. A FESTIVAL SUCCESS!

CPFJ's 34th Annual Jazz Festival opened on Thursday, Aug 7th with a roar to a sold outJazzin' on the Pride riverboat cruise aboard the Pride of the Susquehanna. Dave Stahl and his Quintet featuring Tom Strohman provided the excitement with their great sound to an appreciative crowd.

Friday night...Jazz Party, The 1500 Condominium...opened on the terrace with the swinging sounds of Ben Mauger's New Orleans Six. Many patrons of Cafe 1500 and Crawdaddy's paused to listen as did many neighbors and passersby. The action then moved indoors with Crawdaddy's honoring Harrisburg legend Sammy Banks (celebrating his 94th birthday) with music provided by the Dan Stuber Trio featuring Sam at the drums. Cafe 1500 hosted the Jonathan Ragonese Trio with Peter Paulsen and Chris Hanning to a totally packed house. As the sun set, the patrons lucky enough to hold a ticket moved to Jazz Under the Stars on the rooftop. As the (almost) full moon rose and fireworks provided a colorful backdrop, guests enjoyed soulful jazz presented by Diane Wilson Bedford, Jimmy Wood, Victor Dvoskin, Larry Marshall and special guest Tim Warfield, Jr. - the entire evening was a great celebration of the art of jazz!

Saturday afternoon arrived just in time for a jazz picnic! And what a picnic it was… under the tent at Indian Echo Caverns, five hours of some of the sweetest sounds this side of the Susquehanna. The Larry Marshall Quartet featuring pianist Jim Wood, bassist Willie Morales, and guest trumpeter Bob Meashey, CPFJ Youth Band directed by Ron Waters, tg Divergence (a duo performance by the father/son team of Tom and Greg Strohman), the Sonia V Quartet (with a special vocal guest appearance by Sonia's daughter) andNo Last Call treated the laid back crowd to standards, blues, pop tunes, originals, and everything in between. My personal favorite was when Sonia V's daughter Jennifer was moving through a particularly soulful version of Moondance, and Sonia herself was sitting in the audience singing along – the look of pride on her face was precious! Topping it all off was the No Last Call band – the grooviest, hippest, most dangerous street band Harrisburg has ever seen!

Sunday's festivities began with a Jam Session at The Timbers in Mt. Gretna. Jonathan Ragonese led the session backed by Peter Paulsen (bass) Chris Hanning (drums) and Andy Roberts (keyboard). A variety of local musicians and students joined in for an afternoon of pure pleasure. The hospitality of the Briody/Roberts family was much in evidence as guests enjoyed great food and drink along with the music.

Our collaboration with Music at Gretna closed out the Festival at the Gretna Playhouse on Sunday night. Hendrik Meurkens and his New York Samba Jazz Quartet entertained the audience with sultry samba rhythms accompanied by witty narration. Later, bassist Lee Smith reminded us why Philadelphia is still an important jazz city. His set taken from his new CD "Sittin' on a Secret" included mostly his own compositions. The sounds of nature around the Playhouse complimented this swinging set.

Our thanks to all of our outstanding musicians and our stellar volunteers for helping to produce a great festival! If you couldn’t atten this year, stay tuned for some exciting news about next year's festival. 8 CPFJ thanks our 2014 Festival Contributors Keeping the music playing!

Warren E. Guenther 9 Keith Charles Mohler . 1952 - 2014

The Central Pennsylvnia jazz community mourns the loss of our CPFJ Board of Directors member, jazz bassist, and friend, Keith Charles Mohler, who passed away on July 29th from complications of lung cancer. Keith was as known for his trademark beret and all black garb at gigs as he was for his fine musical skills and wry sense of humor. He began playing the electric bass at the age of twelve and developed a lifetime passion for his instrument. He attended Berklee College of Music where he began to explore the expressive potential of the acoustic bass. After graduating from Berklee, Keith joined the Glenn Miller Orchestra, traveling the world as a professional musician. He later went on to work with various other touring companies including the Holiday on Ice shows.

Longing to pursue a more jazz oriented career, Keith returned to his hometown in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he was in demand as a freelance musician. He was a musician who did not wait for the phone to ring - always hustling to find new venues where jazz could be played. In the early 80’s he began booking the Sunday Night Jazz Series at the East of Eden Pub, which was a continued success for eight years. During this time, Keith and his trio mates, Steve Rudolph & John Peifer, performed with many notable jazz artists such as Valery Ponomarev, Al Grey, Sal Nestico, Steve Turre, Tim Warfield, Diane Shurr, Nat Adderly, John Blake, Cecil Bridgewater and Johnny Coles.

For the past twenty years, Keith has continued the campaign to keep jazz music alive, by creating new venues in the local scene, including the recent “Jazz in the Sky” series at the Fulton Opera House and Ware Center in Lancaster. He continued playing and recording with various groups including the Reese Project and the Ken Gehret Jazz Trio until his death.

While the jazz community knew Keith as a musician, he led another life as a veteran animal rights enforcement officer of the Humane League and he had joined the PA Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in April 2013 to provide law enforcement in Lancaster County.

