Buddha Vandana Paying Respect to the Buddha itipi so Indeed, bhagavā the Blessed One arahaṃ is worthy and sammāsambuddho rightly self-awakened, vijjācaraṇasampanno perfect in knowledge & conduct, sugato well-gone, lokavidū knower of worlds, anuttaro purisadammasārathi unexcelled as a trainer for those people fit to be tamed, satthā devamanussānaṃ Teacher of devas & humans, buddho he is Awake and bhagavā'ti. Blessed.

Dhamma Vandana Paying Respect to his Teaching svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo The Dhamma is well-explained by the Blessed One, sandiṭṭhiko to be seen here & now, akāliko timeless, ehipassiko inviting investigation, opanayiko leading onwards, paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhī'ti to be realized by the wise for themselves.

Sangha Vandana Paying Respect to the Community supaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples ujupaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, who have practiced well ñāyapaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho, who have practiced straightforwardly sāmīcipaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho who have practiced methodically yadidaṃ cattāri who have practiced masterfully purisayugāni in other words, the four types aṭṭhapurisapuggalā. when taken as pairs, Esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho the eight when taken as individual types āhuneyyo they are the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples: pāhuṇeyyo worthy of gifts, dakkhiṇeyyo worthy of hospitality, añjalikaraṇīyo worthy of offerings, anuttaraṃ puññakkhettaṃ lokassā'ti. worthy of respect, the incomparable field of merit for the world.

Tiratana The Three Refuges Buddhaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi I go to the Buddha for . Dhammaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi I go to the Dhamma for refuge. Sanghaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi I go to the Sangha for refuge.

Dutiyampi Buddhaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi For a second time, I go to the Buddha for refuge. Dutiyampi Dhammaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi For a second time, I go to the Dhamma for refuge. Dutiyampi Sanghaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi For a second time, I go to the Sangha for refuge.

Tatiyampi Buddhaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi For a third time, I go to the Buddha for refuge. Tatiyampi Dhammaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi For a third time, I go to the Dhamma for refuge. Tatiyampi Sanghaṃ saranaṃ gacchāmi For a third time, I go to the Sangha for refuge.

Pancasila The Five Trainings

1. Pāṇātipātā 1. I undertake the training to refrain from veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ sāmādìyāmi harming living beings. 2. Adinnādānā 2. I undertake the training to refrain from veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ sāmādìyāmi taking that which is not given. 3. Kāmesu micchacara 3. I undertake the training to refrain from veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ sāmādìyāmi sexual misconduct. 4. Musāvādā 4. I undertake the training to refrain from veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ sāmādìyāmi harsh or false speech. 5. Surāmeraya-majja-pamādaṭṭhānā 5. I undertake the training to refrain from veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ sāmādìyāmi intoxicating drinks and drugs which cloud the mind and lead to carelessness.

Silena sugatim yanti With virtue, true happiness is gained; Silena bhoga sampada With virtue, real wealth is achieved; Silena Nibbutim yanti With virtue, Nibbana is attained. Tasma silaṃ visodhaye Therefore let your virtue be purified.

Kayena vaca cittena If, by body, speech, or mind, pamadena maya kataṃ due to carelessness, I have done some wrong Accayaṃ khama me dhamma pardon me that offence, O Dhamma, Sanditthika akalika visible and immediately effective.

Kayena vaca cittena If, by body, speech, or mind, pamadena maya kataṃ due to carelessness, I have done some wrong Accayaṃ khama me sangha pardon me that offence, O Sangha, supatipanna anuttara practicing well and supreme.

Puja Offering Ghana sārappa dittena With this lamp that dispels all darkness, dīpena tama damsinā I honour the Perfectly Enlightened One tiloka dīpaṃ sambuddhaṃ who is a lamp unto the three worlds pūjayāmi tamo nudaṃ. and is the dispeller of darkness.

