PRESIDENTS REPORT

The 2006/2007 has been a tremendous success for the club on and off the field. Seniors, third grade and the second and third grade ladies won their competitions. Not only did the seniors convincingly win the CCA/CSCA two day competition, but also qualified for a home one day final. The clubs other teams all preformed to a very high standard enabling the club for the first time in 40 years to regain the Peterson Shield. For the first time in a number of seasons Sydenham players were selected to play for the Canterbury Wizards, and I congratulate Craig Ross and Sunnie Chan on their selection.

I would like to make special mention this year of the hard and effective work of the club committee. The committee this year, chaired by Ivan Thomson, has managed the playing facilities, pavilion and finances of the club in a most professional manner. With assistance from Darren Hickson (club captain), Catrene Romano, Rob Kelly (social committee), Chad Romano, James Mckenzie (secretary) and all the others who attended meetings and helped out with various tasks, the committee can be very proud of a job well done. Our club coach, Mike Shrimpton, also made a major contribution to the Club and was a key factor in our success.

A special mention however must go to firstly Ivan, for his diligent collection of subs and the long hours he committed to the smooth running of seniors and second grade. He has also this year stood on the CCA club review committee, and it should be recognised that the work that Ivan and his colleagues have done was of a standard that was compelling enough to convince the board of Canterbury Cricket to revert back to an eight team senior competition. Ivan has also learnt from his experiences not to bet kegs of beer on individuals playing out of their grade and beating the top run scorer on the honours board as next time the President wont bail him out!

I would also like to draw the clubs attention to the contributions made this year by Darren Hickson. Darren has worked hard and effectively in his role as club captain and has proved himself to be a reliable and efficient organiser with an ability to get things done. This is clearly illustrated by the manner in which Darren, together with Mike shrimpton, organised the painting and clean up of the clubrooms prior to the one day finale. He also captained our third grade team which won their competition. Darrens efforts can sometimes go unnoticed as he has a habit of just doing things without making a song and a dance, but this is a fitting occasion to thank him and let him know that he is appreciated.

The committee would also like to recognise the achievements of the Trust. As always the club has a ravenous appetite for cash and once again the trust has come to the fore and raised funding for all our requests. On top of this the new training facilities have been completed and as a club we can now offer to our members the best all weather facility in . At the time of writing the Trust is raising money for a machine and video equipment, of which we hope will be available at the start of the season.

The committee also takes great pleasure in reporting to the club a most satisfactory financial result for the year. At the time of writing our club accounts are due to be audited and it is the committee hope that the audit results will be available as a supplement to this report.

The committee would like to thank Catrene Romano for her studious bookkeeping and attention to detail. Catrene has for the last two years taken responsibility for the food and beverage sales and in particular the bar takings. She has kept the committee regularly informed, regarding receivables and expenses as well as taking an active role in the collection of subs. Catrene's lunches are now famous amongst the Christchurch cricket fraternity, and I am sure that our seniors have picked up the odd lb decision from a CCA umpire, on the strength of a Catrene Romano chicken and salad roll.

The next large project for the club is the renovation of the clubrooms. During the season, Dick Sainsbury, in conjunction with hockey and myself, have held an informal meeting with Sydenham Rugby as to their possible interest in relocating to Sydenham Park and joining cricket and hockey in fundraising for the purposes of renovating the clubrooms. Rugby has indicated to us that they are interested in investigating this option further. It is my hope that at this AGM our members can discuss this issue and give the incoming committee some authority as to which direction to proceed.

Finally I would like to thank all our members and sponsors for the contributions you have made to the club on and off the field. We have all enjoyed once again each other’s company and the fine spirit, which is the Sydenham cricket club.

Michael Pearcy President

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

This will be my last report as club captain and I listen to the sobs of tears and feel the heaviness of people’s hearts I can tell you care, not in the same way as a parent cares more in the way a politician cares. But still with tears swelling in my own eyes I solider on.

Firstly let me congratulate the club on winning the Peterson Shield. This is perhaps the most sought after trophy the CCA gives out. Given to the club with the best winning results in grades over the entire club (sounds less confusing if you say it 5 times really fast ………….. help?) oh well. If you haven’t heard of this trophy it’s because Sydenham haven’t had it for some 51 years. That makes me the most successful club captain of not only the last half of a century but also the only one to win it this millennium. Looks good on my C.V that does. Helps when you’re trying to pull the ladies as well.

So at the height of my career I’m packing it in, moving on to greener pastures, giving the challenge to someone else, handing over the mantle, running out of clichés. Please at the next AGM don’t lets all fight for the position, with all the power, the money, the girls that come with the job. It’s the most popular position after being on the FIFA executive.

To all those that have helped of these past few years I salute you and thank you all from the bottom of my large ever-giving heart. You are all a credit to the club and have built this club up to the proud place we have now.

To all the teams I wish you all the best for the up coming season and remind you that the club is what you put into it so try the quiz nights or the bus trips who knows you might have fun (or even get lucky !!)

All the best Darren Hickson (ret.)

WOMEN’S CLUB CAPTAIN REPORT

This year was an excellent year for the Sydenham women. 2nd Grade won their competition, as did 3 rd Grade who were then controversially threatened of being stripped of the title. Lancaster Park laid a complaint with CCA because in the rulebook the teams were to be given points for a bye, however, no teams were. Both days of the Sydenham bye were rained out so we didn’t get any points and th ose byes were enough for Lancaster Park to beat us. The good news is that this happened after the CCA prize giving so our name was on the trophy! This could be disappointing for the girls if they lose the title through no fault of their own. 1st Grade as it’s now known also had a good season finishing in 2nd place.

