www.GoShorterHawks.com 4 2009-2010 Shorter Hawk Basketball Message from the Director of Athletics

Dear Hawk Family:

It is my great pleasure to welcome in another exciting season of Shorter College basketball.

A year has passed since last season, and our Hawks and Lady Hawks athletic teams have completed what is arguably the best year in the history of Shorter College Athletics. As always, our goal is for Shorter to be recognized as an outstanding option for student-athletes who are looking for academic excellence, spiritual growth, and a challenging athletic experience.

In conjunction with this goal, we have been blessed with the best in both student-athletes and coaches; whether in competition, in the classroom or in the community.

During the past year, thirteen of our teams finished the year in the NAIA Top-25 for their respective sport, and at the conclusion of the year, Shorter placed 33rd in the nation out of nearly 300 NAIA mem- ber schools in the NACDA Director’s Cup.

In addition, we graduated a record number of student-athletes and celebrated our first team national championship. Most importantly, we continued to see great growth among both our coaches and athlet- ics in their Christian walk of faith. Bill Peterson Director of Athletics In just its fourth year, our football program won its first-ever conference championship and earned its first berth into the NAIA National Playoffs. We also saw our highly respected head football coach, Phil Jones, receive the prestigious FCA National Coach of the Year Award.

Women’s basketball player Whitni Tucker was named the national winner of the Emil S. Liston Award, an annual award presented by the NAIA and Daktronics recognizing a male and female junior basketball player based on scholarship, character and playing ability.

Softball standout Becca Thomas garnered the SSAC’s most prestigious honor, the 2008-2009 SSAC Female Honor Student-Athlete of the Year. Along with men’s soccer player Kyle Timberlake, Becca was also honored as one of Shorter’s two Student-Athletes of the Year.

Justyna Mudy won our second individual national championship in the last two years and became the first Lady Hawk to ever win a national championship.

Our student-athletes and coaches continued to shine recording all-time highs in the following areas: 75 graduating seniors, 74 all-academic and all-conference selections, 16 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, six conference championships and one national championship and eight Coach of the Year selections. What a year!

While we are proud of what has accomplished in the 2008-2009 school year, both our coaches and student-athletes are even more excited about what the future may bring.

The growth and accomplishments of the past decade have put this program in position to move into the most successful era ever of Shorter Ath- letics. For that to happen, it will require a great effort on all of our parts as well as a tremendous amount of teamwork. It will also take great faith, unbelievable enthusiasm and a champion’s perseverance. Nonetheless, I am confident it can be done.

We appreciate your continued support and we look forward to another exciting year in 2009-2010.

Go Hawks!

Good Luck Shorter Hawks! Here’s to another successful season!

Dwarf House by Chick-Fil-A® 264 Shorter Avenue Rome, Ga. (706) 232-9233 THIS IS... HAWK HOOPS 10 2009-2010 Shorter Hawk Basketball Revamped Hawks’ roster poised to make noise in SSAC

Shorter faces daunting task of replacing a host of key contributors from last season

CHAD WARNER KNEW what was going to happen when he took over as the head coach of the men’s basketball program at Shorter Col- lege three years ago.

One look at the Hawks’ roster made it clear – the third year of his ten- ure would begin without the services of a huge group of veterans who helped re-establish Shorter as a threat on the court.

Although that time has arrived, one that includes the absence of all five of last year’s starters, the Hawks begin the 2009-10 season with a new look, hoping to achieve the goal to which the program has dedicated itself – becoming a contender.

“When I took this job I felt that in year three we’d be starting over by just looking at the roster and the way the classes were balanced,” said Warner, who saw his Hawks finish the 2008-09 injury-plagued campaign with a 15-16 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Southern States Athletic Conference with a 10-8 mark. “I remember telling [Shorter athletic director Bill Peterson] that year three would be interesting.

The absence of eight members of last year’s team left the Hawks with some major holes to fill in terms of experience, ability and leadership.

Most notable among those lost to graduation is Tomas Pranciliauskas, a two-time All-Conference pick – he garnered NAIA All-American honors in 2008 – who led the team in scoring last year averaging 14.0 points a game.

Also missing from the picture are three players who helped form the backbone of the program: SSAC All-Academic selections Chris Severt TALL ORDER: Senior captain Jamie Walker will not only be counted on and Fred Christopher, and A.J. The loss of numbers is even more telling. “This year we’re smaller and have some size, but we’re more athletic and All told, the Hawks lost their top six scorers from last year’s squad, their we’ll be much faster.” top three rebounders and their top seven assists producers. This year’s team plans to use its quickness and athleticism from one “It’s tough to see those faces leave, ones that you have grown to know baseline to the other, and the Hawks will count on their backcourt to and love,” Warner said. “At the same time it’s exciting to start rebuild- initiate a faster style of play. ing.” Setting it all up is the role of point guard; a position Warner knows is Warner and the Hawks’ coaching staff believe they have come up with the key to it all. the right combination of returners and an influx of transfers who have the ability to hit the hardwood running – literally. “It’s a big, key position that we need to fill,” the coach said.