Vaņņagandhaguņopetaṃ This mass of flowers etaṃ kusumasantatiṃ endowed with colour, pūjayāmi munindassa fragrance, and quality sirīpadāsaroruhe. I offer at the lotus-like feet of the King of Sages.

Pūjemi Buddhaṃ kusumena 'nena I honour the Buddha with these flowers: puññena etena ca hotu mokkhaṃ by the merit of this may I attain freedom. Pupphaṃ milāyāti yathā idaṃ me Even as these flowers do fade, kāyo tathā yāti vināsabhāvaṃ. so does my body come to ruin.

Adhivāsetu no bhante Reverend teacher, please consent bhojanaṃ parikappitaṃ To accept with favour Anukampam upādayā this food which has been carefully prepared. patiganhātu muttama. out of compassion for us.

Metta Loving Kindness

Caturappamaññā Obhāsana The Four Boundless Qualities Mettā-sahagatena cetasā I will abide pervading one quarter ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati with a mind filled with loving-kindness, Tathā dutiyaṃ tathā tatiyaṃ tathā catutthaṃ Likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the Iti uddham adho tiriyaṃ sabbadhi sabbattatāya fourth, So above and below, around and everywhere, Sabbāvantaṃ lokaṃ and to all as to myself. mettā-sahagatena cetasā I will abide pervading the all-encompassing world with Vipulena mahaggatena a mind filled with loving-kindness: appamāṇena averena abyāpajjhena Abundant, exalted, immeasurable, pharitvā viharati without hostility, and without ill-will.

Karaniya Metta Sutta Chant of Loving-Kindness Karanīyam-attha-kusalēna This is what should be done yantam santam padam abhisamecca, By one who is skilled in goodness Sakko ujū ca sūjū ca And who knows the path of peace: suvaco cassa mudu anati māni. Let them be able and upright, Straightforward and gentle in speech, Santussako ca subharo ca Humble and not conceited, appakicco ca salla-huka vutti, Santindriyo ca nipako ca Contented and easily satisfied, appagabbho kulēsu ananugiddho. Not busy with duties and frugal in their ways.

Na ca khuddam samācarē kinci Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful, yēna viññu parē upavadeyyum Not proud and demanding in nature. Sukhino vā khemino hontu Let them not do the slightest thing Sabbē sattā bhavantu sukhitattā. That the wise would later reprove, Wishing: In gladness and in safety, Yēkēci pāna bhūtatthi May all beings be happy. tasā vā thāvarā vā anava, sēsā, Dīghā vā yē mahantā vā - Whatever living beings there may be, majjhimā rassakā nuka thūlā. Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none, The great or the mighty, Ditthā vā yēva additthā medium, short, or small, yēca dūrē vasanti avidūrē, The seen and the unseen, Bhūta vā sambhavēsi vā Those living near and far away, sabbē sattā bhavantu sukhitattā. Those born and to be born, May all beings be happy. Na paro param nikubbētha nāti maññētha katthaci nam kanci, Let none deceive another Byārosanā patigha saññā Or despise any being in any state. nāñña maññassa dukkha miccheyya. Let none through anger or ill-will Wish harm upon another. Mātā yathā niyam puttam Even as a mother protects with her life āyusā ēka putta manu rakkhe, Her child, her only child, Ēvampi sabba bhūtēsu So with a boundless heart mānasam bhāvayē aparimānam. Should one cherish all living beings,

Mettam ca sabba lokasmin Radiating kindness over the entire world: mānasam bhāvayē aparimānam, Spreading upwards to the skies Uddham adho ca tiriyam ca And downwards to the depths, asambādham avēram asapattam. Outwards and unbounded,

Tittham caram nisinno vā Freed from hatred and ill-will. sayāno vā yāva tassa vigata middho, Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down, Ētam satim adhittheyya Free from drowsiness, brahmam ētam vihāram idhamāhu. One should sustain this recollection. This is said to be the sublime abiding. Ditthin ca anupa gamma sīlavā By not holding to fixed views, dassanēna sampanno, The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision, Kāmēsu vineyya gēdham Being freed from all sense-desires, nahi jātu gabbhaseyyam punarētiti. Is not born again into this world.