We added a team to the ranks this year at the junior level, and we now have two teams in junior competition. Thank you to Lara Thompson and Lindsay Knight for coaching those sides.

Our second place finish in 1st Grade entitles us to a place in the Premiere Grade. We are hoping to build on our success and put together a senior side and re-enter the senior competition after an eleven -year absence.

A big thanks to everyone that helped us over the season, especially Kevin McGowan, Andrew Chisnall and Ian Hill.

Best of luck for the upcoming season.

Greer Hill Women’s Club Captain

OBITUARIES

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements.

COMMUNITY CRICKET REPORT

Sydenham remains the envy of all other Clubs in Christchurch. Other than LPW, Sydenham is the only Club in Christchurch where boys can start in one team and progress with it all the way through to adult cricket. Sydenham als o provides this pathway for the girls. The relationship with Selwyn House, set up by Kevin McGowan 5 years ago, provides an excellent ‘nursery’ of girl cricketers. Some Clubs will find the new requirements for Premier Club status extremely taxing, however Sydenham will welcome the initiative as it has it’s ‘house in order’.

During the season I ran some Kiwi Coaching Clinics at Beckenham Park. A number of Sydenham coaches also attended the official courses run through Canterbury Cricket. The courses for the upcoming season are attached. I really encourage as many coaches as possible to take up the opportunity of up -skilling themselves at a course.

I attended junior team practices through the season and provided advice to the coaches when required. Quite a bit of my time was dedicated to the Sydenham Second Grade adult men’s team. The team finished fourth out of eleven teams in the grade. The average age of the players was 19 so the players certainly have many good years ahead of them.

Cashmere and Hillmorton continued their involvement in the Secondary Schools Super 8 competition. This last season Cashmere entered a record 4 senior teams and 2 junior teams. I ran a leadership course at Cashmere and also attended their Sports Registration at the sta rt of the year.

I’d like to thank all those parents who gave up their time to coach this last season. I will be available again next season to provide assistance to coaches. In closing I’d like to thank Ivan Thomson for his support and I’d like to wish all coaches and players every success in the season ahead.

SENIOR MEN TEAM REPORT

It shaped up to be an interesting season with the Senior team having been relegated from the Two day CCA Competition but still playing in the CCA One day competition.

The team and even the Club could have folded under these circumstances, but instead we attracted a top quality coach in Mike Shrimpton who was probably the difference between sinking and floating!

Mike managed to recruit numerous top quality players, including Sean Heather, Ben Orton, Armand Sing, and with the inclusion of Nigel Collins, Sunnie Chan, Chris Small and Eric Szwarczynski we had a very potent squad.

The two day competition started well and continued in that fashion throughout the season with the team making a clean sweep of the season and taking home the CSCA Two day trophy.

The CCA One day competition was a big goal of mine, but not high on the Club’s agenda, but the team did extraordinarily well by qualifying first in the round robin and making the One day final, only to be beaten by East Shirley’s star studded lineup. A great effort by the boys and a huge boost for the Club.

A big thank you must go to Mike Shrimpton who is slowly turning the senior side around into a formidable unit, and I think all the guys will agree that we learnt so much off him this year, which helped our cricket immensely.

Highlights of the year for the team would be making the One day final and winning the Two day competition. Good performances were numerous this year with everyone enjoying some good form at some stage of the season.

Special congratulations must go to Craig Ross and Sunnie Chan who made the Canterbury Wizards, Mike Jones and Chris Small who made the Canterbury Emerging Players and Canterbury Under 19 respectively.

The Senior squad now has a good base to build on for the upcoming season, and hopefully some good results will be forthcoming.

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

We had a good season over all finishing 4th in the 2 day competition but missing out in the one day competition.

We were able to completely dominate some teams and picked up some good outright wins. Due to the tight nature of the competition we were willing to set enticing targets for our opposition in an attempt to get results. Unfortunately weren’t able to consistently perform well and mixed the brilliant with some woeful innings.

Highlights of the season included: · Nigel Collins hitting a mammoth 261 · Leo Georgiadis hitting a quick 125 to try and get to Ryan Burnetts wedding on time (he missed the ceremony) · Tim Bloomfield (apparently a bowler) hitting 104* in a one dayer and earning a place in seniors on the back of consistent run scoring at the start of the season · Hadyn Martin taking ten in a 2 day match · Chris Ferguson taking 6 wickets in a one dayer which included 4 wickets in 4 balls. · Nick Tuelon smashing 45 batting at No.10 · Dave Rees getting a bowl, and wickets!

One Dayers We had convincing wins over Burnside and LPW but fe ll against the eventual winners OBCC A in our pool. Due to the structure of the 2nd grade competition we could not advance any further after the loss and experimented (and lost) to the lowly East Shirley Budgies.

The batting was led by Bloomfield, Larter and Yesberg with some good consistent knocks. Tuelon, Chivers, Martin, Larter, Ferguson and Yesberg shared the bulk of the bowling and the wickets.

Two Dayers We started with a rain affected game against Riccarton where both teams declared their 1st innings at 0/0. We set them a target of 237 from 39 overs thanks to knocks of 78 (Larter) & 62 (Bloomfield). In a tight finish we rolled them for 141 with 3 overs to spare thanks to the bowling of Chivers, Tuelon & Yesberg.