“In order for us to be competitive early we had to get transfers,” Warner Brodrick Walker, a 5-foot-11 senior from Stone Mountain, returns to said. “Time will tell how this year’s team does as they come together – give Shorter some experience at the point, where he earned SSAC All- how hard we work and how hard the players buy into the system and Academic honors last season. each other. Tim Cleary, a 6-9 junior from Roswell who red-shirted last season, returns bigger and stronger.

Shorter will utilize two more players who, like Wheeler, were at Crich- ton College and have found their way to Shorter.

6-foot-6 junior Marqise Wright who prepped at Johnson High in Gainesville, and 6-5 senior Ziyadah Carter from Columbus could anchor the forward positions for the Hawks.

Completing the post lineup is Jacob Chandler, a 6-4 sophomore from Trion, and Jett Parker, a 6-3 freshman from Gadsden, Ala.

“I really don’t know how good we are or how good we’ll be,” Warner said. “There are so many variables, but we went out to get the best play- ers we could get.”

During the preseason, Warner saw the best come out on and off the court.

“We spend a lot of time in this program developing teamwork and character,” the coach said. “Being a team on the floor and off the floor is a major focus.”

Yet the Hawks know that the bottom line lies between the lines in a conference that includes perennial powerhouses – defending SSAC champion Auburn-Montgomery advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Championships last season – and parity.

“We have to continue to move up in the league,” Warner said. “We have sniffed it the last two years but we haven’t broken through yet. Our goal is to be a national contender. Season: 3rd Season Career Record at Shorter: 34-28 Career SSAC Record: 19-17 Alma Mater: University of Georgia, 1998 Previous Coaching Experience:

Darlington School - 1998-2002 University of Georgia - 2002-2003 Hampden-Sydney College - 2003-2004, 2006-2007 The College of William & Mary - 2004-2006

Rome native Chad Warner returns for his third season as head coach of the Shorter College men’s basketball program. With 34 wins in his first two seasons at the helm, Warner’s Hawks have posted the best consecutive season win total in 42 years, when Shorter went 24-6 and 22-9 in 1965-1966 and 1966-1967, respectively.

Shorter advanced to the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals in Warner’s first season and last year, posted a 10-8 record in league play, good enough for a No. 4 seed and the best SSAC finish in program history.

Warner came to Shorter in 2008 from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, one of NCAA Division III’s most successful basketball programs, where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. At Hampden-Sydney, Warner was involved in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, strength and conditioning, scouting and player development.

Warner helped guide the 2006-2007 Tigers to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship, the school’s tenth conference title and seventh in the previous 11 years, with a 77-62 win over rival Roanoke College. That year, Hampden-Sydney advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III National Basketball Tournament.

His previous coaching experience includes two years as an assistant coach at The College of William & Mary under accomplished head coach Tony Shaver and a previous stint at Hampden-Sydney in 2003-2004, when the team ascended to the national No. 1 ranking and captured yet another Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship.

Warner spent the 2002-2003 season as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Georgia, under legendary head coach Jim Harrick. He spent the previous four years as associate head basketball coach at the Darlington School in Rome.

Warner graduated from the University of Georgia in 1998 with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations. At UGA, Warner played basketball for head coach .

In high school, Warner was a two-year team captain, All-Area and All-State performer on the hardwood at Darlington while also running track, where he finished second in the state in the 800-meters during his senior year.

Warner and his wife, Karin, have two children, Aly (3) and Caroline (2). The Warners are expecting a third child, Jack, in February.

“Chad is one of the brightest and most enthusiastic young coaches I’ve ever been around; I truly believe Shorter is lucky to have him. They have a bright future with Chad as head coach.”

- Jim Harrick, former head basketball coach at , UCLA (where he won the 1995 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship), the University of Rhode Island and the University of Georgia.

“Chad is one of the better people I’ve come into contact with. He will be a great coach, but more important, a terrific leader of young people. He lives the game of basketball, he is a relentless recruiter, and I know Shorter is in good hands with him.” - Tony Shaver, headS men’s basketball coach at The College of William & Mary. “Having coached Chad and followed his growth as a person and a coach, I will tell you this: Chad is going to win and win big. He has worked for some of the best in the business. Give him time to implement his system and to recruit to that system and great things will happen for the program.C I am excited for him and for Shorter.” - Russell Turner, assistant coach for the National Basketball Association’s Golden State Warriors.

