Tubby Smith- Pressing

• Why do we press? o Force tempo o Makes up for deficiencies you may have We press when we see dribbler is out of control

-“We’re always quicker when we’re in the right spot.” No one plays more than 28 minutes (know limitations) -“55” Pressure ball Force Corner Contest the ball as close to baseline as we can Always see the ball as guy goes deep/ open up to ball immediately Go for steal with hand closest to the ball Man on ball jumps to ball/ DOES NOT DENY INBOUND If you get beat middle back tip with closest hand for teammate Everyone goes except PG as soon as the “zone” guy’s man leaves he jumps. Never come up to trap-trap in the backcourt REFER TO PICTURES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE! 1. We don’t run and jump…we run and trap! 2. Different philosophies on trapping-automatic traps lets players know their jobs Press is only effective with INTENSITY!!! -Remember: “They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!” -Remember: “Believe and do the right things!” -Zone Pressure 1-2-2 White o trap 1 st pass o look to intercept all lob and bounce passes o Talk all of the time (Duke intimidation) o Mismatches don’t beat you. Open shots beat you! o We’re not done trapping in half-court! Instead of help and recover we help and trap! • “Our guys know where to look for their steals” Our back men will not trap! o REFER TO PICTURES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE!

Bruce Weber- Fundamentals/ Skill Development

-Very Fortunate Good fortune comes from good work ethic o “I love this time.” “I love watching them work and improve.” “Go see college workouts.” “See how hard they go!” -B-Ball Is a Game of Repetition 1. Must Learn Basics 2. Must Make drills competitive

- Everyday We Work On: • Footwork • Ball Handling/practice • Shooting o Proper Technique Shot pocket! o Game Speed o Intensity • 1 on 1- Triple Threat • Build Up Into Team Things o PROGRESSIVE DRILLS! • Passing o “All they do is dribble now-they can’t pass”

Shooting • Keep it simple • Dig toes into the ground/this gets you lift! (J.J Redick) o Shooting is muscle memory “And the more muscles you work in a shot the more you can screw up your shot!” • Catch, shooting pocket, release! o Heel/toe on the catch! • Weighted Ball shooting (6lb ball): o strengthens wrist, legs for shot o keeps elbow in naturally to support the ball (if it goes out you will not get ball to the rim) Steve Nash does 75 from 3 ft., 75 from 5 ft., and 75 from 7ft. everyday o Include weighted ball in weight training o “hand in the hoop” o Ladder shooting (first with one hand and then with two, and then off of the pass do not pass ball unless players are in a shooting stance ready to catch and shoot!

o 3 man 2 ball shooting (corner, wing, elbow, etc.) Not stationary…on the move! • Shot (heel toe) • Rip through one dribble pull-up • Shot fake one dribble pull-up • Walk into shot • Run into shot • Walk/rip • Run/rip • Walk/shot fake • Run/shot fake 1, 2, 3 series • Shot, rip, shot fake • Again-start on block go to corner/start on wing and go to elbow, etc. (on the move!) Ball handling • Two ball stuff: o Together o Alternating Stationary and walking o Zig/zag o Zig/zag with a defender o Ball handling with contact Offensive player handling ball while defender with pad bumps and pushes up and down the floor. o FT circle-ball handler with defender and pad beating offensive player up while he keeps his handle in the circle o Weak hand series Crossover pass to weak hand Behind the back crossover pass to weak hand o Cone series Around tight cones low (below knees) with one hand Two dribble crossover Two dibble behind back Two dribble between leg In/out dribble • “Everyday do different skill work to keep it fresh” o Same skills with different drills! Rebounding • Body wars o Back to back-push out of circle Agility stuff-over cones • Two foot jump • One foot jump • Karaoke o Know do while catching/passing Put drills together (combo drills) • Start on block come to elbow (pad), catch on wing… o Rip for or layup o Rip for shot o Backdoor (plant foot) for layup o Same drill-one on one with 2 dribbles o 2 on 2 • Move on rope (not string) and keep rope tight - 3 one on one moves: 1. Jab and go 2. Jab and crossover 3. Jab and rockerstep (jab/bring back/go) Two men popping with one on one moves Do 2 on 0 shooting on a rope (or string…reference Duke) attacking with one on one moves, 2 nd player moving on a rope while spacing the floor for a kick and shot • Have defender w/ pad hit attacker/passer Same drill with screening • Backscreen (refer to notes) • Downscreen (notes) • Fade screen (notes) • Ball screen (notes) - Padded rips 1. Rip, 1-dribble, pull-up 2. Rip, 2-dribble, pull-up “Get used to contact” • Ganon Baker- separational vs. confrontational players - Game speed shooting w/chair as screen 1. Come off chair from block to corner (3 makes in :10) Set up by hitting foot on baseline 2. From corner to elbow (pop or curl) (3 makes in :10) Set up by hitting foot on corner 3. Flare from elbow to wing (3 makes in :10) Set up by hitting foot on elbow Remember to set up man on all screens 4. Combine them all for 3 makes in :10 Trick the guys and make it fun but make sure it is game speed 5. Do all three on each side for six shots in :22 - Zone shooting 1. Post passer in middle of paint w/ wing sliding and fading on perimeter 10 in a minute/20 in two minutes/103 in ten minutes - Weber sends assistants out to NBA practices! Bobby Knight-Defensive Philosophy