Our game against OBC B featured good knocks from Coleman & Bloomfield but unfortunately our bowlers were unable to dominate allowing their last 3 batters to score 107 runs and take 1st innings. Taking a gamble in the 2nd innings we set them 128 from 34 overs which they managed to overhaul w ith 3 overs to spare giving them the outright win.

After being 48/6 against OBC A we managed to get through to 144 after a fine knock by Taylor. They responded with 288/4 leaving us to bat most of the 2nd day to reach 268/10 and gain a draw.

Next up was LPW and after a team effort with the bat led by Georgiadis (50) we set them 202. Excellent bowling from Tuelon (5-41) and Martin (4 -31) saw them all out for 114. Quick runs from Georgiadis (41), Coleman (31) and Yesberg (32) saw us set them a target of 236 from 56 overs. Thanks to 5-51 from Yesberg we rolled them 97 runs short for 139 giving us a convincing win.

Against Southern Districts we mixed the woeful with the sublime. Rolling us for 77 they then scored 281 leaving us to bat out the 2nd day to avoid defeat. This we did in style amassing 465/9 before the game was called off as a draw. In a partnership with Larter (63) of 287, Collins scored 224, going on to score 261 (23x4 16x6).

We rolled Marist for 97 with Martin taking 5-39. Thanks to a rapid 125 from Georgiadis (22x4 2x6) and 51 from Prime we replied with 269/6. Martin picked up 5-28 and a ten bag with support from Larter (4-49) as we rolled Marist for 176 and won the match.

In a tight game against ES A they were rolled for 241 (Tuelon 4-61) in reply to our 263/9 (Yesberg 70, Chan 36). Rees & Yesberg led the scoring with 44 each as we set them an improbable 214from 22 overs. However feeding them runs (Rees & Prime) we were unlucky not to only get a draw as we had them 169/9 at the end.

Thanks to a fighting 56 from Optimus and 45 from Tuelon we clawed back from 17/5 to score 176 in our 1st innings against Burnside. They responded with 278/9 with the spin of Ganda (3-54) & Chan (3-51) leading the bowlers. Thanks to a quick 119 from Chan we were able to gamble and set them 122 off 28 overs. 5-63 from Ganda took us close but Burnside secured a win 8 down in the last over.

Against ES B we dominated the whole game setting 198 thanks to a knock of 69 from Collins. We rolled the budgies for 148 with excellent bowling from Percaski (2-38), Chan (4 -33) and Yesberg (3 -23). Quick knocks from Collins (42) and Prime (49) allowed us to set 201. Ganda produced spell of 5-16 off 5 overs to quickly dispose of the woeful ES Band give us the win. However the CCA upheld a ridiculous ES B complaint and docked us all points on a technicality.

Despite the sour note to the previous game we finished the season on a morale boosting high beating St Albans outright. Chivers (4-23) & Cooper (4 -13) bowled well to roll Saints for 98. In reply we got 1st innings but only by 7 runs. We struggled in the 2nd innings to take wickets until Tuelon took 4-0 off 4 overs. Left 215 to win we took our time and thanks to knocks from Coleman (66) & Meeks (32) finished the season with a strong win.

Overall we had a successful season. However due to inconsistent performances and the inability to finish off lower orders we let a lot of winning situations get away from us. There were a number of excellent individual performances but overall it was valuable contributions from all players that led to us being in contention to win the grade right till the end.

Special thanks must go to Marshy for his guidance and Toddy for his hard work in preparing the grounds during the season.

Cheers Ben Larter Captain

SYDENHAM PREDATORS 3RD GRADE TEAM REPORT

A very formidable team on paper, compared by some to the South Sydney rabbitohs. With expectations high we entered the fray and faced Lancaster park in a rain shortened 2 day game that was turned into a 1 day game for 2 day points but not full 2 day points only as many points as a 1 dayer was worth, but didn't count in the 1 day competition as it was a 2 day game ove r 1 day ***.?!?!?

So as you can see a great start. But we won anyway and they cried. Apparently it was the first time they have lost a 2 day game in 3 years (even though it was a 1 day 2 day game) but it wouldn't be the last 2-day game they would lose (a lthough it was the only 1 day 2 day game)

Anyway I digress well it was onwards and upwards from there sweeping all before us in not only 2 day games but also 1 day games and the odd 1 day 2 day game when the rain came.

Highlights for us a team was of course winning the 2 day grade (we would have won the 1 day 2 day grade if points from the 2 day games played over only 1 day were counted separately). Low point probably losing the 1 day final after beating St Albans twice along the way and making them cry (and man can they cry. I felt the same way a preschool teacher must feel when the kids find out blues clues isn't on) made up for the disappointment a little bit.

Individual highlights within the team (and unless I find the book you will just have to take my word for these)

1. Tim "Crazy Feet" "P" Hansen with lots of wickets (46 I think) 2. All the ring ins we had. Every week we seem to have a ring in and they would always score runs or take wickets to get us out of a hole. Other than Tim (who won the team player of the year, and not because his sister is hot according to coops) the whole team just are pulled together when it was necessary to get the job done.

