Starring Hitler! Adolf Hitler as the Main Character in Twentieth-First Century French Fiction Abstract Adolf Hitler has remained a prominent figure in popular culture, often portrayed as either the personification of evil or as an object of comedic ridicule. Although Hitler has never belonged solely to history books, testimonials, or documentaries, he has recently received a great deal of attention in French literary fiction. This article reviews three recent French novels by established authors: La part de l’autre (The Alternate Hypothesis) by Emmanuel Schmitt, Lui (Him) by Patrick Besson and La jeunesse mélancolique et très désabusée d’Adolf Hitler (Adolf Hitler’s Depressed and Very Disillusioned Youth) by Michel Folco; all of which belong to the Twenty-First Century French literary trend of focusing on Second World War perpetrators instead of their victims. -

A Clermont-Ferrand, cent quatre rues, monuments, lieux publics et stèles portent le nom de résistants (*) : des hommes célèbres comme Charles de Gaulle ou André Malraux, mais aussi de très jeunes gens comme André Clermontel, André Malpeyre, Jocelyn Giraudon et Serge Brousse, fauchés à seize ans et auxquels est dédié le square de la jeune Résistance. Observez-les bien, car elles écrivent une page d'histoire. Chapelier le jour et guerillero la nuit, Nestor Perret. Emile Couladon, légendaire colonel Gaspard. Figure emblématique de la Résistance sous le nom de Max et de Mercier, Jean Moulin a donné son nom à un boulevard et une école. Préfet de l’Aveyron, puis de l’Eure-et-Loire, il fut révoqué par le gouvernement de Vichy en juillet 1940, rejoignit le général De Gaulle à Londres, fut parachuté dans les Alpilles, unifia les trois principaux mouvements de résistance sous le sigle MUR et créa le Conseil national de la Résistance. Arrêté le 21 juin 1943, torturé par Barbie, il mourut le 8 juillet au cours de son transfert en Allemagne. La rue Emile Coulaudon rend hommage au légendaire colonel Gaspard. Ce Clermontois exprima très tôt son complet désaccord avec la politique de Pétain, prit la tête du premier Corps franc, devint le chef régional de l’Armée secrète, puis chef régional des FFI et, à la Libération, commandant de la 13e région militaire. -

Womack was a 1973 graduate of WSSU and a native of Winston-Salem, NC USA. She was a double music and education major and a member of the University Choir, under the direction of Permilla F. Dunston and Robert L. Morris. She became a classically trained Mezzo Soprano and certified Music Educator. Maestra Womack retired as a music teacher from the Washington, DC public schools a few years prior to her untimely death from complications of multiple sclerosis in 2014. Indeed, music was the string she used to thread her life’s purpose. Once fully endowed, this scholarship fund will provide tuition assistance, materials, supplies, and pre-professional development opportunities for incoming and existing music majors in choir and band, emphasizing music education, at WSSU and eventually beyond. Shaping and Reshaping WWII: French Cinema and the National Past Michelle Royer In his book The Vichy Syndrome: History and Memory in France since 1944, Henry Rousso looks at how France's way of talking about its past has changed in the last fifty years.1 The author identifies distinct discourses on the period of the Occupation, reflecting the political and social concerns of the era as much as the events of the Second World War. Throughout its history, French cinema has contributed to the shaping of the past through documentaries and fictional narratives and has provided a profound insight into the country's national identity. In this article, I will show that the filmic representations of World War II and more specifically of the period of the Occupation have been essential elements in the construction and reconstruction of collective memory, and at times in its repression, and that they also bear witness to the times in which the films were made. I will focus on two French films representative of two distinct periods and two different discourses on the French Occupation: Rene Clement's Jeux Interdits (1952) and Louis Malle's Lacombe Lucien (1975), and will show how these films have contributed, through fictional narratives, to the shaping of France's past and identity. Some films have been very controversial, and it is important to understand why. Is emotion itself, though often very intense, not ambivalent? The men in the new regime immediately began to make social and political changes which, in their mind, were long overdue. They believed that they could negotiate with the occupation officials in the North and maintain France‟s sovereignty, at least in the “free” Southern zone. They also believed, as did a large part of the French people, that the inadequacies of the republican system had lost France the war.
