Missouri University of Science and Technology became a member of the Great Lakes Valley Con- ference beginning in the 2005-06 academic year as one of three institutions joining the confer- ence in its expansion.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference made its name throughout the last 25 years as a power in NCAA Division II . In the last few years, however, the GLVC has seen success in many sports, and now the league can claim itself as one of the nation's top in all Division II athletics.

The addition of Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Quincy, Wisconsin-Parkside and Missouri-St. Louis in the mid-1990s allowed the GLVC to become an immediate national power in several sports such as men's and women's soccer, women's and tennis.

At the start of the 2005-06 season, Missouri S&T, Drury University and Rockhurst University – all of whom have had a good deal of success at the regional and national levels in various sports – have enhanced the league’s reputation at the NCAA Division II level.

Along with its expansion came the hiring of the league's first full-time commissioner in 1996. In 2001, an associate commissioner was also added to the full-time conference staff and the GLVC’s first full-time sports information director was added in the summer of 2006.

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bel- larmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.

Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis (1995). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 sea- son. IPFW left the GLVC following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU Edwardsville will leave the conference after the 2007-08 season.

The conference expanded to include women's basketball in 1983-84 and immediately established a women's-men's doubleheader format in league play to ensure maximum exposure for both squads. The GLVC plays its games on Thursday and Saturday nights in November, Decem- ber, January and February.

The GLVC can claim schools in all of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), and St. Louis (SIU Edwardsville/UM-St. Louis).

The conference sponsors 17 championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, , soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and for women.

In 2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted in 2002.

About Missouri S&T 4

Missouri University of Science and Technology is now in its 137th year as one of the nation’s premier universities for science and technology. But while the university’s reputation has been for the quality of its engineering program, it is quickly becoming a well-rounded institution that now offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 35 fields.

Missouri S&T is located in a picturesque area of Missouri in the wooded hills of south central Missouri near the Ozarks. The 284-acre campus is located nearly halfway between St. Louis and Springfield, Mo., but within a reasonable drive of a number of state parks, lakes and several of Missouri’s well-known vineyards, not to mention being a short walk away from the downtown area of a town ranked as one of the best 100 small towns in the in Norm Crampton’s The 100 Best Small Towns in America.

The campus itself has an enrollment of over 5,500 students, with a student- faculty ratio of 14 to 1. Missouri S&T is one of four campuses that comprise the University of Missouri system. The university, founded as the Missouri School of Mines in 1870 as the first engineering school west of the , has written the book on education in science and engineering and is broadening its scope in the 21st century.

While the university began as a mining school, the university has also prepared its students for leadership roles in engineering, science and liberal arts. Missouri S&T can boast of over 1,000 entrepreneurs among its graduates and hundreds of others in corporate leadership positions.

In addition, the university has broadened its academic scope beyond engineering as it now has programs for its students in business, education (pre-elementary and secondary), English, history and various other pre-professional fields such as pre-law, pre-medicine and pre-nursing as well as speech and media studies. But as far as the engineering fields go, Missouri S&T offers a wide range of options for students to go into. The university offers more than a dozen different engineering programs for its students to study.

A number of Missouri S&T graduates have gone on to have great success. Included among the alumni are Mervin Kelly (1914), whose work on amplifying tubes led to improved long-distance communication; George Mueller (1936), who is credited with being the driving force behind the first lunar landing in 1969; Ted Weise (1967), who formerly served as the president of FedEx; and Gary Forsee (1972), the current president of the University of Missouri system and former chief executive officer of Sprint. In addition, three Missouri S&T graduates have been part of NASA’s space shuttle program: Tom Akers (1973), who was part of the space shuttle team that retrieved a satellite in space in 1992 and is now a member of the faculty at Missouri S&T ; Janet Kavandi (1982) and Sandra Hall Magnus (1986). Todd DeGraffenreid enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Miners after leading the team to its best record during his tenure of Todd DeGraffenreid the program. Head Coach Missouri S&T finished the 2007 season with a record of 20-27 and had a significant say in the Great Lakes Valley Conference playoff race down the stretch. The Miners knocked off three teams -- Quincy, Rockhurst and Northern Kentucky -- who were still in contention for playoff berths and nobody among that trio qualified for the event. In addition, S&T won the season series over eventual tournament champion Drury.

The Miners had a record of 11-41 record during their first season in the GLVC, but despite the record, proved that they could play with the top teams in the conference. Missouri S&T swept a doubleheader from a Quincy team that made it to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, played GLVC champion Northern Kentucky to three one- games and won two of three contests from an Indianapolis team that also made the confer- ence tournament field.

