QIPCO GUINEAS FESTIVAL Newmarket 2000 GUINEAS WRAP UP

Stamina Tests Unlikely for Frankel... Henry Cecil cast major doubt on the possibility of stretching out Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) for a tilt at the 10-furlong G2 Dante S. at York May 12 and G1 over a mile and a half June 4. Following the dramatic six-length success of Khalid Abdullah=s unbeaten colt in Saturday=s G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, a possible run in the Dante was touted, but that was all but ruled out by his trainer yesterday. AObviously, the Prince will make a decision, and we can tell him what we feel, but the Dante comes up very quick, and to run in a Derby would slightly be guessing,@ Cecil explained. AIt is far more probable, but not definite, that he could go to Royal Ascot for the [June 14] G1 St James=s Palace S., and take on the older horses over a mile later in the year. There is the G1 Sussex S. [Goodwood July 27] and G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. [Ascot Oct. 15], and we=ll put him in the mile-and-a-quarter races like the G1 Juddmonte International [York Aug. 17], as I think he will get that trip now he=s settling. It=s all up in the air, but if I don=t feel the Derby is right for him, he mustn=t go for it. You are going into completely unknown territory, and with the speed he has got, he=d have to be an extraordinary horse to do it. I feel we=d be much better to feel our way and not abuse him. G1 QE II Cup Cont. The much-improved Ambitious Dragon, from handicap performer to hero of the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby earlier in the season, once again put his powerful late kick to use when annexing the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup. Kept in the handicap ranks for the beginning of the season, which began in October, Ambitious Dragon doubled up wins during the opening opening weeks and again in January before being asked to step it up in the Mercedes-Benz HK Classic Cup Feb. 20. He duly came through for owner Johnson Lam Pui Hung and trainer Tony Millard, winning at 10-1 Ambitious Dragon Horsephotos odds, before proving that was no fluke with a popular late-running tally in the Hong Kong Derby Mar. 20. Once again the choice breaking from stall seven, the New Zealand-bred 4-year-old was away a bit slowly, but was sharply angled to the rail and was already in a mid-pack position by the time the made they first right-hand turn. On the front end, Packing Winner (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) took them along at a modest clip, in advance of a well-placed Mighty High. Maneuvered to the outside turning the corner, Ambitious Dragon still had eight rivals ahead of him 400 meters out, but as the track announcer called out, >Here comes The Dragon,= the gelding chased down a game Mighty High while outfinishing California Memory. AIt all went sweetly,@ said jockey Douglas Whyte. AThe only aggro was getting his head down in the gates, and he almost lost the race by doing it, but after coming out slowly, he did everything right. When I called on him, he had it won in the matter of about three strides.@ Matthew Chadwick, on runner-up California Memory, added, AIt was a great run. I was just a couple of lengths too far back when they started the run to line, and that was the difference between winning and losing.@ Two-time QEII winner Viva Pataca (GB) (Marju {Ire}) was in the mix 200 meters out and ran a fine race to be fifth. AHe loomed up to win, but couldn't quite finish it off,@ said jockey Darren Beadman. AHe's probably just operating on one cylinder less these days, but he's a tough old boy." American Grade I winner Gitano Hernando (GB) (Hernando {Fr}), making his first start since running sixth in the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 26, never factored and finished eighth. Close Last Year, LaPenta Aims for Redemption... It wouldn't be a surprise if Robert LaPenta arrived at Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby clutching every amulet, horse shoe and rabbit's foot he could find. Luck, after all, was hard to come by for the Connecticut-based owner a year ago, when his Ice Box (Pulpit) endured a brutal trip in the Rose for the Roses--the official comment line reads "steadied, blocked, steadied"--that left the GI Florida Derby winner a tough-beat second. Most would say LaPenta enters the Derby with his best chance yet in Dialed In, who won the GIII Holy Bull S. in January, lost his unbeaten record to older stablemate Equestrio (Elusive Quality) in a second-level allowance race at Gulfstream in March, then chased down fellow Derby hopeful Shackleford (Forestry) in the GI Florida Derby. The last victory, in concert with a loss by Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie), put Dialed In as Dialed In the early favorite for the Horsephotos Derby, and LaPenta admits to feeling some of the strain that carries with it. "With our belief in this horse, I think it's been a little more stressful," he said of the run-up to the Derby. "We've been counting down now what seems like a lot longer than 30 or 60 days or whatever. It's been a stressful road to the Triple Crown, but I'm glad we're getting close. It's been such a crazy road this year with all of the upsets. Plus we're going in thinking we have a horse that is very, very special.
