Bill Oppenheim, February 20, 2002 – Value Stallions

Pioneering (Mr. Prospector--Terlingua, by Secretariat) FROM THE DESK OF... Allowance-winning half brother to Storm Cat had California Grade II winner Give Praise in 2000, this Bill Oppenheim year's GIII Golden Gate Derby winner Danthebluegrassman in second crop. One GSW per STALLION SURVEY 101 crop (both California SW at two) makes that $5,000 Over the next few days, we’ll be concluding our fee this year look pretty good. survey of North American and European stallions who look good value to me, based on the numbers, here is Service Stripe (Deputy Minister--Wedding Picture, by Blushing Groom) a list of 39 more stallions I particularly like. I must Pope McLean (Storm Boot, Dixieland Heat) does it emphasize there are hundreds of stallions with again--he's an overnight sensation after 40 years in something to recommend them, and the inclusion of the horse business. Very good article about him by a horse on this list doesn't mean I don't like others Dan Liebman in the 2-9 Blood-Horse. But back to too. So apologies if you thought your horse should Service Stripe, a son of Deputy Minister who was a be included--write in and tell me at [email protected]. SW at Remington and Detroit. He had four A Only a third of the horses in today's list actually Runners/SW in 2001 including GI Spinaway winner qualified for APEX ratings (meaning they had 10+ Cashier's Dream, from 28 foals in two crops. He 3yos of 2001), so I know I'm really into Subjective might be the best stallion at that farm. Country with the others. There's something I especially like about them, that's all I can say. You (Continued) may completely disagree, and, if I have no numbers to support my argument, your educated guess is as good as mine. But here's my final list (I promise), KENTUCKY’S YOUNGER STALLIONS Stallion (Sire) Farm (Fee) anyway. Nothing of note yet from next two crops.

Today’s got scopey-looking first-crop yearlings in 2000. So 13 second part is highlighted by several stallions residing in winners (five SP), 13th on 2001 Freshman Sire list the Sunshine State followed by a review of sires looks a good start. Another who drops to a bargain standing elsewhere in the U.S. European-based stallions $5,000 at Overbrook. will be featured in tomorrow’s TDN.

Geri, 1992 (F1999) Miner's Mark (Theatrical--Garimpeiro, by Mr. Prospector) (Mr. Prospector--Personal Ensign, by Private Account) A GI Oaklawn H. winner on dirt and second to Standing at Dunhill Farm, Florida, for $7,500 Spinning World in 1997 Breeders' Cup Mile on turf By Mr. Prospector out of Personal Ensign, and this reads like good credentials. Repatriation from Japan horse always seemed more like his dam’s sire, Private looked dodgy when he didn't finish in the top 75 on the Account, than like Mr. Prospector. His Grade I win at Freshman Sire list, but opening weekend Oaklawn Park three came in the 10-furlong GI . Dixie Belles winner Bedanken cheered us all up. Too They bounced him out of Lane's End (but apparently good a horse not be worth this kind of money. didn't sell him), and he promptly showed signs of improvement. It's no great shakes--he's better for B and Tejano Run, 92 (F1999) C Runners than for A's, and his two-year-old rating is (Tejano--Royal Run, by Wavering Monarch) low. But he did have five five-year-olds from his first Quick--name the second to Thunder Gulch in the crop earn $50,000+ last year, which means they're 1995 . Yep, this is the boy. Tenth on looking sound, and aren't devoid of class. He'd be a the 2001 Freshman sire list, with seven winners, two good horse to breed some of those speedball Florida SW including Clarendon S. (Woodbine) winner Shaws mares to. Creek. Hunting Hard Romanov (Ire), 94 (F2000) (Seeking the Gold--Oh What a Dance, by Nijinsky II) (Nureyev--Morning Devotion, by Affirmed) Standing at Bridlewood Farm, Florida, for $3,000 Though he won over seven furlongs and a mile, and This horse has made a good start, and I know every ran third (to Desert King) in the 1997 Irish 2000 time I say something nice about him, Bob Cromartie Guineas, Romanov was rapidly stepped up in trip, and and Alan Briggs, who bought him, shake their heads subsequently ran third to Benny the Dip in the 1997 and chuckle. A stakes-placed son of a filly sire, I said, , third to Chief Bearheart later that year in ‘no chance.’ “Very good-looking horse,” said Bob, “had the Canadian International, and came back at four to ability. You watch.” See, I do admit when I've win the G2 Jockey Club S. at Newmarket, all at 1 'underestimated' one. This horse has sired four earners 1/2-miles. He's a very good-looking son of Nureyev and of $80,000+ (B Runners at least), which is plenty good half brother to Balanchine, but his foal crops are all in going for a $3,000 sire. They're good at two, too. the twenties. Everything is against him commercially, as he enters the fray with 24 two-year-olds to Younger Florida Stallions: represent him. He might make a sire, though. Concerto, 1994 (F2000) (Chief’s Crown--Undeniably, by In Reality) K One King, 96 (F2002) Standing at Ocala Stud Farm, Florida, for $3,500 (Apalachee--Tis Michelle, by Native Charger) Yup, a son of Apalachee, and maybe the last Grade 1 This was a very good horse by Chief's Crown. He winner to go to stud from the line. I know won two stakes, including Churchill Downs' GIII it was a long time ago and Round Table is only a Kentucky Jockey Club at two, and was the leading distant memory, but it was very, very good, and so Maryland-based contender for the 1997 Classics. He was Apalachee. This fellow ran a 115 the day he beat won the GII Jim Beam, two other Grade IIIs and $874,000 that year, and finished up with nine stakes Almutawakel and Cat Thief to win the GI Oaklawn H. in wins and career earnings of $1.3 million. There's a lot 2000, which I reckon equates to at least a Timeform of speed in his family, too. 127+. That's good enough. Delaware Township, 1996 (F2003) (Notebook--Sunny Mimosa, by Sunny North) Standing at Cardiff Stud Farm, California, for $7,500 Standing at Padua Stables, Florida, for $6,500 Here's a horse who has dropped to $7,500 and looks screaming good value at that price. Who knows why an A couple of weeks ago I was writing about Notebook allowance-winning son of Never Tabled is a good sire. I and Montbrook, the two Ocala Stud Florida sire certainly don't. But a good sire he is. His first crop of sensations. Both of them, along with former Florida sire 10 foals included Free House ($3.1 million) and Bagshot sensation Saint Ballado, have very promising sons going ($729,000), and his 1998 and '99 crops (three-year- to stud in Florida this year. Notebook’s is Delaware olds and two-year-olds of 2001) had 120 foals between Township, who closed out his career with a Grade I win them. So did they flop? It looks the opposite to me. He in the seven-furlong Forego (109 Beyer, over Left had six ABC three-year-olds last year, and a $111,000- Bank); a Grade II win in the six-furlong Forest Hills earning two-year-old SW. His APEX ratings remain (115); an under-3L sixth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, in sky-high. which, by the way, nothing from off the pace ever got into the race (112); and a three-length Grade I win in Devil Begone (Devil’s Bag--Endear, by Alydar) the six-furlong DeFrancis Memorial (116, Xtra Heat Standing at Running Horse Farm, LLC, NM, for $2,000 third). Very good horse. Good enough to make a sire. A half brother to Lure by Devil's Bag, this horse only had 45 foals in his first four crops, which I believe were Flame Thrower, 1998 (F2003) all sired in Ontario. But he had the very good Canadian (Saint Ballado--Metromane, by Metrogrand) three-year-old, I and I in 2000, and the $233,000- Standing at Stoneriggs Farm, Florida, for $6,500 earning SW Devil's Valentine last year. Of course, two good horses like that can result in a 4.00 A Index and a Flame Thrower won his first four starts at two, 4.20 two-year-old index, but it's pretty good going including three California graded races