S&T also had the league's top freshman as voted by league coaches in Thomas McCormick, an who led the Miners in hitting during the 2006 campaign.

Missouri S&T finished 11-43 in 2004 after going 16-33 in DeGraffenreid's first year at the helm. The Miners also finished with an 11-20 conference record in 2004, but S&T was one of only two teams in the nation to post two victories over a Central Missouri State team that placed third in the NCAA Division II World Series. The other team to pull the feat was eventual na- tional champion Delta State.

S&T also posted a win over Emporia State during that season; the Hornets later participated in the NCAA Central Regional tournament.

DeGraffenreid became the Missouri S&T head coach after serving as an assistant coach at William Woods University for three seasons while also playing . He started his minor league careeer in the 1999 season when he played on a championship team in London (Ont.) in the . During that season, DeGraffenreid led all rookie third basemen in hitting, hits, home runs and stolen bases.

He later played for Richmond and for the in that league before playing in 2002 for San Angelo and Fort Worth.

DeGraffenreid attended Lincoln University, where he was a standout at a time when the Blue Tigers were emerging as a top team in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. He later served as an assis- tant coach at LU during which Lincoln posted a second place finish in the MIAA Tournament in 1999.

DeGraffenreid, who completed work on a bachelor's degree in kinesiology in 2000, is originally from Searcy, Ark.

Head Coach: Todd DeGraffenreid 2008 Miner Preview 11

The Miners’ 2007 baseball season was one that saw them play well against a number of contenders, as they picked up late season victories that helped prevent Quincy, Rockhurst and Northern Kentucky from making the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and win the season series over tournament cham- pion Drury.

As the 2008 season gets ready to begin the Miners would like to parlay that role of spoiler in the latter stages of 2007 into a contender’s spot for a playoff berth this spring.

It will be a challenge, as the GLVC West Division includes national semifinalist Southern Indiana, defend- ing regular season champion Southern Illinois Edwardsville, which is in its last season as a member of NCAA Division II, and Drury.

Miner head coach Todd DeGraffenreid feels his team is more than ready to take on that challenge to try to get the Miners into one of the six playoff spots in May.

The Miners have a number of returning starters among the position players, including all three starting from the 2007 season. Thomas McCormick, who played at first base for much of his sopho- more year, will return to the outfield and figures to man right field.

McCormick had a strong finish to the campaign to .286 and tied for the team lead in runs batted in with 20, then followed that with a performance in the summer where he earned the league’s most valu- Senior lefthander Matt Campbell able player honor while playing for the . tied the school record for wins in a season last spring by going 6-3. Gerad Fox, a .320 hitter and solid performer in center field last spring, returns to that spot as does Robby Martin in left. Martin hit .259 with 16 runs batted in also finished second on the team in runs scored to Fox with 22. Andrew Vance, who saw playing time as a reserve last season, will serve as a backup in the outfield along with redshirt freshman Kyle Giovannini and freshman Kyle Boehm.

The left side of the Miner is also intact with Eaf Redden at third base and Cody Bass at shortstop. Redden hit .269 with 20 runs batted in last season, while Bass was steady at the shortstop position throughout the year. Redshirt freshman Louie Joseph is the leading contender to start at second base heading into the season.

Zac Carter, one of the top recruits in the freshman class, is in contention for a starting spot either at first or second. Colt Johnson, who spent most of last year at third base, is moving across the diamond this season and will compete for playing time along with Colby Wilson and Bran- don Cogan, the Miners’ leading hitter last season.

Cogan finished last season with a .351 batting average and drove in 13 runs, while also pitching well for the Miners to earn all-conference hon- ors in his freshman season as a utility player. Wilson, who out last season due to an injury, brings another good bat to the lineup as he was the Miners’ top hitter in his freshman season.

Cogan and Wilson will be among the leading contenders for the Miners’ spot in the lineup.

Yaimel Javier-Cury, who became a defensive force behind the plate last season, will head up the catching corps that will include freshman Drew Davenport and Aaron Horner.

The Miner pitching staff will have a new look this spring, with only one returning starter projected among the five potential starters. Matt Campbell, who tied a S&T -season record last season with his six victories and 2.17 average, will lead the group that includes two relievers from last season and two newcomers to the roster.

The returners are Andrew Page, who was a middle reliever in 2007 and Brian Rickert, who was the Miner a year ago who recorded four saves. The newcomers are junior college transfer David Birkby, who pitched last season at Meramec Community College and Caleb Smith, a freshman from Calgary, Alberta.

There are plenty of newcomers in the relief corps as well with Jordan Buck, Kyle Griffin, Alex Dunn, Matt Lange, Mark Lupkey and Danny Tren- ner all competing for roles.