Southern States Athletic Conference www.GoShorterHawks.com 16 2009-2010 Shorter Hawk Basketball Assistant Coaches

Bryce Brickhouse Assistant Coach • 2nd Season

Bryce Brickhouse returns for his second season on the Hawks’ staff. As assistant coach, Brickhouse serves as recruiting coordinator in addition to being responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, including scouting, game planning and individual skill development.

Brickhouse played collegiate basketball at North Georgia College and State University where he graduat- ed in 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education. With the Saints, Brickhouse was a two-year starter as a member of the team from 2003-2005.

In 2003-2004, he was named Newcomer of the Year while leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. Brickhouse was North Georgia’s second leading scorer in 2004-2005, and earned All-Conference recog- nition in both campaigns.

Upon graduation, Brickhouse was selected by Georgia’s Gainesville Knights, a semi-professional team affiliated with the World Basketball Association. Brickhouse came to Shorter in 2008 after serving as an assistant coach under Jeffrey Pourchier at former Southern States Athletic Conference member Reinhardt College.

Coach Warner on Brickhouse: “I just can’t say enough about Coach Brick. I have enjoyed working alongside of him and watching him develop as a coach. He is a passionate recruiter and relates extremely well to our young men. As good as Bryce is as a coach, he is an even better support to me profes- sionally and personally. I truly appreciate the friend he has become in my life.”

Tyler Murray Assistant Coach • 2nd Season

Tyler Murray enters his second season on the Shorter Hawks’ coaching staff as an assistant coach and graduate assistant. Murray arrived at Shorter in 2008 after previously playing for and being recruited by Coach Warner at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.

At Hampden-Sydney, Murray was a three-year starter and Academic All-Conference selection as a Psychology major. He was a starter on Hampden-Sydney’s 2007 conference championship team - the school’s seventh title in 11 years.

During the Tigers’ three-game championship run, Murray averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds on his way to being named to the All-Tournament team. Murray was a three-time Hampden-Sydney Defensive Player of the Year choice and averaged 10 points and six rebounds over his career.

Coach Warner on Murray: “After recruiting and coaching Tyler, I felt confident that I knew what I was get- ting in him as a coach. He has been even better than I could have hoped for at this point. He has a great un- derstanding of how we want to play and communicates that well to our team. He also has a great understanding of me and he is able to support me so well because of that. It is really special for me as a head coach to sit next to a former player who now coaches with me. He is a great coach and great friend.”

Coach Warner on his staff: “I really feel like one of the best blessings to Shorter Basketball this year has been keeping our staff together. Both of these young men had possible opportunities to “move up” in the business, but chose to stay here and fight for this team. That is a great compliment to our school and our players. Beyond that, it is a great privilege for me to be able to work with them and call them friends.”

Charles Warner Assistant Coach • 3rd Season

Charles Warner embarks on his third season as assistant coach with the Hawks’ basketball program in 2009-2010.

Charles, a fourth generation Roman, is the father of head coach Chad Warner, and is a retired insurance agent and owner of Charles Warner Insurance Agency.

Charles graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Marketing, and also attended Shorter College for a semester in 1967. His mother (Chad’s grandmother) is a 1934 graduate of the College.

Coach Warner on his father: “I have really enjoyed having “Coach Pop” around our program the past two years. He is a great reminder to me of what really matters in life: Faith and Family. I love seeing him on the floor, on the bench, and in the locker room. The neatest thing to me though has been seeing the effect he has on the seniors each year as they say “goodbye” to our program. They always specifically mention him (usually with great emotion) and what an encouragement he is to them. I feel blessed to have him with me.”

Bill Pardue Team Chaplain • 2nd Season

Bill Pardue returns for his second season with the Hawk basketball program as team chaplain and head of the Character Development Program. The development program, originated in 2008, meets several times a month to discuss a variety of issues ranging from faith to manners and character traits.

Pardue is a former prep and collegiate football standout who signed a scholarship to play at NCAA Divi- sion II Carson-Newman. After suffering a broken collarbone, Pardue left Carson-Newman to finish his academic career at the University of Georgia and later, Berry College.

Pardue joined the staff at First Presbyterian Church in 2000 where he works as the Director of Senior and Junior High Ministries. He is now an ordained minister in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Pardue and his wife, Shana, have two children, Lizzy and Samuel.

