NOVEMBER 20, 2020 $1.00 VOL. 11 NO. 47 FRIDAY PERFECT(11-0) Tea Area Titans 35 vs. (8-3) Canton C-Hawks 16 Titans cap off perfect season with State title

BY ANNE HOMAN The Tea Area Titans brought their “AA” game to the Class A Championship title game this past Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion. It was all Titans from the start as Tea Area defeated the C-Hawks 35-16 to win their second State A Football Cham- pionship title in school history. Playing fall sports during the COVID-19 Pandemic brought a whole new set of challenges for area football teams. Each week games hung in the balance but the Titans were able to play all regularly scheduled games during the 2020 season with the exception of their match- up against Pierre, which Pierre had to cancel due to COVID-19 numbers. Titan head coach Craig Clayberg is happy the season worked out and was thankful for all those who made it happen. “We want to thank our ad- ministration for all the hard work they did during the COVID Members of the Titan football team celebrate their State A Championship title. TEA WEEKLY | NOVEMBER 20, 2020 SPORTS • 9 Titans cap off perfect season with State title

STATE FOOTBALL | From 1 Clayberg, and the entire football team, was proud of the community support they felt all season and during the Championship game. “The football team would also like to thank the whole Tea community for the support at all games and especially in the dome,” said Clayberg. “Our fans were much louder than Canton’s fans and we for sure had the bigger crowd down in Vermillion during the Championship game.” Earning the Joe Robbie Most Valuable in the Champi- onship game was Titan senior, Austin Lake. Lake was also named outstanding back. Earning outstanding lineman in the game was senior Luke Rettedal. Other seniors on this year’s team included Conner Mulder, Braden Beach, Trevor Welch, Kaden Johnson, Garrett Kolbeck, Michael Wallin, Caden Ellingson, Ian Bennett, and Cayden Reiniger. “I can’t say enough about our seniors. The way that they led the team all season and through the playoffs was awesome. All 11 of them played a huge role in our success this season,” said Clayberg. “They have been working for this for four years and their dream came true. All the time they spent in the weight room, in other sports, at open fi elds, and doing extra workouts really paid off. Most of these guys are out for multiple sports and that really keeps them competing all year around. They are going to be missed next year, but we are looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish during the rest of their senior year.” Next season is bound to look a little different for the Titan football team. Not only will they lose 11 seniors but they will be competing in Class 11AA. But the Titans have proven, time and time again, they are up for the challenges thrown at them. “Moving up to Class 11AA will be a challenge, but our guys won’t back down. We will be the smallest school in the class, but I think we will be able to compete with anyone,” said Clayberg. “We need to have guys out for other sports or in the weight room the rest of this school year and in the summer to be prepared for the challenge.” STATE FOOTBALL | Page 10