The Philadelphia Enquirer had a large obituary hailing Keith as - “a towering figure in animal protection in Pennsylvania for a quarter century, Mohler spent most of his career as a humane society police officer investigating cases of animal abuse in the stockyards, puppy mills and farms of Lancaster County.” For 25 years he represented various organizations on behalf of animals in cruelty cases. Mohler was known for building meticulous cases that led to convictions and won him the respect of animal welfare advocates, district attorneys, local judges and the farming community.

"Keith exemplified the kind of officer we all aspire to be, balancing our compassion for the animals with our compassion for people,” said Nicole Wilson, Mohler’s supervisor at the PSPCA. “He helped animals across Pennsylvania but the animals and people of Lancaster County were closest to his heart. For Keith, this wasn't just a job it was part of him." Mohler made his mark decades ago taking action against horrific cruelty at the Lancaster Stockyards and infamous Hegins pigeon shoot. “He was a pioneer in using laws to protect farm animals in the modern era,” said Gene Baur, president of the Farm Sanctuary, who worked with Mohler to improve conditions in the Lancaster Stockyards in the 1980s. Baur said Farm Sanctuary incorporated in Pennsylvania and employed Mohler in order to focus on cruelty at the stockyards, at one time the largest stockyards east of the Mississppi River. It was Mohler’s pursuit of a case at the Lancaster Stockyards in 1992 that led to the first-ever conviction related to the abuse of farm animals in Pennsylvania – and likely anywhere, said Baur.

Keith is survived by his mother and by his longtime partner Laura Roberts, with whom he resided in Lancaster county.

The family asked that donations in Keith’s name may be made to: Farm Sanctuary, PO Box 150, Watkins Glen, New York 14891 or Pennsylvania SPCA, 350 East Erie Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19134 or Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz, 5721 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112. 10 John Blake, Jr. 1947 - 2014

John Blake Jr., the Philadelphia jazz violinist and music educator who toured with Grover Washington Jr. and McCoy Tyner and taught generations of students at the Settlement Music School and University of the Arts, died August 15th at age 67. It was a long road for Blake, who rose from the streets of Philadelphia to featured positions in several top jazz bands and on to his more recent role as a Grammy-nominated bandleader. By the late 1970s, he was backing saxophonist Washington in the studio and on the road, playing both keyboards and violin. He concentrated on the latter with pianist Tyner, who recorded two Blake compositions on his 1980 album, Horizon.

Starting with Maiden Dance in 1984, Blake recorded three albums as a leader in the 1980s. He was four times named DownBeat's Violinist Deserving Wider Recognition. He was nominated for a Grammy for Motherless Child, a 2010 gospel jazz collection featuring his jazz quartet and the Washington D.C. choir Afro Blue. That year, he was named a Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Fellow. In a 2011 profile in Strings magazine, violinist Christian Howes called Blake "the patriarch today of jazz violin." His students included Regina Carter, Jeremy Kittel of Turtle Island Quartet and Roots drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson.

John Blake as been a familiar figure in Central Pennsylvania from appearances at the East of Eden & Lucky Seven in the "good old days" to the CPFJ Picnic in 2012. He was named a Jazz Master by CPFJ that year. In 1996 he also performed a special “Jazz Violin Summit” concert at the Whitaker Center with German violinist Joerg Widmoser and legendary Kansas City violinist Claude “Fiddler” Williams.

“Through my music, I have been blessed and empowered to communicate because of the sacred ground I stand on to share my gift. Hopefully my listeners will be able to find something in the music that will lift them up and make them better in the moment and perhaps beyond." John Blake is surely standing on sacred ground today.

Blake is survived by his wife Barbara, son Johnathan, daughters Beverly Blake Woodson and Jennifer Blake Watson, sisters Vivian Carson and Charlotte Blake-Alston, and brothers Alan and Elliot Blake.

We can honor his spirit and keep his memory alive by listening to his music - below is a discography of John’s many recordings - seek them out and celebrate this great artist’s life. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

12 Track of the Month

Remember back when records came with liner notes that gave information about what you were hearing on the album? In this monthly column, the ViBE collides the new with the old by suggesting a tune to download from iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite music service, and providing “liner notes” from one of the CPFJ musicians or jazz enthusiasts. Enjoy!

Henry Butler and Steven Bernstein –“I Left My Baby” from the album Viper's Drag

New York City. It was an early January evening. We stood outside in bone-chilling cold awaiting entry to the Jazz Standard. Why? To see a true supergroup: the legendary Henry Butler, master of stride and New Orleans funk, backed by Steven Bernstein's Hot 9. It was well worth the wait: they tore the room apart with music that was at once accessible, yet full of melody, with sophisticated harmonies and spin-on-a-dime arrangements. Thankfully, the band jumped straight into the studio and the result is an equally wonderful album, of which "I Left My Baby" is a fine example. A straight blues, deeply traditional but set in a thoroughly modern context. This is not about solos; this about tight, tight, tight ensemble playing old school. This music is pretty much impossible NOT to like.