- Defense: 1. “Our” defense is not “my” defense, it’s what the kids can play 2. Defense must not allow cheap points in order to win • My view is a 3-2 on all SL/BL out of bounds is ideal 3. In , the mental is to physical at a 4:1 ratio! 4. Things defense must do: Box out (this also works on offensive rebounding in practice) • Remember the end of your defense is the beginning of your offense and vice versa o The goal of defense is getting the ball Remember that the box out is the last thing to do before getting the ball! I’d referee every minute of practice! • Eliminate FT’s by keeping hands off • Make more FT’s than opposition What are your kids capable of doing? 5. Defensive break: Defense must beat offense down the floor 6. Conversion-more important than offense and defense 7. Every practice should be full-court (no half-court stuff) 2 possessions-remember that defense begins the moment you give up the ball! • Communicate what teams will do o The kids must focus! o You can not explain things more than once because if they know you will they will tune you out the first time! STRESS COMMUNICATION STRESS FOCUS UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM COMMUNICATING THE FIRST TIME AND THAT WAY IN A HUDDLE I KNOW MY KIDS WILL LISTEN!!! No one will disrespect this game-this is how Coach Knight approaches the game and I love it! 8. Start defense at top of key It is our job as coaches to assess what we can do beyond that! Coach Knight uses numbers/letters in diagramming 9. Zone vs. Man to Man: In a zone: the offense dictates who we are guarding In a man to man: we tell the offense who we are going to guard • We are in control in a man to man!

