Shandon United Methodist Church Week of Sunday, April 4, 2021 Meet Us

Easter is the most important day of the year for Christians. It is our celebration of God’s vindication of Jesus by raising him from the dead. It is our celebration that through Jesus’ resurrection God’s new creation has begun, and we are called to live as new creation people. These are deep and profound theological concepts. But what about some practical ideas? How about some down-to-earth traditions that might help us celebrate more joyfully? Here are some ideas, especially geared toward children and families, from “Pockets” devotional magazine:

1. If you gave up something for , celebrate by enjoying what you gave up.

2. Have a picnic in the park with your family.

3. Make a cross out of something you’ve found in nature, and put it up in your room.

4. Make a special breakfast for your family or neighbors.

5. Make an Easter-themed table centerpiece: a rock, a cave made out of modeling clay, crosses, a crown of thorns, broken, and a .

6. To celebrate new life, make plans to plant a vegetable garden. This summer you can share what you grow with people in need.

7. Watch a movie about Jesus’ life and resurrection with your family or friends.

8. Join in the celebration at your church!

9. Visit someone who lives alone.

10. Enjoy a big dinner with your family and friends.

11. Decorate eggs and hand them out to residents of a nursing home.

12. Share the story of Jesus’ resurrection with a friend who doesn’t go to church.

13. Enjoy the outdoors with your family and friends. Whatever you decide to do, by all means remember that Easter is not just a single day. It’s a season of 50 days on the Christian calendar. Even more than that, it’s a lifestyle for every day of our lives.

Have a blessed Easter! Smoke

The Music Ministry at Shandon will offer special music for services. The Vocal Ensemble will be singing anthems for the Holy Thursday and services, April 1 and 2 at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, April 4, the Capital City Brass and Debbie Bauer, organist, will begin our worship with music 15 minutes prior to each service. There will be three anthems sung by the Vocal Ensemble, “This is the Day,” by John Rutter, “Litany for Easter,” by Gordon Young, and the “Hallelujah Chorus,” from Messiah by Handel, at the 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services.

An antiphonal division has been added and our organ console has been refurbished by Angerstein Organworks, LLC, of Hendersonville, North Carolina.

There are now seven ranks of pipes (each rank contains 61 pipes for a total of 427 pipes) installed in the balcony on each side of the Resurrection Window. Shandon member, Irene Tyson, designed the casework for the antiphonal and Stephen Spake of Lincoln Pipe Organs. Inc., Lincolnton, North Carolina, built the casework which holds the additional ranks. The antiphonal organ is playable from the console located in the choir loft. The antiphonal pipes provide additional sound from the organ to support and enhance congregational singing. Work was also done in re-wiring and replacing the electronic computer system, and controls, in the console. New digital stops were made and installed by the Walker Digital Organ Company in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.

The original organ was built by the M. P. Moller Company from Hagerstown, Maryland, in 1949-1950, and installed when our Sanctuary was built. Later additions were made in 1994 by the King of Instruments Company also from Hagerstown, Maryland. Currently the organ contains 3872 pipes which includes pipes in the chancel area and pipes in the antiphonal division.

On Sunday, April 18, we will consecrate and celebrate the organ with special music during the 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services. We are very grateful to Mrs. Patricia Beckler for making this organ project possible.

UMVIM and ERT Purchase Three New Trailers and Need Your Help to Equip Them As part of South Carolina United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM), Early Response Teams (ERT) have responded to countless disasters in South Carolina and throughout the Southeast since the ministry began in 2004. These teams come to the aid of individuals and families providing physical and emotional support and bringing hope after a devastating event has changed life as they knew it. Time and miles have left three of the current trailers unsafe for long distance travel and in desperate need of replacement. UMVIM and ERT have purchased three new heavy-duty trailers at a total cost of $48,000, but need your help to equip two of the trailers at a cost of $20,000 each.

Supplies per trailer include 5 chainsaws at $750 each, 5 pole saws at $700 each, 3 generators at $1,000 each, chainsaw related equipment, protective equipment, power blowers, various power tool sets, tool chests, ladders, tarp materials and associated supplies, shop vacs, specialized fans, dehumidifiers, first aid kits, and a wide variety of specialty tools and supplies.

Every dollar you give will go towards the purchase of equipment for these trailers. Please consider making a donation so we can continue to keep this vital outreach ministry ready to quickly and safely respond when disaster strikes South Carolina or our neighbors.

Donations may be made through the South Carolina United Methodist Conference website at umcsc.org, or mailed to either the United Methodist Conference Office, 4908 Colonial Drive, Columbia, 29203 or to Jennifer Parker, UMVIM Treasurer, 143 Glenbrooke Circle, Columbia, 29204. Please earmark your gift “ERT Equipment” on the memo line of your check. Thank you in advance for your prayers and financial support!