Khandha-paritta Protection of Groups with Love Virūpakkhehi me mettaṃ I have love for land vipers;* Mettaṃ Erāpathehi me, For water vipers, I have love; Chabyāputtehi me mettaṃ I have love for land pythons; Mettaṃ Kaṇhāgotamakehi ca. For water pythons, I have love.

Apādakehi me mettaṃ I have love for those with no feet; Mettaṃ dvipādakehi me, For those with two feet, I have love; Catuppadehi me mettaṃ I have love for those with four feet; mettaṃ bahuppadehi me. For those with many feet, I have love.

Mā maṃ apādako hiṃsi May those with no feet not hurt me; Mā maṃ hiṃsi dvipādako, May those with two feet not hurt me; Mā maṃ catuppado hiṃsi May those with four feet not hurt me; Mā maṃ hiṃsi bahuppado. May those with many feet not hurt me.

Sabbe sattā sabbe pāṇā May all beings, all those with life; Sabbe bhūtā ca kevalā, May all who have become, all in their entirety; Sabbe bhadrāni passantu May all see what is good; Mā kañci pāpam āgamā. May suffering not come to anyone.

Appamāṇo Buddho. Infinite is the Buddha; Appamāṇo Dhammo. Infinite is the Dhamma; Appamāṇo Saṅgho. Infinite is the Sangha. Pamāṇavantāni siriṃsapāni Finite are creeping things: Ahi vicchikā satapadī Snakes, scorpions, centipedes, Uṇṇānābhi sarabū mūsikā. Spiders, lizards and rats.

Katā me rakkhā. I have made the protection; Katā me parittā. I have made the safeguard; Paṭikkamantu bhūtāni. May the (harmful) beings depart. So’haṃ namo Bhagavato. I pay homage to the Sublime One, Namo sattannaṃ sammā-sambuddhānaṃ. I pay homage to the seven Buddhas.

* here I use modern groupings of snakes instead of the ancient 4 tribes of snakes. It is unlikely that the two ways of naming snakes are similar.

Brahmavihāra-Pharanam Reflections on Universal Well-Being Ahaṃ sukhito homi, May I abide in well-being, niddukkho homi, in freedom from affliction, avero homi, in freedom from hostility, abyāpajjho homi, in freedom from ill-will, anīgho homi, in freedom from anxiety, sukhī attānaṃ pariharāmi and may I maintain well-being in Myself.

Sabbe sattā sukhitā hontu, May everyone abide in well-being, sabbe sattāaverā hontu, in freedom from hostility, sabbe sattā abyāpajjhā hontu, in freedom from ill-will, sabbe sattā anīghā hontu, in freedom from anxiety, sabbe sattā sukhī attānaṃ pariharantu and may they maintain well-being in themselves.

Sabbe sattā sabbadukkhā pamuccantu Sabbe May all beings be released from all suffering. satta ma laddha-sampattito mavigacchantu And may they not be parted from the good fortune they have attained. (Men chant shaded text ) Sabbe sattā kammassaka When they act upon intention, all beings are the kammadāyādā (-dāyādo) owners of their action and inherit its results. kammayonī Their future is born from such action, kammabandhu companion to such action, kammapaṭisaraṇā (-sārano) and its results will be their home. yaṃ kammaṃ karissanti All actions with intention, kalýāṇaṃ vā pāpakaṃ vā be they skilful or harmful, tassa dāyādā bhavissanti of such acts they will be the heirs.

Kammassākāmhi (-komhi) “I am the owner of my choices, kammādāyādā (-dāyādo) heir to my choices, kammāyoni born of my choices, kammābandhu related to my choices, kamma-pāṭisāranā (-sārano) abide supported by my choices; yaṃ kammaṃ kārissāmi whatever choices I do make, kalýāṇaṃ vā pāpākaṃ vā tassā dāyādā (dāyādo) for good or for ill, bhāvissāmī ti of such acts I will be the heir.”