10. Ball side and Help side Weakest part of a man to man defense is the help side defense Weakest offense is when the guard dribbles too much • Put them on an island! On defense we should force baseline and on offense we should attack baseline because the weakest part of a defense is the help for most teams Assess how you guard teams from scouting report • If a team is good at the backcut, don’t over pressure them, loosen up a bit Help side Rule: • NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF BALL! • The basketball is what you are trying to stop! • A bad attempt at the ball=mismatches and 5 on 4 opportunities o E. Butler-that hurts our team defense It’s not about your stats • That does not help US! • “You must shut off driving lanes with help side defense!” 11. COMMUNICATION Make them be quicker by being more commanding • “Green ball/regular offense/2 trips” o I’ve just told them who is in possession of the ball, what offense we’re in, what defense we’re in, how many possessions (conversions) to work on, and it is game setting in full court! • Build up to four possessions o Once they figure what the hell we’re doing… THEY MUST PAY ATTENTION AND WORK ON THEIR FOCUSING SKILLS o If one guy screws up then they all run! • If there is something particular we want to work on, do it, not every player needs the same amount of reps o It’s not an equal opportunity thing-starters need more reps • Closeouts-short and low 12. Three things defensively Play 5 on 4 • Offense in cut-throat Play 6 on 4 (2 offensive players in corners) • The four offensive players could be in cut-throat in this drill 5 man change (same direction, change player you are guarding) • I like change going full court in opposite direction as well o This would be a good conversion drill 13. Best position in the post against a good offensive player is behind You are not allowing angles • Split shoulder a bit but never allow angles 14. In help if the ball is above FT line the help man should be one step toward man on weak side If ball is below FT line the help man should be one step toward strong side lane line in help o Not necessarily on help line, but using it as a guide! 15. Help and recover The recover is every bit as important as the help. • Square stance on perimeter “This happens so much, we get guys in position but they don’t finish the play, they don’t do what needs to be done…get the ball!” One thing (team man to man) is all you need…but you must do it well! • Note: as much as Knight is perceived as a mean guy, as much as he bashes, he positively reinforces and praises players when they are doing what is right! In help and recover drills, have different spots on the floor for breakdown drills! • Do 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4 He says players are dumb-keep their heads down so they listen 16. Practice time full-court/drill work half-court 5 on 4 drill-must talk and must recover/conversion 4 on 5 • Note: “where were you,” “I was here,” “na, na, na…bullshit, you were here!” Knight tells it like it is! Recover with hands at hips Not finished until you box out! 17. Change Attack same basket Defense picks up anybody except man he was guarding 18. Post defense Note: refer to notes • Have a drill where post bumps cutter and gets to post defense position • Padded drills, beat the post player to position 19. Great offensive players utilize shot fakes, which is why great defensive players have excellent closeouts 20. Adjustments must happen 21. Switching If cutter goes low on screen you should not switch o If cutter goes high on screen you can switch o Don’t create mismatches on switches If there are, jam the offensive player o Defender gets under screen on switch to keep screener from slipping 22. The ball screen is effective because it is not defended well You can step out and hedge Switch Double • Force ball handler into screener’s defender who is in driving lane. • Switch on dribble drive offense 23. When screening, have players grab wrists and arms straight=prevents fouling

