Rantanen Vaults Past Eriksson: April's Big Ten Track & Field EVENT Athlete of the Month, sophomore Vesa Rantanen (Virrat, Finland), set a lOOm Dash new U of M pole vault record this season. Rantanen broke the record with Shelton Benjamin a meet winning vault of 18-5 1/4 at the Texas Relays on April 5. He Fred Rodgers eclipsed Martin Eriksson's mark of 18-4 3/4 which he set in 1993. Tim Van Voorhis Rantanen's efforts this season have automatically qualified him for the 200m Dash Adam Freed NCAA Championships. Ron Hoffner 1,500m Run Strand Leaps Into Record Books: Freshman Staffan Strand Nate Clay (Upplands-Vasby, Sweden) broke the U of M freshman record in the high Mike Stoick jump with a mark of 7-4 1/2 at the Texas Relays on April 5. He then tied 3,000m Steeplechase his record at the Adidas Oregon Classic on May 11. Rick Obleman Tony Riter 5,000m Run Golden Gophers at the 1996 Big Ten Outdoor Chris Anderson Championships: The University of Minnesota turned in a runner-up Charles McClure performance at the 96th Annual Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Rick Obleman May 17-19 at Nittany Lion Track on the campus of Penn State University, Jeremy Polson 110m Hurdles scoring 104.5 points. Two Golden Gophers earned event titles as senior Niles Deneen Jason Schlueter (New London, Wis.) captured the discus with a throw of Ben Jensen 185-0 and Rantanen won the pole vault with a mark of 17-10. The U of M Aaron Wheatcraft 4x1 oom relay team also earned a first place, finishing the event in a time 400m Hurdles of 41.11.