So I look forward to this year and new challenges that lay waiting and look forward to the same bunch of misfits coming back again to defend our crown and try to win the 1 day title as well (cause we are greedy and we want it all) So to scooter, nos, ring-in, monty, crazy, gihad, einstein, ghandi, token, macca and aztec I say thanks and look forward to playing with you all this upcoming season (bugger I sound like Michael Jackson) remember boys early season fitness training starts soon!!!!!

3RD GRADE BLUE TEAM REPORT

The Sydenham 3rd grade blue side was a team made up of players from last years 3rd grade black side which played in the schools second eleven competition. It consisted of a group of talented 17 year olds and a couple of older geriatrics. Unfortunately a number of defections left the side short on numbers before the season started and with injuries and the inevitable unavailabilities we were quite often down to ten players. Some players also made the step up to second grade and this further depleted our ranks. However, despite this we were competitive in most games in both the two day and one day competitions.

In the one day competition we finished in the top half of the competition and up until our last game had a chance of playing in the final. In the two dayers in nearly every game we had a chance to grab outright points but couldn’t finish the job. After a good start we eventually slipped down the table to finish in the middle.

Some good performances were produced by several players. Brad Hill’s 29 wickets at 21 and 236 runs was a ‘player of the year performance’. Matt Meek had three fifties as an opener and 256 runs while Joseph Taylor and Johnny Percaski had some very good moments before moving up to second grade. A special mention must also be made of Brad and Dean Sumner. Travelling down from Kaikoura each weekend is in itself a great effort but they were both consistent performers and there reliability was much appreciated. Special thanks must also go to my fellow ‘oldie’, Merv Taylor. Our partnership against East Shirley was a particular highlight for me.

So while not as successful as it could have been I am hopeful that some good lessons were learned. As with most sports you only get results if you put the effort in. I have had a lot of laughs while coaching many of these guys over the years and I thank them for their great attitude and wish them all the best in the future. Have fun.

SYDENHAM GOATS SUBURBAN 3C GRADE TEAM REPORT

Played 20 Won 13 Tied 1 Lost 6

WE WON!!!! Well we finished 1st equal and in 20 years at the club it’s the first time that I have been involved in a winning team. The core of last year’s team who finished second returned but with only three teams back from the previous year we were not sure what we would be up against. A good start to the season saw us in second place at the Christmas break with only a tie in the last game keeping us out of first. After the break we performed well and with 5 weeks to go we had a three game lead over the chasing pack. Unfortunately we then lost 3 of the last 4, including 2 losses to Halswell, our closest rivals, meant we were tied going into the last game. Hornby was beaten in the last game so after a few jitters we tied up the competition.

Compared with last year both our batting and bowling figures across the side were not as impressive. Batting was not helped by some dodgy pitches but often we would get into good positions with 10 overs to go and lose 5 or 6 quick wickets and then struggle to bat out our overs. We had a good varied bowling attack but sometimes lacked the penetration to get the vital wickets.

Another good social year with after game beers and BBQ’s, cocktail parties and trips to watch NZ demolish Australia in an ODI. We were also the best-dressed team in the grade in our new uniforms.

Jon Bennett Steady year with the bat including a century in a losing chase. Came good with a couple of 70s in the last 4 games but down a couple of hundred runs on last year’s tally.

Jonno Campbell Jonno didn’t bowl a lot of overs this year although he missed half the season. He struggled for bowling consistency but when he was on the ball he bowled with good pace. One of his best spells was against Hornby when he didn’t get a wicket but bowled with great pace and consistency and tied up one end.

Shane Bourke A new player to the club after many years away from cricket. Improved consistently through the season especially in his batting where he hit two aggressive 50s including a 33 ball 61 against Hornby which included 5 sixes. Excellent fielder especially in the outfield.

Stacey Garrett Bowled the biggest number of overs this year and equal top wicket taker. When he was on his game his out swing was both hard to score off and a constant wicket taking threat. A sound fielder with a great arm. Stacey also had his best year with the bat for a long time with some vital innings mid year.

Rob Graves Another new player. Rob originally was going to play part time but he got the cricket bug and bought far too much new gear for that. Batting at the top of the innings Rob was usually good getting to 16 but only passed that score twice. He got to his top score on an awful pitch and should have got his first 50. We are still waiting for him to secure one of air NZs planes for a bit of transport sponsorship.

Phil Gray At the start of the season Phil’s bowling was untouchable and in 7 games had figures of 49 overs 23 maidens 11 for 77. However one bad game later and Phil’s confidence seemed to be shaken and while he didn’t bowl badly for the rest of the season he failed to recapture that dominant form. When batting he needs to learn that it is easier to get the ball to the boundary with his bat rather than his face.

Richard McKernan Another good all round year for Richard with the most runs, most catches and 15 wickets at an average of 13. While he didn’t score a hundred this year he got 6 50s, 5 after Christmas and throughout the season he had a strike rate of 106. Richard was deserved winner of our player of the year.

Ollie Needham Ollie looked good batting all year at the top of the order but couldn’t get the big scores he needed to make a real good season. His wicket keeping was always off a good standard and he was always a positive influence on the side. Needs to have more confidence in his own batting ability.

Bede Oulaghan Bede our off spinner didn’t get much bowling as he should have this year on the back off too many medium pacers in the side and a lot of pitches which suited quicker bowling. When he did get the opportunity he always picked up wickets. Took a couple of outstanding catches at slip or gully.

