Grammy Nominated Bluegrass Band to Come to Hughesville Grammy nominated bluegrass band to come to Hughesville Posted by TBN_Admin On 11/14/2014 Award winning Bluegrass band, The Boxcars, along with “2014 Mandolin Player of the Year”, Adam Steffey will be making a return performance to the American Legion Post 238 in Hughesville, MD on Sunday December 7, 2014. The show starts at 2:00 pm with special guest Davis Bradley Duo from the Shenandoah Valley area of Linden, VA. The doors open at Noon and tickets are “still”, the best entertainment bargain in town, just $15.00 per person. Just a short time ago, the name "The Boxcars" meant nothing. A few years later the name is synonymous with the five guys that make up this ground breaking band. They don't sound like anyone else. And yet they capture the excitement of the bands that preceded them in Bluegrass and combine it with cutting edge sounds of bluegrass today. The result is, well, magical. You can't replace chemistry between band members. And these guys have it. The Boxcars: Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, Keith Garrett, Harold Nixon and Gary Hultman make up what has quickly become one of the top headliners in bluegrass and beyond. With spending time with Alison Krauss & Union Station (Adam Steffey), J.D. Crowe & The New South (Ron Stewart, Harold Nixon), Blue Moon Rising (Keith Garrett and Harold Nixon), and The Dan Tyminski Band (Steffey and Stewart), this 5 piece band started out with an impressive rap sheet. Steffey's 2011 project on Sugar Hill, “One More For The Road” received a great deal of airplay and features guest appearances by Krauss, Ronnie Bowman and Tyminski. The Boxcars cover a broad range of material drawing heavily on the pen of Keith Garrett and Ron Stewart. They branch out into their own unique style of contemporary bluegrass laced with Steffey's signature rhythm that can be traced back to the early days of Union Station. Award winning instrumentalist Ron Stewart delivers rock solid banjo work, but also lays down the banjo for the fiddle on some tunes. It's always rare to have multiple strong vocalists in the same group, but The Boxcars benefit from strong vocal performances from Keith Garrett, Gary Hultman and Steffey's signature baritone. The American Legion Post 238 is located on the corner of Rt. 381 & Rt. 231 in Hughesville. The doors will open at noon. A Spaghetti dinner will be available for sale before the show by the Sons of the American Legion.     Ronald Dean Rice- Audiophile, Musician & Engineer Anyone who thought there were only three Rice Brothers is encouraged to study bluegrass history. Ron Rice grew up playing acoustic bass and performing with his three brothers, Larry, Tony and Wyatt. He’s the third youngest of the four and is now retired from a long career in power generation. While proud of the family’s musical heritage and impact, Rice is a highly talented, yet modest man who has created his own path. Currently living with his wife Terry in Falls Church, VA, his story is an important piece of bluegrass music history. Rice was born in Lynwood, California on February 22, 1955 to Herbert H. and Dorothy L. Rice, with his namesakes being Reagan and Martin. The Rice family resided in the suburbs of Los Angeles until the summer of ’65 then moved considerably along the east coast, as Dad Herb was in construction. Rice started playing the bass at age six with his brothers Larry playing mandolin, Tony playing guitar and Andy Evans playing banjo. This band was known as the Haphazards. Rice notes, “We played a lot of local bluegrass gigs around the Los Angeles area, amusement parks, auditoriums, coffee houses and pizza parlors. Other shows we played in the early sixties were more folk related, back in the Hootenanny days. I remember being back stage with and playing on the same bill as Peter, Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, and the Stoneman Family just to mention a few.” Rounder Records-The Rice Brothers 1 (1989) and The Rice Brothers 2 (1994) Rice recalls that the exact origin of the first Rice Brothers project remains something of a mystery.

    Volume 38, No. 7 © Central Texas Bluegrass Association July 2016 Sunday, July 3: Band Scramble and Garage Sale at Threadgill’s s in previous years, our annual band scramble and musical garage sale will take place at A Threadgill’s North location (6416 North Lamar, Austin) from 2-6 PM on Sunday. We test the boundaries of musical chaos while you watch. Here’s the schedule: 2:00 - 4:30: Buy new/used music-related items (instruments, CDs, DVDs, strings, books, etc.). 3:00: Up to six new, on-the-spot bands are formed from bluegrass/old-time pickers with stage experi- ence who sign up ahead of time. 4:00 - 6:00 Bands perform their tunes. Last year we had a total of 51 pickers in seven dif- ferent bands and raised over $2400. The garage sale portion of the event will be where the buffet is usu- ally set up. We’ll have CDs, T-shirts, magazines, instructional materials, maybe even some instru- ments for sale, and if you want to renew your mem- bership or join the CTBA for the first time, there’ll be some board members at the tables to help you. Last year we had some late arrivals who wanted to sign up even after some of the bands had started practicing. This year, it will help if everyone who wants to scramble can sign up by 3 PM so Eddie can get the bands properly sorted out. Mikaela, Derek, and Logan Pausewang, this year’s CTBA Jim Wiederhold participates in last year’s scholarship winners, will perform a few tunes for us band scramble.

Ballard Born and raised on Chestnut Mountain in Wilkes County, North Carolina, James “Jim” Shumate (1921-2013) was a pioneering bluegrass fiddler. His position at the inception of bluegrass places him as a significant yet understudied musician. Shumate was a stylistic co-creator of bluegrass fiddling, synthesizing a variety of existing styles into the developing genre during his time performing with some of the top names in bluegrass in the 1940s, including Bill Monroe in 1945 and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs in 1948. While the "big bang" of bluegrass is considered to be in 1946, many elements of the bluegrass fiddle style were present in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys prior to 1945. Jim Shumate’s innovative playing demonstrated characteristics of this emerging style, such as sliding double-stops (fingering notes on two strings at once) and syncopated, bluesy runs.