Frank Martin-Early Offense

- Early offense You can’t do early offense sometimes • If you’re going to run you have to do it all of the time. • If you run you have to give up some of the reigns and trust your players o Not %’s so much • “Get the right players the right shots from the right spots!” Off-season thoughts • Right now our whole objective is to get stronger o Less running now in the spring Pressure • One thing our team constantly does is pressure you Why do we run • When you let a team set up it’s a lot harder to score o Why attack a set defense? Slow team in a fast game-you’re in trouble Fast team in a slow game-you have a chance • Broken floor- o Running with numbers 4 on 3, 3 on 2etc. o Every drill is predicated on the broken floor mentality o It is a lot easier to slow down than to speed up Can’t remember the last time we worked or emphasized transition defense because we put our guys in those positions with our drills everyday o Broken floor drills: 2 on 1 continuous • White vs. black o White in a 2 on 1 with a two lines at half (one side white the other black) o As white crosses half a black jersey can trail the play defensively and crash board, then on a change of possession black goes the other way for a two on one with a white jersey trailing defensively • 3 on 2 continuous o Same idea Note: we can change up our 3 on 2 continuous vs. this one to work on different types of conversions! • Guard must take first pass o If you have a guard up top and a big down low, guard will take first pass because if big takes it guard will drop and be rebounder Note-in practice if they’re not running and going hard they will stay after and run (or hit the treadmill and coach has the button) • Primary to secondary drill o Starts with white shooting FT and teammate on other end on defense/black must inbound ball and push for a 3 on 2/then two white jump in on change of possession for a 4 on 3/then two black jump in for a 5 on 4/then we end 5 on 5 If wing is on same side as other wing, don’t push through, fill opposite side! Four minute drills o Compete! Have two teams, keep score, and have a validation…and RUN THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SCORE!!! I need to be consistent with validation because kids need to learn how to WIN! o “If you give in once, you’re dead! When players try to take shortcuts or get out of drills or do them half- ass it is just them trying to take shortcuts…it’s just players not exerting energy…it’s lazy!” I can not give in…EVER! Things need to be done the correct way everytime…I need to focus on that in order to get this program where it needs to be!!! o Position workouts: secondary break o PG: Box out pad at elbow and sprint to outlet area (above FT line, before hash mark) with but to the SL ready to catch and attack Advance to strong side wing on opposite end Sprint to fill PG lane, receive pass and drill jump shot (variations-pull-ups, shot fake pull- ups, rip and pull-up, catch attack off ball- screen for pull-up, etc.) • Now same drill but have wing denied….BEAUTIFUL, you’re inviting my best ball handler to attack the open floor! o Just pull-ups REFER TO NOTES o Wings: Same drill as PG except for wing…wing boxes out pad and sprints to strong side wing • Now game pull-ups, shot fake pull-up, rip pull-up, game drive to the hoop, post entry pass o NOTE: we should define what side each wing will take…even if they box out opposite side of floor, once we begin offense it is a dead spring to that side of the floor Right players the right shots at the right spots! o Again-if you don’t want to run in practice you will run the sidelines-your choice! NOTE: take one of my captains and make an example of him the first week of practice…let him know before hand! • Now switch sides (he has opposite side go all of the way to the corner) so strong side is FT line extended and weak side is corner…I like it! o Weak side guy works on back door lay-up, skip pass shooting (shot fake, rip, etc.) and finishing on a drive with shoulders square to basket! o Posts: TRAIN one post to take ball out of the basket and inbound (he will be our trailer!) (Z) Padded box out and go! • If you give in once you will give in all of the time. o It’s always Z…”but coach I was closer”…”No! Hit the stairs!” • Now post trails play and will either get a pull-up, shot-up drive, (for us set a screen and pop) or get dribbled at and backdoor o NOTE: If we are running hard and putting pressure on the defense we will get more offensive rebounds and more FT attempts and makes! o NOTE: My job as their coach is to tell them when it’s time to slow it down Low post sprints to right block and positions on wing entry for a pass from strong side wing or if PG keeps it on sealing the inside for a hi-low look from other post • If strong side position has been established and the ball is swung to high back to PG the low post should come up the lane and then pivot and seal man for hi-low position (refer to notes!) o NOTE: this is called triangle spacing • Low post must understand positioning and where to seal o “We shouldn’t have to pull it out and let the defense set up!” NOTE: My problem and our problem is not knowledge or our philosophy-it’s letting players get away with shit and making excuses-they do it in practice which means they’ll do it in a game and it shows-NO EXCUSES!!! • They don’t need to like me-don’t give in!!! I’m stubborn..this player is stubborn and he thinks he is starting?! I’ve only met one guy more stubborn than me and that’s my old boss”(Coach Huggins) o Some looks in secondary: PG skips or swings to weak side wing Opposite wing springs to opposite elbow area and backscreens for high post looking for lob…as this screen is happening the strong side low post is triangle spacing to opposite block (we don’t want a post entry there though…pass fake…we’re looking for lob) If not there we swing to the wing who has shaped up off back screen and now have the low post on a high-low looking for ball in paint, or the high post ducking in off of the lob, posting on an angle toward sideline. • NOTE: individual work for posts- screening and shaping up drills! o I believe in pressure-no one likes making decisions with pressure o I sat in these seats for 16 years as a high school coach! o Maximize good players but get all guys on team to feel a sense of purpose Create depth!!! Reward guys with playing time…not all of the time but every once in a while o “I’m not very smart but I’m smart enough to know that there are a lot of people who teach this game the right way and I’m willing to listen.”