Jason Robinson Jason should be a good all-rounder in this grade and while he had a great year bowling his medium pacers his batting didn’t reflect his ability. Patience is the key. A great start to the year with figures 6-13 in a game we should have lost.

Lionel Schulte The veteran (old man) of the team Lionel spent the first part of the year opening the batting with consistent success including a patient match winning 53 in th e third game. When we introduced special guest openers after Christmas he did a bit more bowling. Got a bit of flack from some quarters about strike rate but sometimes its how many not how quickly.

Simon Vincent Chief ringer Simon was always there to help out when we were short. A couple of important innings when we were in a bit of trouble. Knew when to turn up for after match beers even when he wasn’t playing.

SYDENHAM CARDINALS 5TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

Anticipation was rife for the first game of the season, arriving at Hagley Park nice and early for the first game were 11 tentative men ready to put it all on the line with the hope of becoming one of 5th grade cricket's immortals. Little did we know at this stage that to be mentioned of with the same regard as Butts, "Kris with a K" and Chewie was not so much an honour but a bloody disgrace!

We had a lot to learn and the Parklands boys showed us very early on that the Sydenham 5th Grade Cardinals did not have an easy ride ahead of them. After a tumultuous start to the season with our Captain Chris giving our opening batsman Brett out for a duck with out hitting the ball in the very first over, we knew things wouldn't be easy. Funnily enough our start to our innings never really improved with at least five or six instances of the Cardinals being one or two down by the end of the first over and at least two occasions where our opening batsman was out to the first ball of the innings! However the Cardinals battled through and ended the first innings of 5th Grade cricket 5 wickets down with 260 runs on the board, at least 2 half centuries and one 49*. A promising start!

Things changed that first game when we came out to bowl with Parklands easily knocking off our total with the help of a fine performance from their captain. This was not the last time he would single handedly destroy us - being an ex Canterbury rep I am sure had nothing to do with it!! I can't remember much from our bowling performance except for the ball flying back over my head and all around the park and some extremely average fielding which saw at least 10, yes 10, dropped catches!!! All up the first game was one to remember; we had fun, were reasonably competitive, had some bloody good and some bloody awful individual performances but in the end lost a close game. It definitely set the scene for the season to come. Player of the day would be Henry - tight bowling, excellent batting and wearing a blazer to the first game. Well done old Chap!!

St Albans were next - What a bunch of tossers - honestly they couldn't have moaned more. This match provided one of the best calls ever heard at a cricket match, after we tried to play our super sub Moe - "Come on Guys this is 5th Grade Cricket" - thanks "Kris with a K", you really showed what a cricketing nerd you really are. Anyway we were thrashed thanks to a dodgy pitch that miraculously dried out once the Westpac rescue helicopter landed on it. Player of the day - Jezza and Jamie - Good innings and "Kris with a K" and Chewie their rotund Captain for introducing us to the dark side of 5th grade cricket.

Lancaster Park Woolston was next in the fray, a serious bunch with an awful attitude between all of them. This match produced one of the biggest shots I have ever seen; unfortunately it was one of their batsmen putting poor Andrew over his head and over the pavilion at Woolston Park into some person's back yard!

Nothing much of note happened until our fifth game when we finally got our first win after losing to some completely useless teams such as Marist Green and Burnside who we would later consistently thrash. Our win came against OBC, who were completely pants. Their guys managing to injure themselves which included one guy called Optimus who managed to roll himself over onto the ball whilst fielding damaging his hairy beanbags, and a famous piece of fielding on the boundary that involved the fielder using his calf to stop an easy catch! Needless to say the drink flowed that night!

The clown suit made an appearance shortly after the mid year break and performances improved as a result - with the exception of one man - our walking clown Chow. Chow had the huge distinction of winning the Clown suit on at least 3 of the 6 or 7 occasions it was made available and kindly ensured it was in tip top condition for Krefty after our end of year court session. So well done Chow for your wonderfully entertaining efforts through out the year, you have been a constant source of inspiration!

After that famous firs t win the Cardinals caught the craze and began to consistently perform well winning as many as we lost, in the end we bet every team in our grade at least once except for the Parklands Boys and the Marist Fozzie Bears (rained out twice)

6TH GRADE BLUE TEAM REPORT

The season had a bit if a slow start, having 5 players from last year leave was a bit difficult, especially when last year we often only had 8 players… including those 5. But with a bit of wandering around and help from Ivan Thomson we managed to claw together a full team. Turns out we did pretty well, lost a few games at the start but then had a bit of a winning spree and everyone was contributing. In social grades you tend to have a couple of paraplegic bunnies, (it’s a social grade for god’s sake) however this year guys who had barely scored above 20 were scoring 50’s and really pulling their weight and supporting the top order batters. We never were a team to care about results in the past, but the attitude was a bit more serious this year, and we did well because of and finished second. Probably the most enjoyable season I’ve played for a long while, and looking forward to next season.

SYDENHAM CARDINALS PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

The turnaround from failing to make the Christmas cut the previous year, to finishing second equal this year, could probably be put down to three factors…a greater determination to have a real crack at winning the competition, and doing what it took to achieve that, and then in no particular order, Kevin Moore, Stu Simpson and Ken Julian. The involvement of the latter three in the team this year not only added value in their own individual performances, but in how it raised and complemented the performances of others around them. Julien Van Dyke, who has always been a very strong performer for the side, grew another leg with Stu as his opening partner. Likewise Mike Dolden benefited hugely from Ken Julian’s support at the other end. Kev Moore gave Doldy a soul mate in the competitive stakes

There was little question that we were the strongest of the bowling unit in the competition this year and that was acknowledged by other sides. Whilst all the teams contained some useful players, most had a weaker bowler or two that let them down at some stage of the innings. And although the other top three sides, like us, didn’t have that problem, they never had the same balanced attack. Inevitably if our medium pacers didn’t win the game for us, the spinners did – it was strange that they rarely shared the spoils, one or the other seeming to do the job each week, almost alternatively.

