• Post Paris climate commitments, Dr. Thomas Isaac, Finance Minister of wanted to initiate carbon neutral Wayanad and Meenangadi Grama Panchayath volunteered to do a pilot to be first Carbon Neutral Panchayath of the State.

• On 5 th June 2016, the project was formally launched

• Agrarian economy – 76% of the population depends on agriculture

• Home to crops that are thermo-sensitive and vulnerable to climate change such as Coffee, paddy & pepper. Areca nut banana are the other major crops .

• Commercial activity centred around National Highway & -Sulthan Bathery State Highway.