Dana Altman-Attacking Zone Offense

- Zone offense: A lot of what we run against a man we can run against a zone We like to keep a lot of movement in our zone stuff We run quick hitters against a zone • NOTE: Know who you are and your personality-a coach he knew could drop F-bombs and be well liked..even his wife laughed…I can even say dang in front of my wife but she laughs at him saying it…know who you are. Against a zone-don’t just pass around the perimeter for a poor shot- same as man quick hitters • NOTE: instead of a screen you can make it a bump cut o NOTE: how often do refs call illegal screens…once a game Pick the ball-it’s 5 on 4-even if you don’t have ball handlers…we do it…you’re playing 5 on 4 • Players must have internal belief o This is how…I know how! BELIEF! o Do 2 trips, 3 trips, 4 trips (like Bobby Knight said) NOTE: don’t shoot long 2’s…get to the 3! REFER TO NOTES for looks and sets! • Mark-burn Altman’s DVD We have a zone system with quick hitters • Swinging around the perimeter does not put pressure on defense o NOTE: think-who do we want to get the shot for? • Again, zone stuff set up off of our man to man cuts o REFER TO NOTES I love this quick hitter!!! o NOTE: as Wooden did, each summer should have a focus on a new aspect of the game that I want to master…even if we won’t use it all Zone offense and screening a zone should be a focus! • Again-I can not let stuff go early-the first two weeks this past season I was good but after that I let them get away with stuff-if I want to coach in March I can not let shit go…EVER! o “A great program gets its best players to set picks!” They run X-2 o NOTE: a wing cut/roll back to same corner for skip if very effective! REFER TO NOTES for looks!

Alan Stein -Agility

- “What we do now in the spring/summer will determine success for next season.” - Our workouts should be: 1. Organized 2. Structured 3. Progressive - “I consider myself a big picture guy.” Goals for workout • Improve communication • Get tougher o Remember that you get whatever you bring Bring enthusiasm Bring energy We must strengthen the ankle! • Knee and back injuries begin with the ankle o First thing-barefoot drills to strengthen the ankle “It’s hard to strengthen ankle with tape and braces.” We want to expose the ankle and strengthen it! • One foot-close eyes • One foot/hands to floor • One leg squats • Two leg squats o Consistency!!! Have a standardized warm-up. • Have a progressive warm-up o Jog 2/step back 1 to half o Backwards-3 back/1 forward o Jog 2/slide 2 o Backwards-back 2/slide 2 o 1 step and jump o Jumps Cross, up, toes in/toes out Dynamic stretching: • You want to be physically and mentally engaging before practice-it gets players focused o “I like stacked stretching, just at the end of practice Some examples: • Lunge and reach (look up at both hands) • Knees bent, feet flat, hands on the floor, stand straight up without bending knees • Foot flat, stretch ball out in front of you as far as you can while on one foot (lift opposite leg behind you) • Same thing on an angle • Reach back with ball, kick leg behind you Strength training: • Note: not weight training! • Everything has to be safe! • Time efficient • Two days a week for 45 minutes o Kids have so much going on! We have to remember that! • Must be progressive o 1st strength workout with no weights! Agility • Tennis ball stuff o Coach has two tennis balls in outstretched arms/the coach drops one and has the player react, he must catch it before two bounces and stand still Stopping and going establishes good habits • Do not ANTICIPATE the drop…REACT to the drop o “We’re not training anticipation, we’re training reaction!” o Now coach has two balls, drops one (catch before two bounces) and tosses other (catch before two bounces) o Two ball dance-coach in circle with player around- coach drops ball and player reacts and catches, tosses back to coach If one/two steps away-push step and catch If more than two it’s a crossover step (basically opening and sprinting to the ball) • Great conditioner o Teaching how to read and react! o Mirror drill-set up six cones in a huge rectangle and have a player on one half and another player on the other half-one player makes a move (any move) on his side and the player must mirror that move exactly on his side. REFER TO NOTES o Now play tag in the huge rectangle-you can’t leave- go until player gets all of his teammates or see how many tags you can get in 30 seconds Now play tag but “it” has to handle the ball while chasing teammates! • Great agility workout! o Make enthusiasm contagious! o Argentina drill with weighted ball o Hand slap-you are not slapping hands-have players hand over coaches while he holds a tennis ball in each-coach drops the ball and he has to react and catch it before it hits the floor Now call which hand! Now start hands three inches below Now start hands behind back o Tennis ball off backboard-go get it at its highest point with an extended arm/then come down and immediately spring up and hit backboard! • Card workout o Start by focusing by showing card and have player telling number and suite quickly o Then the coach has a deck of cards-throw ten cards and see how many player can catch (if they catch drop to floor)/when done with ten player has to spring and count and touch all ten cards on the floor. • “There is only one day you hold the ball at your side-picture day…all other days you hold like this (triple threat) in an attack position.” • Footwork-5 players in small circle with 5 players in a bigger circle around them-slide to teammate slide out on angle and then slide and hit next teammate o You can do this with closeouts, ball handling attack moves, triple threat moves, closeout boxouts…etc. • Two lines on opposite ends of floor-keep ball going off backboard and sprint to opposite rim and keep it going (:30)