Sukhañca tividhaṁ dentu May they soon attain the threefold bliss and Khippaṁ pāpetha vomataṁ. realize the Deathless.

Iminā puñña-kammena Through the goodness that arises from my practice, Iminā uddisena ca And through this act of sharing, Khippāhaṁ sulabhe ceva May all desires and attachments Taṇhupādāna-chedanaṁ. quickly cease

Ye santāne hinā dhammā And all harmful states of mind. Yāva nibbānato mamaṁ Until I realize Nibbāna, Nassantu sabbadā yeva In every kind of birth, Yattha jāto bhave bhave. may I have an upright mind, Uju-cittaṁ -paññā With and wisdom, Sallekkho viriyamhinā austerity and vigor. Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā Then in the dark of the night, abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ a radiant obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami. Illuminated all Jeta’s Grove. Upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā She bowed down low ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho sā before the Blessed One devatā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi. Then standing to one side she said:

Asevanā ca bālānaṃ “Avoiding those of foolish ways, paṇḍitānaṃ ca sevanā, Associating with the wise, Pūjā ca pūjanīyānaṃ And honoring those worthy of honor. etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ. These are the highest blessings.

Yaṃ kiñci vittaṃ idha vā huraṃ vā Whatever treasure is here or beyond, Saggēsu vā yaṃ ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ Or precious jewel in the heavens Na no samaṃ atthi Tathāgatēna. None is equal to the Perfect One. Khayaṃ virāgaṃ amataṃ paṇītaṃ The calm Sakyan sage found cessation, Yadajjhagā Sakyamunī samāhito, Dispassion, the deathless, the sublime Na tēna Dhammēna samatthi kiñci. There is nothing equal to that state. Idampi Dhamme ratanaṃ paṇītaṃ, In the Dhamma is this precious jewel. Etēna saccēna suvatthi hōtu. By this truth may there be well-being.

Yaṃ Buddha seṭṭho parivaṇṇayī suciṃ That purity praised by the supreme Buddha, Samādhimānantarikaññamāhu, Called concentration with immediate result Samādhinā tēna samo na vijjati. Attha vīsatime Buddhā These twenty-eight Buddhas Pāretvā dasa pāramī having fulfilled the Ten Perfections, Jetvā mārāri sangāmam defeated the hosts of the Evil One, Buddhattam samupāgamum And attained Enlightenment. Ayañca dasasahassilokadhātu saṅkampi This enormously vast universal system did shake, sampakampi sampavedhi, appamāṇo ca uḷāro tremble and quake as a boundless, obhāso loke pāturahosi atikkamma devānaṃ unsurpassed radiance, appeared on the Earth. devānubhāvanti. Then the Blessed One affirmed: Atha kho bhagavā imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi: Kondanna has understood. “aññāsi vata bho, koṇḍañño, aññāsi vata bho, Yes, Kondanna has understood. koṇḍañño”ti. Thus, Venerable Kondanna got the name “Annakondanna: Kondanna who Understands” Iti hidaṃ āyasmato koṇḍaññassa “aññāsikoṇḍañño” tveva nāmaṃ ahosīti. Pabbajita-abhiṇha sutta Ten Subjects for Frequent Reflection [Dasa ime dhammā] There are ten dhammas pabbājitena which should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbā by one who has gone forth. kātāme dasa What are these ten?

Vevaṇṇiyamhi “I am no longer living according to ajjhūpāgāto ti worldly aims and values.” pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Parapaṭibaddhā me jīvikā ti “My very life is sustained through the gifts of pabbājitena others.” This should be reflected upon ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ again and again by one who has gone forth.

