For example, the Reform movement tends to avoid the phrase that affirms God as mechayei hameitim (reviving the dead), replacing those words with an expression that God gives life to all. In these challenging weeks, the dangers facing our brothers and sisters Parashat Masei 5774 / 2014 in Israel weigh deeply upon hearts, minds, and souls, and there have been many prayers written that engage us directly with the dangers faced by Israelis, and in some cases also the dangers faced by Palestinians. As the Torah states, “To whomever is good in their eyes” (Chapter 36:6). These women demonstrated their sterling character when they chose to stick with their family tree and keep the pedigree. They were aware of the explanation of SFORNO (1470-1550) that, because it was originally the will and “Ratzon HaShem” not to mingle the tribes with each other, and although they were allowed to follow their hearts desire in finding their mates, they insisted on fulfilling the mitzvah of not mixing up the genealogy, because HaShem commanded it to Moshe. Thus, the daughters exhibited true Ahavat HaShem (love of G-d). This concept is beautifully explained in Mesilas Yeshorim, “Path of the Just” in Chapter 18, regarding the trait of saintliness, where one who truly loves his creator will not fulfill his obligations by means of the duty which is accepted by all of Israel in general. Instead, he will react in much the same way as a son who loves his father.

Parshiot Matos-Masei 28 Tammuz 5777 /July 22, 2017 Shabbat Mevorchim Menachen Av Daf Yomi: Sanhedrin 6; Nach Yomi: Iyov 23 Weekly Dvar Torah A project of the NATIONAL COUNCIL OF YOUNG ISRAEL SPONSORED BY THE HENRY, BERTHA AND EDWARD ROTHMAN FOUNDATION ROCHESTER, NY,CLEVELAND, OHIO, CIRCLEVILLE, OHIO Words Are Not Enough Rabbi Boaz Tomsky Associate Member, Young Israel Council of Rabbis One of the most beautiful Jewish life-cycle rituals is the Pidyon HaBen ceremony. The father, holding his first-born month- old baby son, turns to the Kohain, and says “Zeh Beniy Bechorey” ─ this is my first born son. It is difficult to understand the way in which the Kohain responds. He asks the father one question: “Maiy Bais Tefay”— what do you prefer; “Litan Li Bincha Bechorch,” do you want to give away your first born son, “Oh Bays Lifdosa Bechamesh Selayi,” or would you prefer to redeem him for five shkalim? Is the Kohain actually giving the father an ultimatum, to choose between his son or money? What lesson are we to learn from this? I believe we can find the answer in this week’s Parsha. As the Bnai Yisrael were on the verge of entering into the land of Canaan, two of the Shvatim (tribes), Reuven and Gad, approached Moshe Rabbeinu with a special request. Instead of settling in the Land of Israel with the other tribes, they wished to remain in Gilad, on the east of the Jordan River. Their choice of words is most noteworthy: “pens for the flock shall we build here for our livestock and cities for our small children.” They indicated they would first tend to the needs of their possessions and only afterwards, to the needs of their children.

War is waged against Midianfor their role in plotting the moral destruction of Israel, and the Torah gives a detailed account of the war spoils and how they were allocated amongst the people, the warriors, the Levitesand the high priest. The tribes of Reuben and Gad (later joined by half of the tribe of Manasseh) ask for the lands east of the Jordan as their portion in the Promised Land, these being prime pastureland for their cattle. Moses is initially angered by the request, but subsequently agrees on the condition that they first join, and lead, in Israel’s conquest of the lands west of the Jordan.

  • Who Has Not Lived Through This Question During a Long
“Are we there yet?” Who has not lived through this question during a long car ride? We usually blame the children in the back seat for being fidgety and impatient, but let’s be honest, what about the adults? The same sense of restlessness comes up during long flights. For the past thirty years, my destinations have rarely been different than either Israel or Argentina. In both cases, the flights to reach my destination are over ten hours long; this is without counting travel time to the airport or the additional time needed at the airport prior to boarding the plane, never less than two hours. All this leads to the question, what is more important, the journey or the destination? As we look into this week’s Torah portion – a combination of the two last portions in the Book of Numbers, Matot-Masei, we are invited to reflect on this same question. In addition to concentrating on the return to the Promised Land, the biblical text, in particular the last portion – Masei - provides us with a detailed account of each time the Children of Israel settled in any given location and the times when they picked up and moved towards their next destination. This detailed description forces us to think that, maybe, the journey s as important as the destination. I will then suggest that this is one of the lessons of this week’s Torah portion, the one that I would like to concentrate on; the importance of the journey. We are Jews. We are constantly on a journey; not only a physical journey but, most importantly, a spiritual journey.

  • Spark, the Tribe Parasha Activity Sheet That Will Help You Bring Judaism to Life in a Varied and Exciting Way
Welcome to Spark, the Tribe Parasha activity sheet that will help you bring Judaism to life in a varied and exciting way. I’d like these activities to enthuse the children and show them how the Torah given almost 3500 years ago is still as relevant and as exciting in our lives today. Thank you for offering to run a Children’s Service, for all the hard work you put into it and for making a real difference to so many young people. The US is very proud of the numerous Children’s Services that are run every week across the UK and this would not happen without you. Spark gives you an overview of the weekly Parasha, songs, an activity, discussion questions or D’var Torah linked to the Parasha or important event that week. Every Children’s Service will be different, in terms of how many participants there are, their age range, its length and the varying abilities of the children. Please read through the document and find the activities that will best suit the needs of your group. It is advisable to read it before Shabbat in case there is some preparation that may be needed in advance. I am sure the children at your shul will benefit from Spark. Please be in touch if you have any queries, feedback or if we can be of any help. Thank you again for the work you do in enabling so many young Jews to access their heritage and traditions in such an exciting way. All it takes is a small spark of interest, to ignite a raging flame of passion for Judaism.