Coach Alococo (De La Salle High School)-Building a Defense

- Some thoughts to start : We have to coach attitude • “We teach best what we most need to learn.” o Balbo-father of modern defense • Set tone with defensive drills o “We’re here to defend!” • Speak objectives in the drills-reinforce what you are trying to do! o With communication players are: More sure More confident More focused • This past year we weren’t supposed to do much as we lost everybody and one of the greatest players we’ve ever had transferred..we went 29-3 because WE DEFENDED…NO EXCUSES!!! Communication is concentration Defense is action not reaction You will get whatever you demand…so demand PERFECTION! Build habits We must always be talking (communicating) Discourage drives with active feet Always be ready to give help, but never expect it as the on-ball defender A great team is a team of friends • Build friendship-we don’t let each other down! o Chase chicken drill (Rocky II) This generation knows how to manipulate to get what they want…DON’T LET THEM! A kid with a great attitude can change if around wrong influence • “In moments of stress we revert back to bad habits-how do you break those habits…WITH FOCUS!!! MAKE PRACTICES HARD-DO IT PERFECT-THEN THE GAME IS EASY!!! The possession does not change, the play does not end until we have the ball- • On boxing out: o Our mentality should be: “When the shot goes up we think…IT’S ON NOW!” Most kids-when the ball is shot the play stops…NO-this mentality needs to change immediately! • The play begins when you shoot! Defensively our hands should be like “wild birds” DISCIPLINE/LOVE/SACRIFICE EMBRACE ADVERSITY! Post defense- has some great thoughts (REFER TO NOTES) • In six point defense drill, the posts should have a bit different focus in how they guard the post and where they are closing out from Closing thoughts: • BE A GOOD TEAMMATE o Family, friends, etc. (it translates to everything!) “We, as coaches, have to be the one’s doing this because kids don’t see this anywhere else.” • Blue Angels-kid told coach that his team reminds him of the Blue Angels Precision-everything is together • “Practicing Perfection” We can always be practicing something-they eat together, walk together in formation..everything! • Practice to be perfect in everything you do-focus on doing everything right-you’ll win some games o BE A GREAT TEMMAMATE!

Jay Wright-Offensive sets

- Coach Wright walks in with a great enthusiasm-walks up to coach of St. Xavier- “Hey, how you doing”-seems like a great man! - Hi scoring team (in the Big East, most point pg) but I consider myself a defensive coach. I’m here to discuss offense today but you have to play defense to win-YOU MUST PLAY DEFENSE! - You offense should: Fit your personnel-it must be good for my team Think about how teams in your league defend you Teach them HOW TO PLAY-NOT HOW TO RUN A PLAY! Teach them how to react to a defense • We have 3 or 4 sets that we always use o NOTE: a set is the formation in which you set up In the NBA-from 18 to 8 seconds teams will run a cut with two options Under 8 seconds teams will play out of concepts! 2 OFFENSIVE TRUTHS: • Spacing is offense and offense is spacing • Reverse the ball and make a play • NOTE: you are the most open when you first catch the ball so we do a lot of breakdown stuff-catch and shoot, or catch and make a game move (individual and position breakdowns) 4 SETS (REFER TO NOTES) • Spread set o 4 around 1 (on block) • Pin set o PG at top of key, one side has a stack, the other lane line has big on the block with the 3 at the FT line • Horn set o PG up top, with a stack on right side, the 2 on the block and the 4 at the wing-the 2 comes off a double and the 3 comes off the single by the 4 • Flash set o 4 around 1 (big at FT line) • NOTE: SPACING OVERRULES EVERYTHING! • NOTE: you can space your offense out anyway you want but how will the defense play you? It’s not just offensive spacing-it’s how the defense will play you 5 ACTIONS we want out of these sets: • Drive and space • Iso drive o Player starts at top of key and MUST drive to rim • Sprint out ball screens • Post and rip • Screener/cutter o The cutter reads the defense and the screener reads the cutter o Screener must work just as hard to get open as the cutter On all middle drives look opposite Thoughts • With most teams on a drive all four players space but the play is over o There are three drives Baseline drive, middle drive, slot drive • “If you don’t have a great ball handler you don’t stop drive and space o Drive, space, pivot and look at SECOND CUT Cut and fill action • (REFER TO NOTES) • This dvd might be a good one to get to break some more of this action down!

