Carbon Neutral Meenangadi Carbon Neutral Meenangadi Technical Cell Meenangadi Grama Panchayath, Wayanad Powered by Thanal www.thanal.co.in Genesis • Post Paris climate commitments, Dr. Thomas Isaac, Finance Minister of Kerala wanted to initiate carbon neutral Wayanad and Meenangadi Grama Panchayath volunteered to do a pilot to be first Carbon Neutral Panchayath of the State. • On 5 th June 2016, the project was formally launched Carbon Neutral Meenangadi Technical Cell Powered by Thanal Profile of Meenangadi • Situated in Sulthan Bathery block, Wayanad district of Kerala • 8199 house holds across 19 wards with a population of 34601 (as per Panchayat records) • Agrarian economy – 76% of the population depends on agriculture • Home to crops that are thermo-sensitive and vulnerable to climate change such as Coffee, paddy & pepper. Areca nut banana are the other major crops . • Commercial activity centred around Mysore National Highway & Mananthavady-Sulthan Bathery State Highway. Another speciality is that, this is the only temple in Wayanad which has Navagraha prathishta (idols). Mariyamman festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of medam. OF PEOPLE (Local / National / International) PARTICIPATED EVENTS/PROGRAMS DESCRIPTION (How festival is celebrated) Annual festival of this temple is celebrated in the Malayalam month of medam (April/May). There are a number of Cultural Activities traditional and cultural programmes associated with this Musical Concerts festival. Also annadanam is held on all days. On the final Traditional Arts day thalappoli takes place. Thalappoli is a unique ritual in Annadanam Kerala. In this ritual, women and young girls carry thalam in Thalappoli their hands which is filled with rice, flowers and a lighted Guruzi lamp and are accompanied by percussion music. This event is conducted to appease the deity and to bring prosperity to the entire community and the region.

The program has led to an overall transformation of a majority of institutions in their structure, facility upgrading, resource availability, manpowering, and decentralization of finance management. Empowering of existing health system and introducing and integrating newer programs of non- communicable disease control program, palliative care program, sickle cell disease control program, district mental health program have infused new vigour into the health services of the district and gives us pride to declare as successful widely accepted and fruitful health interventions carried out with ASHAs. Integration of HISP into statistical data collection and analysis, District planning using this data both for communicable, non-communicable diseases, planning for interventions in the field of maternal and child health, recognizing the vulnerable areas requiring additional inputs in the realm of tribal health have all been contributions of expertise provided in IDSP and HISP through NRHM.

LEMONGRASS OIL - A MAJOR SOURCE OF INCOME FOR THE TRIBALS OF WAYANAD DISTRICT KERALA Sangeeth Thekkan and S. Paulsamy* Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore-641 029 *E.mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT DOI:10.26524/krj14 Paniyas, Adiyas, Kattunaikan, Kuruman, Karimbalan and Kurchiyas are the native tribal communities and inhibiting the Wayanad district of Kerala. Most of the tribals have engaged in the collecting of minor forest produce and lemongrass cultivation. They have also involved as agriculture labours and casual labours for forest dept etc to meet their demand for basic livelihood. Cultivation of lemongrass for oil distillation is considered to be one of the major sources of income for them. The oil yield was determined on basis of grass biomass distilled and the quantity of oil extracted. Among the study areas, Pulpally registered higher annual biomass production of lemongrass (8380 kg/acre) followed by Ambalavayal (7800 kg/acre), Meppadi (7540 kg/acre) and Mananathavady (6440 kg/acre).
