Our Family: in memory of Papa Mama and Grandparents

October 1, 2009 Papa, Mama and Family

Growing up in two adjacent villages of southern Taiwan divided by a stream, Papa and Mama were married through a traditional Chinese matchmaker in 1940. The union of Papa, a man of excellent build, and Mama, a woman of great intelligence, was unique in many ways, particularly for a poor family in the farming village. Papa was born and raised for farm work only, but Mama was quick with numbers and wanted to do more than farming for the family. It was with this contrast that we grew up with the other three families of uncles, two older and one younger than Papa, living next to each other and sharing a typical Chinese court yard.

Mama believed that she should and would have eight children and was determined to raise the eight children. was born when Papa was twenty-one years old and Mama, nineteen; Mu-Lin, the youngest in the family, arrived seventeen years later.

Naturally as a big family, we would have more helping hands for farm work. However, as Taiwan returned to China from Japanese occupation, Mama realized the value of education and believed that the family should take advantage of the mandatory schooling campaign to keep their children in school as long as they could. Of course, this would inevitably add financial stress to the family, but she was extremely determined with her belief. Indeed, I was literally forced to stay in the elementary school for the first two years before I discovered the joy and merits of schooling over farming.

One by one, we have grown up and formed our own families either following Papa and Mama’s wishes or our own ways. As the eldest child in the family, Big Brother set an early example for the rest of us by passing the exam for teacher’s college that provided free tuition and a job guarantee for teaching. My happiest memory and proudest time in my schooling was to have the privilege of helping Mama read and interpret the letters when she received Big Brother’s certified mail containing checks of his monthly earnings.

Papa and Mama together lived to see Big Brother, Second Brother, Big Sister, and Second Sister form their respective families. Then, Papa left us suddenly on November 30, 1977 while Mama was totally unprepared for his departure; she wept often for the rest of her life, even when she was happy. Mama was obviously happy but wept when she heard the news that I earned a scholarship from Purdue University for pursuing a PhD in 1978; I left for America in July.

Mama was apparently pleased to head YuFun’s wedding in 1980. When I received my PhD and returned home from America in January 1982, she was happy and proud to see me; the first thing we did for the reunion was to pay respect to Papa with incense. I spent three days with her, visited temples and listened to her stories of the past four years; we had a wonderful time. Then, she wanted me to touch a hard spot in her back where the kidney was located. Without much medical knowledge, I consulted with YuFun for an urgent exam; it turned out to be a fatal kidney stone that took her life eventually. Mama bid farewell to us on July 18, 1982.

The sprits of Papa and Mama have held all of us together as a family consisting of the eight families of their children. We are determined and continue to live up to Papa and Mama’s wish. Life goes on; it is a book with no conclusion, but a circle.