Coach Showalter-Practice thoughts

- Opening remarks “It’s Sunday morning, I’ve been coaching for 36 years now and my wife said to me- do you think anyone is going to come and hear you speak?” - He speaks for openly and I can relate to him much more as he is relating typical problems of a high school coach Teach lounge with mean teacher talking bad about one of his players • He told her that it’s a shame that some people don’t do what their supposed to do with energy and passion. It’s funny- we can work on deny defense for first two weeks of practice but then our first game we get burned with our on the ball defense! • We, as high school coaches, only have two weeks to get our stuff in before our first game! o We are in a completely different boat-we don’t get workouts from August to October-we have two weeks They have 27 managers, 8 assistants-I’m lucky with 1 manager and 1 assistant • When I coached TEAM USA 16 and under we were able to do everything because of our unbelievable talent o With my guys-we have to make adjustments! I like to stress combo drills to work on more than one thing at a time • TIME and PLACE We have to make sure that what we do fits PASSION-EVERYDAY • Work camps-learn the game o Make networking a priority! - Practice Thoughts 1. Create a positive atmosphere that players want to come to We as coaches create it! Bring passion everyday! 2. Best teams have best players working the hardest The biggest motivation to this is the bench • Do what you’re supposed to do or you’re sitting next to me 3. Hard work beats talent but talent doesn’t work hard 4. Be consistent everyday, regardless of game outcome Consistent leadership-they’ve got to know what to expect • “Meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same”

5. Players are products of expectations The Gold Standard 6. What is important to you as a coach will become important to the team When your players tell the media what we teach that tells when you hit home 7. Team building activities Have players do an “I am ….”paper (one page) Quiz on offensive/defensive schemes Terminology quiz Assign a book report • Team specific or player specific 8. Communication circle Hold hands, look to the person to the right and answer the question or prompt of the day Eye contact Different topic everyday • What if your greatest weakness • What is our strength as team • What is your greatest fear • What is your favorite movie • What is basketball o This sounds cheesy but it brings people together Lalo at Andy’s house/the 09’ team at the Fuder’s for team breakfast • “I value you because….” • Must have consistency!!! 9. Team must be invested and take ownership Have captains scout Have players run practice • Remember-this is their team! 10. Make drills competitive There are winners and there are losers in basketball! • Losing is painful-must learn to win • Must be worthy of winning o “Don’t tell me how many games you played in AAU…tell me how much you’re in the gym working…with AAU, winning doesn’t matter” • Keep score/clock • Have players determine punishment for losers o Push-ups, sprints, stairs, etc. 11. Sandwich method -positive/negative/positive • Come at a player with a positive, then hit him with criticism, but close with a positive-I know you can do it! 12. Do I coach every play-NO Players make plays in the flow of the game • We must teach them how to play, how to react, and how to make decisions o Players make the plays! 13. Don’t worry about mistakes Observe players’ attitudes after a mistake! • So important to respond to things in the right way o Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it 14. Teach in soundbytes not paragraphs This is so important • Coach K’s point- you don’t want to flood players o I always explain-everything “Get to help” NOT- “you need to get to help because you are two passes away and your man is not a threat…you need to stop the ball and the ball is over there…” 15. Awareness-coach must know what is going on! 16. Must decide on NON-NEGOTIABLES What do we really want to emphasize?! • Can not get to lane • Must be help on baseline drive o You can not have 20 NON-NEGOTIABLES Keep them specific • Off ball screen you must always take two dribbles - Goal # 1-play hard: Playing hard is: • Take 2 charges a game • Majority of 50/50 balls • Double figure deflections • Shoot more ft’s than opponent-attack basket • Get more rebounds o Chart all of this - Goal #2-play together: Playing together is: • Having an assist to turnover ratio of 2:1 • Being a GOOD TEAMMATE - Check out Kevin Eastman stuff on fundamentals-he’s the best - If you come to our practice I hope you leave saying that the kids play extremely hard - Grab captains and explain drill to them They have 10 seconds to explain and setup for the drill