from 6 1/2f-1m. considering the opportunity he's had, nonetheless. He never won again. He patently didn't go two turns in the 2000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile won by Macho Uno over Point Given, then only ran twice at three, last YOUNGER U.S. STALLIONS year. But he ran a bang-up second to Put It Back in the Stallion (Sire) Farm (Fee) Florida GII Riva Ridge on Belmont Day. This was a very good Concerto (Chief’s Crown) Ocala Stud ($3,500) two-year-old and sprinter, totally lacking in family, it is Delaware Township (Notebook) Padua ($6,500) true, though there are some good sprinting elements in Flame Thrower (Saint Ballado) Stoneriggs ($6,500) it. He's by Saint Ballado, though, and he was fast. Snuck In (Montbrook) Cloverleaf ($2,500) Elsewhere in N.A. Snuck In, 1997, (F2003) Jet (Unbridled) Country Life (Md) ($7,500) (Montbrook--Love Child, by Mugassas) City Zip (Carson City) Contemporary (NY) ($7,500) Standing at Cloverleaf Farm II, Florida, for $2,500 Poteen (Irish River) Old English Rancho (Ca) ($2,500) Last year Montbrook's best three-year-old was Outofthebox, but it's easy to forget that Snuck In was Montbrook's first good three-year-old, the year before. A triple SW in Florida and Kentucy at two, he was also Younger Stallions: one of the horses that put trainer Steven Asmussen firmly on the map--and it didn't hurt that brother Cash Unbridled Jet, 1996 (F2002) commuted from France to ride him in every one of his (Unbridled--Easy Summer, by Easy Goer) three-year-old races. He won the GIII Rebel, ran second Standing at Country Life Farm, Maryland, for $7,500 to Graeme Hall in the GII Arkansas Derby, and fifth to Red Bullet and Fusaichi Pegasus in the Preakness. This was a very good horse, trained by Bill Mott, and That's good form for this kind of money and I believe I thought he was a shrewd buy by the Pons boys for he looks the part, too. Maryland. It's absolutely true, he never won a stakes. It’s also true that he was an unlucky fourth in the GI Turkoman Haskell (Menifee, Cat Thief and Forestry ahead of him, (Alydar--Taba {Arg}, by Table Play) though beaten only 1 1/2 lengths), and he came out Standing at Circle H Ranch, California, for $3,500 and won a Gulfstream allowance by 12 in his only start It's been a long time between drinks of water for at four. He had the ability, he's by Unbridled, and he's poor old Turkoman--out of fashion and shipped to out of an Easy Goer mare. He has plenty going for him. California. His last SW was foaled in 1996, but, lest we forget, this was a top-class son of Alydar, and he is City Zip, 1998 (F2003) already the dam sire of 12 'A Runners,’ including Point (Carson City--Baby Zip, by Relaunch) Given. He'd be a good horse to breed a mare to that Standing at Contemporary Stallions, NY, for $7,500 you wanted a daughter of. I thought this horse was a good buy for New York. Smokester He was a very tough, high-quality sprinter, even as a (Never Tabled--Small World, by ) two-year-old in 2000, when he won (including a dead-heat with Yonaguska in the GI Hopeful) four graded two-year-old races in New York. How many horses do that? He's by Carson City, a very good sprint sire son of Mr. Prospector, and he started 11 times at two, and 12 times at three. He won eight stakes races, and placed in eight more, in 23 career starts.

Poteen, 1994 (F2003) (Irish River--Chaleur, by Rouge Sang) Standing at Old English Rancho, CA, for $2,500 Rated 118 by Timeform at three and four (way back in 1997-98), he placed in Group 1 races in Britain at two, three, and four, namely, the Racing Post Trophy (second to Medaaly), the English 2000 Guineas (third to Entrepreneur), and the Lockinge S. (second to Cape Cross); he was also (a distant) third to Intikhab in the G2 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot and third to Labeeb and Jim and Tonic in the then-ungraded Woodbine Mile. He only ever won one career stakes (at Del Mar), but he's now resurfaced for $2,500 at Old English Rancho. It's a lot of form for that kind of money.