Añño me ākappo kārāṇīyo ti “I should strive to abandon my former habits.” pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Kacci nù kho me attā sīlāto na ùpavadatī ti “Does regret over my conduct arise in my mind?” pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Kacci nù kho maṃ ānuvicca viññū “Could my spiritual companions sabrahmācārī sīlāto na ùpavadantī ti find fault with my conduct?” Pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Sābbehi me “All that is mine, piyehi mānāpehi beloved and pleasing, nānābhāvo will become otherwise, vinābhāvo ti will become separated from me.” pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

(Men chant shaded text ) Kammassākāmhi (-komhi) “I am the owner of my kamma, kammādāyādā (-dāyādo) heir to my kamma, kammāyoni born of my kamma, kammābandhu related to my kamma, kamma-pāṭisāranā (-sārano) abide supported by my kamma; yaṃ kammaṃ kārissāmi whatever kamma I shall do, kalýāṇaṃ vā pāpākaṃ vā tassā dāyādā (dāyādo) for good or for ill, bhāvissāmī ti of that I will be the heir.” pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Kathambhūtassā me “The days and nights are relentlessly passing; rattindivā vītipātantī ti how well am I spending my time?” pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Kacci nù khohaṃ suññāgāre abhirāmāmī ti “Do I delight in solitude or not?” pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Atthi nù kho me uttari-mānussa-dhammā “Has my practice borne fruit with freedom or insight alamariyā-ñāṇa-dassana-viseso adhigāto sohaṃ so that at the end of my life I need not feel ashamed pacchime kāle sābrahmacārīhi puṭṭho na maṅku when questioned by my spiritual companions?” bhāvissāmī ti pabbājitena This should be reflected upon again and again ābhiṇhaṃ paccāvekkhitabbaṃ by one who has gone forth.

Ime kho dāsā dhammā pabbājitena ābhiṇhaṃ These are the ten dhammas to be reflected upon paccāvekkhitabbā ti again and again by one who has gone forth.

Taṅkhaṇika paccavekkhaṇa pāṭhaṃ Reflection on the Four Requisites [Paṭisaṅkhā] yoniso cīvaraṃ paṭisevāmi, Wisely reflecting, I use the robe: yāvadeva sītassa paṭighātāya, uṇhassa only to ward off cold, to ward off heat, paṭighātāya, ḍaṃsa-makasa-vātātapa-siriṃsapa- to ward off the touch of flies, mosquitoes, samphassānaṃ paṭighātāya, yāvadeva wind, burning and creeping things, hirikopina-paṭicchādanatthaṃ only for the sake of modesty.

Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso piṇḍapātaṃ paṭisevāmi, Wisely reflecting, I use almsfood: neva davāya, na madāya, na maṇḍanāya, not for fun, not for pleasure, na vibhūsanāya, yāvadeva imassa kāyassa ṭhitiyā, not for fattening, not for beautification, yāpanāya, vihiṃsūparatiyā, only for the maintenance and nourishment of this bramhacariyānuggahāya, body, iti purāṇañca vedanaṃ paṭihaṅkhāmi, for keeping it healthy, navañca vedanaṃ na uppādessāmi, for helping with the Holy Life; thinking thus, yātrā ca me bhavissati anavajjatā ca phāsuvihāro “I will allay hunger without overeating, so that I may cā ti continue to live blamelessly and at ease.”

Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso senāsanaṃ paṭisevāmi, Wisely reflecting, I use the lodging: yāvadeva sītassa paṭighātāya, only to ward off cold, to ward off heat, uṇhassa paṭighātāya, ḍaṃsa-makasa-vātātapa- to ward off the touch of flies, mosquitos, siriṃsapa-samphassānaṃ paṭighātāya, wind, burnìng and creeping things, yāvadeva utuparissaya vinodanaṃ only to remove the danger from weather, paṭisallānārāmatthaṃ and for living in seclusion.

Paṭisaṅkhā yoniso gìlāna-paccaya- Wisely reflecting, I use supports for the sick and bhesajja-parikkhāraṃ paṭisevāmi, medicinal requisites: yāvadeva uppannānaṃ veyyābādhìkānaṃ only to ward off painful feelings that have arìsen, vedanānaṃ paṭighātāya, abyāpajjha-paramatāyā ti for the maximum freedom from dìsease.
