Citation: [Identification of Item], Michael Hardee Driscoll Papers, MC047, Harris County Archives, Houston, Texas.

Creator Sketch: Michael Hardee Driscoll, a consummate politician, was born on March 24, 1946, in Houston, Texas, to Victor Amadale and Inez Hardee Driscoll. When only two years old, his father died. The large and politically active Hardee family from Henderson County stepped in to help raise him and his brother Victor, influencing Driscoll’s life and career. His uncle, Ralph W. Yarborough, a courageous, liberal Democrat, introduced the boys to political campaigning early in their lives. In 1957 while senator, he invited Driscoll to Washington, D. C. for the summer. While there he encouraged the young boy to introduce himself to the various senators and ask for their photographs. Driscoll amassed a collection of seventy-eight signed photographs.

In 1963 he attended the Capitol Page School. Returning to Houston, he completed his education at Lamar High School, Houston Baptist University, and the University of Houston where he received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in 1968. In 1972 he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law School. In addition to his participation in campus affairs throughout his education, he was elected as Harris County Precinct Judge, Precinct 200 (1969 – 1973) and the Director of Protocol and Visitor Affairs at Johnson Space Center (1970 – 1972).

In 1973 Driscoll was appointed Justice of the Peace in the newly created Precinct 8-1. He later ran for election to the position and won. In 1978 he ran for County Judge losing to the Republican, Jon Lindsay. In 1980 Driscoll ran a campaign for County Attorney and won. He would serve in that office for sixteen years before leaving due to health issues related to Parkinson’s disease. During his tenure he was a leader in pursuing

Page 1 of 16 MICHAEL HARDEE DRISCOLL PAPERS – MC047 1928 – 2013 (Bulk: 1960 – 1996) environmental issues, shutting down drug houses and sexually oriented businesses, recouping money from the state for housing felons, and suing contractors who used defective materials on county jobs. He created a public integrity task force to deal with misconduct by government officers and employees. He successfully sued commissioners court for the County Attorney to maintain the right to oversee the distribution of bond funds. In 1994 the County Attorney’s Office investigated charges of bribery against County Judge Jon Lindsay, forcing his decision not to run for re-election. In 1992 Michael Driscoll announced publically that he had Parkinson’s disease. He went on to win re-election that year. With his health deteriorating, in December 1995 he announced that he would not run for a fifth term.

In April 1979 Michael Driscoll married Elizabeth (Betti) Rose McNamara of Waco. As a couple they were inseparable as both were interested in politics, campaigning, travel, and their families. In addition to his work as the county attorney, they traveled extensively. In 1982 a trip to their mutual ancestral home in Ireland helped to inform the Driscoll genealogy. On May 20, 1984, Betti Rose Driscoll died of cancer. Although bereft, he continued with his work, his campaigning, and his travels. In 1990 he married Dorothea Cangelosi. They were divorced in 1995.

Driscoll received many accolades and awards both during his career and after retirement. In 1996 he was awarded the first ever Gerald Summerford Civil Practitioner of the Year Award. In 2010 a courtroom was named for him in the County Attorney’s office and in 2011 a playground for special needs children.

Michael Driscoll died in Houston, Texas, on February 19, 2013.
