Traditional Information and Antibacterial Activity of Four Bulbine Species (Wolf)

Accepted 7 December, 2010 Ethnobotanical survey of Bulbine Wolf, (Asphodelaceae) used for various treatment, such as, diarrhea, burns, rashes, blisters and insect bites, was carried out in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Information on the parts used and the methods of preparation was collected through questionnaire which was administered to the herbalists, traditional healers and rural dwellers which indicated the extensive use of Bulbine species. Most uses of Bulbine species closely resemble that of Aloe . Dried leaf bases and leaf sap are the commonest parts of the plants used. Preparations were in the form of decoctions and infusions. Bulbine frutescens was the most frequently and commonly used of the species collected for the treatment of diarrhoea, burns, rashes, blisters, insect bites, cracked lips and mouth ulcers. The leaf, root and rhizome extracts of B. frutescens, Bulbine natalensis, Bulbine latifolia and Bulbine narcissifolia were screened for antibacterial activities to verify their use by traditional healers. Bulbine abyssinica is a succulent member of the genus that occurs from the Eastern Cape, through Swaziland, Lesotho, and further north to Ethiopia. The species is often used in traditional medicine to treat rheumatism dysentery, bilharzia and diabetes. Inspite of its ethno medicinal value, not much data concerning the micro-morphological features is available in literature. The present study was undertaken to examine the ultra-morphological features of the leaf, stem and root of the plant using light and scanning electron microscopes and the elemental composition. The elemental compositions of the plant parts were done using energy dispersive x- ray spectroscopy. The mean length and width of the guard cells in the abaxial surface are 0.15 ± 0.002 mm and 0.14 ± 0.002 mm, respectively while those of the adaxial surface are 0.14 ± 0.001 mm and 0.12 ± 0.001 mm, respectively. The electron microscopy revealed the presence of crystals in the leaves, stems and roots. The EDXS microanalysis of the crystals revealed the presence of sodium, silicon, potassium and calcium as the major constituents. The leaf also showed the presence of iron and magnesium, while the stem had aluminium, phosphorous and magnesium. -

Schweickerdt Herbarium, Department of Plant Science, University of Pretoria, Pretoria, 0002, South Africa. 3Centre for Functional Ecology, Departamento de Ciências da Vida, Universidade de Coimbra, 3001-455 Coimbra, Portugal The genus Kumara Medikus (1786: 69) was recently reinstated in the Xanthorrhoeaceae: Asphodeloideae (alternatively Asphodelaceae: Alooideae) comprising only one species, namely the fan aloe, Kumara disticha Medikus (1786: 70) [with Aloe plicatilis (Linnaeus 1753: 321) Miller (1768: 7) given as a synonym] (Grace et al. 2013). However, if the fan aloe, currently known as Aloe plicatilis, is treated as a species of Kumara, the epithet plicatilis has priority and a new combination in Kumara is required. The new combination is made here. Kumara disticha Medik., used as correct name for the fan aloe by Grace et al. (2013), is in reality a superfluous name. According to the synonymy provided by Medikus (1786: 70), it has to be considered as a new combination based on Aloe disticha Linnaeus (1753: 321) [i.e. the correct author citation is Kumara disticha (L.) Medik.]. -
June 2019 Monthly Report
June 2019 Monthly Report The June monthly report makes for a lot of interesting reading with many activities taking place that kept the Rangers on their toes. The report provides the usual monthly compliance statistics including the discovery of snares, followed by a report back on the Voortrekkers annual visit, activities surround alien plant control and fuel load reduction, maintenance and some interesting wildlife highlights from the month. This report then details an alien biomass expo the Rangers attended, the very intriguing washout of a rare beaked whale and the Conservancy’s involvement therein, a conversation piece on Haworthia conservation and the release of a lesser Flamingo. The report is then concluded with the Capped Wheatear which features as this month’s monthly species profile. Plough snails enjoying their jellyfish feast. ‘If we knew how many species we’ve already eradicated, we might be more motivated to protect those that still survive. This is especially relevant to the large animals of the oceans.’ – Yuval Noah Harari 2 JUNE 2019 Compliance Management Marine Living Resources Act During June, a total of 24 recreational fishing, spearfishing and bait collecting permits were checked by Taylor, Kei and Daniel. Of the 24 permits checked, 6 people (25%) failed to produce a valid permit and were issued a verbal warning. Snares On the 3rd of June the Rangers came across some very rudimentary snares whilst checking some of the woodcutting operations on Fransmanshoek. Old packing strapping was used to create snares and were found tied to the base of bushes with a simple noose knot made at the other end. -

Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. U ovom članku sastavljeni su popisi stakleničkih mesnatica uzgajanih u Botaničkom vrtu zagrebačkog Prirodoslovno-matematičkog fakulteta između 1895. i 2017. Uređena je sinonimka i no- menklatura te istraženo podrijetlo biljnog materijala. Rezultati pokazuju kako je tijekom 122 godine kroz zbirku mesnatica hladnog staklenika prošlo najmanje 1423 svojti iz 254 rodova i 17 porodica.
