installed in the flume and four PIT tag antennas were used to detect full or partial passage success. In order to test the key assumption that tagging does not affect fish performance, I evaluated the impacts of 8-mm PIT tags on Arkansas Darter and found no significant difference in the survival and swimming abilities of PIT tagged fish versus non-tagged fish. -

Articles Extinction Rates in North American Freshwater Fishes, 1900–2010 NOEL M. BURKHEAD Widespread evidence shows that the modern rates of extinction in many plants and animals exceed background rates in the fossil record. In the present article, I investigate this issue with regard to North American freshwater fishes. From 1898 to 2006, 57 taxa became extinct, and three distinct populations were extirpated from the continent. Since 1989, the numbers of extinct North American fishes have increased by 25%. From the end of the nineteenth century to the present, modern extinctions varied by decade but significantly increased after 1950 (post-1950s mean = 7.5 extinct taxa per decade). -

Some 212 specific and subspecific names have been pro- posed for the approximately 100 vahd described species. About a dozen species await description. As part of a long-term study of these fishes, we have prepared this catalog of type specimens. We hope that our efforts will be of value in furthering systematic research and stabilizing the nomenclature of this most fascinating group of North American fishes. In preparing this catalog we have attempted to examine or at least to verify the location of the type specimens of all nominal forms of the three presently recognized genera of darters: Percina, Ammo- crypta, and Etheostoma. By type specimens we mean holotypes, lectotypes, syntypes, paralectotypes, and paratypes.