Coach Warner on Pardue: “If we truly do want to build championship basketball teams, we must first do our part in building championship men. No one person is more important to that process than Bill. We are so grateful of the time and energy he pours into our character development program. He is able to clearly communicate the Christ driven leadership principles that we would hope to impart to all of our athletes. He clearly exemplifies the warrior’s spirit and the Christ centered heart.”

Southern States Athletic Conference www.GoShorterHawks.com 2009-2010 Shorter Hawk Basketball 35 Style of Play

Our style of play at Shorter is one that is captivating for both players and fans.

We want to develop a team that really looks to fast break at every op- portunity, using great athleticism and three point shooting prowess to provide instant offense. We believe that this is both very effective and also very intriguing to today’s players.

In the half court offense, we will continue to run the UCLA system developed and perfected by legendary coach, John Wooden.

This system promotes great spacing, great movement and great re- bounding. It is a proven system that is enjoyable to watch and enjoy- able to play in. There are many situations within the offense that allows talented players the freedom to react and make plays.

The goal of the system is to develop a sound fundamental structure that will afford each player the opportunity to use his talents to score baskets. It also provides excellent scoring opportunities for both a dominant post player and a great wing player.

On the defensive end of the floor, Shorter basketball will look to em- ploy full court pressure using both man-to-man pressure and trapping situations. We are of the belief that aggressive, fundamental basketball will allow us the best opportunity for success.

We aim to be very solid in the half court defensive setting, but we will also try to constantly force the tempo and pace with full court pressure.

We fully believe that basketball is a game that is best played when it is played with passion and excitement.

Our goal is to teach a system that is fun for the fans and players, yet one that affords us the greatest opportunity for success.

We hope that our fans and players enjoy the system that we play, but we also hope that we play with the energy and enthusiasm that the system deserves.

Enjoy Shorter basketball!

During the final week of July 2009, 28 student-athletes representing all 18 intercollegiate athletic teams at Shorter College joined eight coaches in a retreat to Glen, Montana.

Shorter College President, Dr. Harold E. Newman, and Chairman of the Shorter College Board of Trustees, Dr. Nelson Price, joined the group of athletes and coaches in a truly unique experience.

The trip focused on building leadership qualities through relation- ships and faith. Hawk basketball players Ziyadah Carter, Darius Steger, Jamie Walker, Jerrenda Wheeler and Marqise Wright joined head coach Chad Warner and assistant coaches Bryce Brickhouse and Tyler Murray on the powerful journey.

“It was awesome,” Warner said about the group’s time at Two Moose Camp Gainey Ranch, a 6,000-plus acre facility created for such purposes by Georgia native and philanthropist Harvey Gainey and his wife Annie. “When I first took the job here, Dr. Price asked me if I would be interested in pursuing this. It was a blessing to all of us and it reflects on the leadership at the College from the top down - from Dr. Price, to Dr. Newman and so on.”

Each day’s schedule for “Team Shorter” in Montana offered both spiri- tual and physical benefits.

Every morning, the group opened the day hearing testimonials by the coaches, holding devotions and breaking off into small groups that al- lowed the athletes more time to reflect with each other.

Each afternoon consisted of different activities that included a trip to Yellowstone National Park, playing volleyball or softball, tubing down a local river and hiking the scenic mountains that rose up more than 8,000 feet. Capping each day was a nightly service led by Scott Pilkington, the pastor of New Life Church of God in Orlando, Fla., and a national speaker for the Fel- lowship of Christian Athletes, who delivered inspir- ing messages and brought the athletes and coaches closer to each other and to God.

“For a lot of them, there were first time commit- ments and for others a rededication,” said Warner, who noted that Pilkington has already committed to come back to Shorter during the 2009-10 school year to lead FCA services. “When you travel across the country and find yourself in that kind of envi- ronment, you can’t help but strengthen your faith.”

During practice on Wednesday, November 6, 2008, the Shorter College men’s basket- ball team welcomed a special guest into the Winthrop-King Centre.

For Hawks’ head coach Chad Warner, it was an opportunity to spend time with one of the people who helped him begin his career.

On that day last season, NCAA Division I na- tional champion coach and former University of Georgia head man Jim Harrick spent the day with the team.

“Chad is a great, young guy and a terrific coach,” Harrick said. “We talk all the time on the phone and I want to support him.”

Warner served as a graduate assistant under Harrick at Georgia during the 2002-03 season.

“I guarantee you that there is no one more nervous than me right now,” Warner told his team prior to that day’s practice session. “But beyond that, we are humbled to have him here to evaluate us. I have told him to be harsh and tell us what we need to do to be a better team.”

