SEASON RECAPS

Monday, October 24: Montreal 3, Flyers 1 at Bell Centre – Brendan Gallagher deflected home a power play goal with 6:52 left in the third period to lift Montreal to an eventual 3-1 win over the Flyers. After a scoreless first period, Shea Weber put the Canadiens on the board first when his slapshot broke Brayden Schenn’s stick in two and then slid past Steve Mason 5:28 into the second frame. The Flyers answered a little over six minutes later on Jake Voracek’s deflection of a Claude Giroux slapshot from the point, which tied things at 1-1 through the second intermission. The game-winner came four seconds into Montreal’s fourth power play when Alex Radulov took a slapshot from the right point that Gallagher deflected over Mason’s shoulder. Radulov then ended things with a late empty-netter. Mason was excellent in defeat, stopping 30 of 32 shots he faced, while Carey Price had several outstanding saves among his 31. Stars of the Game: 1 – Alexander Radulov; 2 – Shea Weber; 3 – Carey Price.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT (all stats as of the end of Thursday night’s games)

Claude Giroux entered Friday night’s NHL action as part of a pack of five players with 13 points on the season, one behind Artem Anisimov for the league lead. Giroux has two goals and 11 assists, all of which came as part of a career-high 10 game scoring streak, which came to an end when he went without a point in Thursday’s win at NYI – although he did score the winning shootout goal. That game and the first game of the season in Los Angeles are the only two games this year in which Giroux has not had a point. His 11 assists continue to lead the league, and his seven power play points were tied for the league lead. He was also second in the NHL in faceoffs taken at 264.

Wayne Simmonds had a five-game scoring streak come to an end on Thursday. He remains in possession of 12 points on the year (6G, 6A) and is one of three players atop the league with four power play goals. He has at least a point in nine of the Flyers’ 12 games this season, and has three two-point games in the last eight contests.

Jake Voracek is part of a pack of players tied with 11 points, three off the league lead. He’s posted eight of his 11 points at even strength. Voracek is second in the league in shots on goal with 50. He’s posted 40 of those 50 shots in the last eight games.

Matt Read has six goals through the first 12 games. He had 11 goals in 79 games last season, and eight in 80 games two years ago.

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, there have been 17 goals scored by teams skating with an extra attacker, and the Flyers have accounted for four of those. They have tied the game three times in the final two minutes of a period already this season, including the last two games in a row. The Flyers only tied games in the final two minutes on three occasions the entirety of last season.

Also per Elias, the two tying goals scored the last two nights – with 1:04 remaining on Wednesday and under 58 seconds left on Thursday – mark just the second time in franchise history the Flyers have tied the score with less than two minutes remaining in two consecutive games. The other was on Jan. 18–20, 1979, in games against BOS and MTL, with the tying goals scored by Mel Bridgman and Bob Dailey.

The Flyers lead the league in shots on goal with 393 and are second in shots per game with 32.8. They also lead the league in missed shots at 185. The Flyers are the only team with three players (Voracek, Simmonds, Gostisbehere) in the league’s top 25 in shots on goal; only two other teams (SJS & WPG) have two players in that group.

The Flyers are third in the league with 3.42 goals scored per game but are 29th in goals against per game at 3.58. The Flyers and their opponent have combined for four or more goals in all 12 of the team’s games so far this season, six or more in nine of the 12 games, and nine or more in four of them.

Most of those goals the Flyers have scored have come in the second period of games. The Flyers lead the league in second period goals (21) and are fourth in third-period goals (15). They have four first-period goals, which is tied for third-fewest in the league.

The Flyers have the league’s fourth-best power play at 26.1 percent (12-for-46) and have at least one PPG in eight of their last 10 games.

The Flyers are tied for fourth in the league in hits with 281 and are tied for fifth in blocks with 178.

Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), comes to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span. North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12). 46 of Hakstol’s players at UND played professionally in 2014-15 and 20 played in the NHL, including Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks and Matt Greene of the Los Angeles Kings. UND produced a total of 42 NHL draft picks during Hakstol’s tenure, including eight first-round picks.