Such was the success of the bowlers that the opposition rarely forced us to change our bowling patterns or our favoured 6:3 ring field for the medium pacers. The opening attack of Stu Simpson and Julien Van Dyke was never bettered, and either achieved the required break through early on, or stifled the ran rate such that when the spinners came on they had the batsman under real pressure. They shared almost identical performance stats with Stu at times seeming little changed from his senior’s days and was always a handful for any batsmen. Julien was Mr Reliable – arguably the pick of the bowlers and the highest wicket taker, always miserly and regularly chipping out batsmen. A new refined and slimmed down Mike Dolden (minus the 15kgs and a moustache) had a very solid year and remains our most ferociously competitive player alongside Kev Moore. Ken Ju lian played fewer games than most and had a modest haul of wickets, but this was largely because teams always saw him as a danger and tended to just try to bat him out – consequently his RPO was the equal best in the team and often created wickets for others. He finished high in the batting averages and effected some outstanding run-outs in the field. Jim Boyd spent most of the season injured, and then when he returned, later elected to play for the Hospital boys to get a few more opportunities

Whilst the good balance of the bowling unit was our strength, it unfortunately did not quite extend into our batting and cost us in the bigger games. Ewan Spence’s decision to stick with harriers this year and only play the occasional game for us was a real loss. In a team full of stroke makers, who were sometimes reluctant to put away the strokes and battle it out in times of strife, Spency was probably the missing link in his ability to see out those times and then stroke it round with the best of them when the situation warranted it – whilst his few performances for the side were invaluable, there just weren’t enough of them.

That said, there can be no excuses as we were still one of the better batting sides, often with guys capable of scoring 50’s batting all the way down to No. 9 or 10 – something that didn’t extend much past about No. 4 at times the previous season. However, we failed spectacularly to front in a couple of the big games, most notably the two games against league champions Easts Gold, and that was the difference between finishing second rather than first. East’s are a good side, experienced in winning and showed more grit when it really counted. Both teams had got off to poor starts in both of their innings against each other, but the East’s middle order turned the game around for them, something that we could not match. East’s were worthy winners of the competition and continue to set the standard - but they are a target now well within our reach

Kev Moore was the pick of the batsmen early on until work commitments affected his availability after January – whilst his batting talents and ability to hit the ball hard considerably boosted the side, it was his competitive nature that probably contributed the most – Kev just plain doesn’t like losing. He came close to topping the averages and was a constant source of encouragement for the bowlers and others in the field. He was also our “Craig McMillan”, coming on in the middle overs to expend a bit of energy and so often claiming vital wickets.

Sean Hobson became an all rounder this year and took out the Player of the Year Award – his contribution with the bat in the middle order undoubtedly gave us more strength in that department of our game, but it was his bowling that at times contributed more to winning games. His left arm “chinamans” proved very affective on some types of wickets where others were failing to extract much. Mark Paget also had a solid year, hit the ball with a lot of power, and often hung in there to get us back on target when things got tough. Wayne Pluck just grew as the season wore on – originally not available except for the occasional game, Plucky then started playing regularly and his performances rose with it. He was another who was a good contributor in the middle order and his wicket keeping improved with each game and fitness. Tony Danenburg did not spend as much time at the crease as he would have liked and at times struggled to adapt to pacing the game in the middle order. However, his innings of 32* in the important return match against Saints went along way towards winning us that game.

Gary Gardiner filled in for in one game, immediately fitted in as a long-time ex-Sydenham player, and we were just plain keen not to let him go from that point on – Gard’s has always impressed as an intelligent player who well understands whats required of him at the various stages of the game. He played some excellent innings in the few games he had for us, and his bowling added yet another dimension to our wealth of spin options. Bill Nicholson was another who filled in occasionally and always gave his best – always reliable with the bat, he also gave us a left arm medium pace option at times when we needed it. Mike Percy only played a handful of games because of an injury before Christmas and never got sufficient opportunities to feature.

The life-blood of any team is its ability to pull guys into the team when short – a number of people put themselves out to do so over the season, and I thank Ivan Thompson and Darren Hickson for their assistance in trying to find players at short notice. But none more so than Paul McKenzie - although not in the original squad, Maca was always happy to fill in any role given to him without demand or favour. He provided 90% of the off-field entertainment, especially in reporting back on his nocturnal activities, and was always a pleasure to play with. Paul’s obvious delight in scoring his 41* against BWU in the penultimate game was shared by all the team

The other improvement over the year were the social aspects with most players always making the effort to stay for beer after the game – an enjoyable time where even the slightest flaw in a player’s performance was gleefully chastised and derided. That spirit was also reflected in the excellent turnout for the end of season team dinner.

The only sad part to the season was when Tom White finally succumbed to yet another injury and retired at Christmas – in the innings that he did play, Tom proved that he is still very capable both with the bat and as an outstanding slips fielder. He has been a great servant of the Sydenham Club and was greatly missed in the latter part of the season.

