Scope and Content: This collection contains family photographs originally owned by Alice (Sherbondy) Baldwin (1853-1900) and later by her only daughter, Gertrude Alice (Baldwin) Jackson (1873-1957). The pictures feature Alice and her siblings as well as her children, nieces and nephews, and cousins and their children as well as many friends and extended family. Intermingled are also some pictures from the Baldwin family---that of Alice Sherbondy’s husband Darius Harrison Baldwin (1847-1874). Both the Sherbondy and Baldwin families were from Summit County, mainly from the Akron and Richfield areas.

BALDWIN FAMILY The letters in file 2 present some confusion when compared to the 1840 and 1850 federal census records in regard to the name of Darius Harrison Baldwin’s parents. The census records indicate his parents were David D. & Eunice Baldwin; One source indicates David D. Baldwin’s wife as Abby Robinson; The letters see to indicate the parents were Guy C. Baldwin & Clarissa (1816-1849) Baldwin. So the exact names of the parents are not known.

1. Darius Harrison Baldwin (c. 1847-8 Feb 1874) (see Alice Sherbondy) 2. Malona O. Baldwin (c. 1833-) 3. Albert G. Baldwin (c. 1840-25 Feb 1863) died during the Civil war of consumption 4. Mary Baldwin (c. 1845-) 5. James H. Baldwin (c. 1837-) 6. Eunice Baldwin (28 Aug 1849-22 Nov 1939) & Josiah E. Turner (6 Sept 1845-29 Jan 1921) 1. Arthur Turner (c. 1869-) 2. Frank Turner (12 Oct 1873-) 3. Stella Turner (c. 1879-) 4. Ralph Turner (c. 1880-) 5. Clyde H. Turner (c. 1890-) ~~This may not be a complete list of the siblings of Darius Harrison Baldwin and they may not all have the same 2 parents ~~One of the Baldwin girls was married to Alonzo Ellis

Access: No restrictions

Provenance: This collection was donated to OGS in October 2003 by Paul Timothy & Patricia A. (Gist) Shirley, formerly of 2410 Empire Grade in Santa Cruz, California. Everything in this collection had come from the estate of Paul’s mother, Dorothy Gray “Dot” (Cully) Shirley-Jackson (4 Jan 1910-28 Dec 2000). Dorothy’s first husband and the father of Paul was Paul Curtis Shirley (21 Mar 1907-10 Nov 1967). Dorothy Cully Shirley then married Walter Gilbert Jackson (19 Sept 1909-25 Oct 1996). Walter was the last living child of Gertrude Alice (Baldwin) & Walter Arnold Jackson and the last living grandchild of Alice (Sherbondy) & Darius Harrison Baldwin. He likely inherited them after the death of his oldest sister, Agnes G. (Jackson) LaCroix (15 Sept 1896-6 May 1976). Agnes likely inherited them from her oldest sister Fern L. (Jackson) Peltz-Petrie (6 July 1894-11 Sept 1969) who would have inherited them after the death of her parents: Gertrude Alice (Baldwin) Jackson (17 Apr 1873-13 May 1957) and Walter Arnold Jackson (8 June 1872-15 Feb 1959). Since none of Gertrude and Walter Jackson, Sr.’s children had any children of their own, and since Gertrude Baldwin Jackson was the only child of Alice (Sherbondy) & Darius Harrison Baldwin, there are no living descend- ants of Alice Sherbondy & Darius Harrison Baldwin. Since this collection had belonged to Paul Shirley’s mother’s 2nd husband, the Shirley family had no interest in it. Because the Jackson and Baldwin families both originated in the Akron, Ohio area, the Shirleys decided to donate the collection to OGS.