- Some drills: 1. Perfect layup Three lane rush-if ball does not hit rim=2 points • You want 22 in one minute 2. 120 drill 25 in minute 3. Texas drill In one minute they need to make 50 layups • Make players listen the first time-if they know that you’ll explain it again to them they’ll tune it out the first time because they know that they don’t have to pay attention! • EXPLAIN IT ONE TIME o SHOW ME IN PRACTICE 4. Texas drill continued Now, instead of two lines for full court lay-ups we go four lines- outlet, sprint, receive return pass from the receiver for jump shot, then shooter goes to that line and passer goes to opposite corner where he will be shooter on that side of the floor. 5. CUT THROAT- 3 on 3 (you can go 2 on 2, 4 on 4, 5 on 5) • Rules o Thank passer for score o Catch square in a triple threat o After pass you have to move (cut or screen) Coach is stopping for every time one of the rules are not followed “You did not move, you did not catch in a triple threat, etc.) • We have to determine our own offensive NON-NEGOTIABLES and use them in cut-throat, which ultimately teaches the guys to play out of principles/concepts, which is what we will want after our 20/specials breakdown! Defensive cut throat (half court and full court) • No baseline drive for layup • No middle lane o This really works help/recover He does stop and commend the positives - He closes with his card and says he will send us all this stuff Says thank you and that he stole all of this from someone Know that there are people that helped you get where you are • Gratuity-be thankful for all-this is not a secret-all of the greats do it!

Paul Hewitt-4 around 1 Motion - Starts with some drills Full court layups with less than four layups Same drill but crossover and elbow to finish on opposite side using the rim to stop the shot blocker Pass back and forth no dribbles 3 man leave (touch line after pass) • Talk-communicate on offense/communicate on defense Perfection drill • :45 seconds on clock o Get a layup for each wing, the post, a trailer jump shot, and a pull up for PG! • On trail 3 PG should get into the paint This is “flash” drill but back and forth-must make them all Get the ball out of the hoop • Then do the same drill with all jump shots o Shot selection!!! o Ball should not hit the floor until last shot - says to win the first and last 4 minutes of last quarter - “Never overlook a simple detail” Next year we must have a team contract • I manage team based on standards that we create! - Offensive stuff Post’s job is to score Be selfish in the post • Commit to players this year that are committed to us! Try it and know…Mark/Matt-good kids that will give their hearts! - Dribble at high post and backdoor/replace - Swing/fade screen (top guy and wing guy) - Swing to weak side wing/post comes from post on weak side to set a ball screen (two man game) If you cut you’re GONNA MEAN IT! - Cuts: 1. Flex screens 2. Back screens 3. Down screens 4. Fade screens - “If you’re not sure what’s going in, attack with jabs out of triple threat-not above your head or dribbling-keep it triple threat until it clears up.” Thoughts-secondary/special/concepts-we teach concepts with cutthroat (eventually, it may become our offense-motion) Must work with Mark on low post moves-be a Noah for us Remember-I can’t use all of this! Always refer back to notes!