So that’s this season, but there’s always the next – Doldy and I look forward to seeing you all in the gym over the winter on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday – yeah right !

HOSPITAL PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

An enjoyable season thanks to Jonny Smart’s captaincy and commitment to team spirit and participation. The team underperformed, however. Several key players were only occasionally available and the losses of Bernard Fanning and Chris Spencer really took their toll. The match that really set the tone for the season was the fourth against HSOB. We made a modest score but had them against the ropes only to let their last wicket partnership get 25 runs and deny us the victory. For the rest of the season we lacked faith in ourselves to clinch the tight games. On three occasions we failed to chase modest targets and it has to be said that this occurred because nobody took responsibility to ensure that the job was done. It’s all very well to go out in a blaze of glory but the runs still have to be scored. In a modest chase someone in the upper order has to take responsibility and bat through to the end. I would rather take 40 overs to score 130 and win, than to be all out in the 25th. The high point of the season was the win against Riccarton. I hope we can savour more of these.

The batting was lead by Nick Robinson who scored the only century and four other fifties . His bowling and fielding were of a high standard and he well deserves to be our player of the season and to be selected for the Presidents Grade Rep team. Unfortunately bad weather prevented this fixture being played. Richard Laing, Russell Gear, Gareth Milne, Adrian Balasingam and Nick Childs all had good performances. Tristan Pettit, our most improved player, looked very assured on occasions and Charitha Fernando’s fifty was greatly enjoyed. Jonny Smart revealed his talent with the bat and we look forward to more in the coming season. Prasanna batted well at times but we hope he spends some time on practising running between the wickets! We do need more batting depth overall.

We always seemed to be one bowler short. Tristan Pettit bowled very well and Nick Childs was always threatening. The losses of Jonny Smart and Chris Spencer after November were crucial – one look at their statistics confirms this. Nick Robinson, John Scarlett, Chris Warren, Gareth Milne and Prasanna all had useful spells. Charitha Fernando is a wicket-taking bowler but needs to be employed before the slog is really on.

We fielded well. At this level one accepts the odd lapse but there were some high points – witness Gareth Milne’s catch to dismiss Wayne Pluck, John Scarlett to dismiss Chris Flannagan and Jonny Smart against East Shirley Gold, to name but three. We were well served in the wicket-keeping department by Dave Jardine and Alistair Hepburn. They took the majority of catching chances and stumping chances on offer. Both have the requisite sense of humour.

As always I look forward to the coming season.

This year the first reserve team was a very new look team with many new faces to the grade as well as the club. All team members played extremely well throughout the season, usually steady bowling came from all bowlers and each member contributed with the bat, from opener’s right down to number eleven. Fielding was taken to with lots of energy and talk reflecting tightness of the team.

The team finished up coming a close second to Saint Albans blue, after two narrow losses in the two day competition of 3 and 11 runs made it hard to catch them, despite a courageous effort in the one day competition. The season came down to one game against the Saints side in which in the second innings our batting line up collapsed, although tail enders K. McBride and L. Thompson but on a stylish display.

Throughout the season we required some of the lower grades players to help us out and each made the step up look easy. Congratulations to L. Knight for making the Canterbury development squad, E. Aukuso, K, McBride, E. Beasely, R. Winter, and S. Reremasi for making the Canterbury under 17 side. A big thank you goes to K. McGowan for his much apprecia ted coaching and guidance, A. WOMEN’S SECOND GRADE TEAM REPORT

The 2005/ 2006 season was a successful one for the 2nd grade women’s team, having won our grade.

Having Norma, Amber and myself back from previous seasons this gave us experience in the batting and bowling department, so we basically had a new team!!! With Janelle signing up to play for Syds this year we also managed to get her sister Mel and sister in law Anna as permanent members. After a few years away from playing for Sydenham Jackie also came back to play as well. Jayne who also played a few years ago at another club also became a permanent player. We had a number of fill ins as well (cherry, Gail, Fran, etc etc) who all helped to win us the trophy!!

There was a great atmosphere in the team this year with family members and partners all coming down to watch us play. We also managed to gain new mascots with Normas dog running around and Annas son Jake making guest appearances as well.

We are all looking forward to the challenges of next season, with the base of us coming back and hoping to have a full eleven every week-which once again has alluded us this season!!!

JUNIOR SECTION

The 2005/06 cricket season proved to be a very good season for the junior club. We fie lded 46 teams again this season which is similar to that of previous years with our numbers remaining steady with good prospects for future seasons with a large contingent of Kiwi (13) and Junior Average (9) teams coming through.

Performance wise the club had an excellent season with our No 1 Senior Traditional 2 day team (yr 7-8 players) coached by Gary Gardner winning their competition. This is a major success and no mean feat as it is the premier competition for primary /intermediate players in Christchurch where most of the top players compete. Sydenham have won the competition twice in the 3 years it has been running it will also be the last time that this competition will be run due to a CJCA decision to change the format to a one day competition. Sydenham Under 16 coached by Gerald Nation won their grade for the second year going undefeated Both Girls 2nd grade and 3rd grade won their respective competitions

The club was also well represented in Zone tournaments and Christchurch and Canterbury representative competitions with 18 players making underage rep teams 23 players making zone teams of which 10 went on to represent Christchurch in primary schools teams. This is an improvement on last year, which was to date our best year representative wise proving that we are not only one of the largest clubs in Christchurch but also one of the strongest.

Coaching Our coaching program for many years was considered one of the strengths of our club but over the past few seasons has appeared to be in decline. This season through the tireless efforts of one Committee member in particular (John Eggleston), our coaching program has received a major revamp with the employment of three club coaches to provide players with specialist skills clinics at least twice a week every week of the season and team visits to all teams. We feel we have gone along way to raising the bar in club coaching and look forward to refining the process to give us a coaching program that we can all be proud of and one that serves the needs of our members. I would like to congratulate the efforts of our coaching staff Kevin McGowan, Chris Ferguson and Eric Szwarczynski all of whom did an excellent job.

Facilities Practice and playing facilities continue to be a problem for a club this size we look forward to the completion and utilization of the new practice facilities at Sydenham Park and congratulate the trust in their work in providing the Sydenham Cricket Club with a practice facility of this standard. The junior club has also underta ken work in upgrading practice facilities having assisted Cashmere Primary school in upgrading their nets and with the laying of new bowlers run ups at Cashmere high nets and the relaying of one lanes mats which were vandalised. The club still has an artificial wicket at Sydenham Park that has been unused for the last 2 seasons at this stage it's future is undecided.

Committee For many years now the junior club has been fortunate to have a strong dedicated team working on it's committee this has ensured the success of the club by providing the organisational back up required to make it run smoothly. Unfortunately this year we see the retirement of several members, including myself, but I am confident the that with such a large membership pool to draw from that we will be able to find people with the dedication and calibre required to join the returning committee members and build on the successes of past years

Special thank you To all of the clubs volunteer coaches and team managers without whom we just couldn't operate To the committee for their tireless efforts in providing the support to enable us to perform on field To the players for giving it their all and making us proud To the supporters / parents who came and supported our teams each week

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR HAS BEEN THE FUNDING AND THE NEAR COMPLETION OF THE NEW THREE LANE PRACTICE FACILITY ON THE OLD TENNIS COURT AREA.

AS PER THE FIXED ASSETS SCHEDULE IN THE COACHING & GROUNDS ACCOUNTS THE TOTAL COST WAS $85016 GST INCLUSIVE.

THE SYDENHAM HOCKEY CLUBS PERMANENT PLAYING AREA HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THE INSURANCE VALUE OF THE COMPLEX IS $200000. THE COMPLEX IS BEING OFFICIALLY OPENED 11 AM SATURDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2006 BY THE LOCAL MP AND CRICKET MEMBER JIM ANDERTON. AS THE AREA HAS LIGHTING WE WILL BE INVESTIGATING WHETHER IT CAN BE USED AT NIGHT. WE ARE LOOKING AT FUNDING A BOWLING MACHINE CAMERA & VIDEO SET UP. WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE SUPPORT OF THE NZ CRICKET FUNDATION FOR THE NEW FACILITY.

WE ARE INDEBTED FOR THE CONTINUING SUPPORT OF WALLY RADFORD/DIANE RICHARDSON OF THE SANDRIDGE COMPLEX RAY & ANGELA BROWNLEE TUSKERS BECKENHAM RUSSELL McKENZIE, ST MARTINS NEW WORLD AND THE HARRIS FAMILY TRUST.

THE RAFFLE WAS DISSAPOINTING WITH THE RESPONSE FROM SOME SIDES BEING VERY POOR. OUR THANKS TO BILL THOMSON FOR ORGANISING THE RAFFLE WITH HELP FROM BERT WALKER. IN PARTICULAR WE EXPRESS OUR THANKS TO GRAHAM HARRIS WHO ARRANGED THE FIRST PRIZE.

AS ADVISED LAST YEAR CRICKET IS AN EXPENSIVE SPORT TO RUN WITH THE 2005/2006 COSTS BEING IN THE ORDER OF $70000. THE ENSUING SEASONS BUDGET IS IN EXCESS OF $70000. AS RECORDED IN THE ACCOUNTS THE TRUST HAS ALREADY RECEIVED $49692.

AS ADVISED ABOVE WE ARE ARRANGING FUNDING FOR THE BOWLING MACHINE CAMERA AND VIDEO FOR THE COACHING COMMITTEE.

NOW THAT THE PRACTICE FACILTY IS NEARLY COMPLETED THE CLUB IS NOW INVESTIGATING THE CLUBROOMS UPGRADE.

WHEN THE TRUST WAS ESTABLISHED THE AIM WAS TO ACHIEVE A CAPITAL BASE OF $100000. AND THAT THE INTEREST WOULD FUND THE RUNNING OF THE CLUB. HOW THINGS HAVE EXPANDED SINCE THAT DATE.

I EXPRESS MY APPRECIATION FOR THE ONGOING SUPPORT OF THE TRUSTEES WHO ARE DAVID HEARD, MICHAEL PEARCY,RICHIE THOMAS ,BILL THOMSON AND BERT WALKER.

AUDITORS REPORT I have examined the statements of financ ial performance and financial position of the sydenham cricket club trust and have obtained all the information and explanations that i have required. Due to the inherent nature of the trust certain income items such as raffle proceeds and gaming machine grants cannot be verified prior to entry in the records. In my opinion but subject to the foregoing limitation the statements of financial performance and financial position respectively give a true and fair view of the operation of the sydenham cricket club trust as at 30 june 2005 and of the results for the year ended on that date.