The 71-year-old Harrick, who is retired from coaching, was in the region for an event that he was attending that weekend and decided to take the opportunity to visit a number of his former assistants at sur- rounding institutions.

“It is a great feeling,” Harrick said of seeing the successful careers of his former colleagues come to fruition. “I think about 15 of [my former assistants] are head coaches. It’s something that you are really proud of.”

“He is one of the greatest living basketball coaches we have,” Warner said of his mentor. “We only hope to continue his legacy.”

Harrick, who won a national championship as the head coach at UCLA in 1995, stayed for the entire practice and addressed the team afterwards.

Hawk Training Philosophy

Proper training and conditioning prepare our athletes to perform at their maximum physical capability for op- timal performance on the field of play. Our philosophy has four components: physical conditioning, spiritual well-being, strong character, and mental toughness.

Each one of these plays an intricate role in allowing our athletes to achieve success as a team member and in- dividual student. The importance of any philosophy is that it must hold true in all areas of support. At Shorter College, all of these components are met and surpassed, which allow for a successful collegiate experience.

It is our responsibility to have our athletes prepared for the rigors of collegiate athletics. Our program takes Fisher Marietta a holistic approach with all four components building a solid foundation for success during and after the Strength/Conditioning GA athlete’s college career.

Southern States Athletic Conference www.GoShorterHawks.com 2009-2010 Shorter Hawk Basketball 53 Bill Peterson, Director of Athletics

Bill Peterson is in his third year as Director of Athletics for Shorter College, having set a clear course for making Shorter one of the top athletic programs in the country.

Since being named Director of Athletics on March 26, 2007, Peterson has made the desire for overall excellence the cornerstone of Hawks Athletics. His decisions and expertise have produced a wave of firsts in a number of programs, while also allowing Shorter College to achieve its highest National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup finish (21st in 2007-2008) in the history of the school.

Numerous sports have reached never-before seen levels of success. Volleyball won the team’s first-ever South States Athletic Conference (SSAC) title in 2007. Men’s cross coun- try captured back-to-back SSAC championships in 2007 and 2008 in just its second and third years of existence. Softball has enjoyed three consecutive conference championships and three straight trips to the NAIA National Tournament. Football captured its first-ever Mid-South Conference Western Division championship in just its fourth year as a program in 2008, consequently earning its first berth into the NAIA National Playoffs. Men’s track and field won its second straight Mid-South Conference crown and a fifth-place finish at the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Nationals in St. Louis, while the women’s track and field squad enjoyed its first league outdoor title and a seventh-place finish at nationals in 2009. Women’s basketball has produced two straight 20-win campaigns while men’s basketball has won 34 games in the last two seasons.

The Hawks have burst onto the national scene under Peterson, as cheerleading captured the school’s first-ever team national championship in 2008-2009 and Justyna Mudy brought Shorter its first female individual national champion- ship by winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2009 NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Peterson continues to push the Shorter athletic program to national prominence. In January 2008, the NAIA announced that Peterson, Shorter College and Rome-Floyd County, Ga. had successfully been awarded the bid for the 2008 and 2009 NAIA National Football Championship to be held at the Hawks’ home facility, Barron Stadium. In 2009, the SSAC Men’s Basketball Tournament was held at Shorter’s Winthrop-King Cen- tre, and the SSAC softball tournament was held for the second consecutive year at the Alto Park Softball Complex, home of the Lady Hawks.

Not only does Peterson expect excellence on the field and court, but he does so in the classroom as well. In 2008-2009, 16 student-athletes were named National Scholar-Athletes, and 74 were named to conference All-Academic teams. In 2007-2008, Shorter’s men’s soccer program boasted the highest team grade-point-average in the nation.

Prior to taking the helm of Hawks athletic program, Peterson served three years at his position of recruiting coordinator for the Shorter College football team.

He came to Shorter from Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga., where he served as head baseball coach. In 2005, he led Mount Paran to a school record 24 wins and a berth in the state finals while being named the Atlanta-Journal Constitution’s Coach of the Year. Prior to coaching, Peterson was President and Co-Founder of Horizon Medical Products (HMP), a publicly traded corporation headquartered in Atlanta.

Peterson played collegiate football at Texas Lutheran College where he was a member of the 1974 NAIA national championship team, coached by the legendary Jim Wacker. He finished college at Florida State University in 1978 with a degree in Accounting.

His father, Bill Sr., is credited with bringing the professional passing game to college football. He coached at Florida State from 1960-1970, at Rice University in 1971 and the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1972-1973.

Peterson and his wife, Joanna, have four children: Will, Molly, Ben and Sam. Will was a senior tight end for the 2008 Mid-South Conference champion Shorter football team.

Southern States Athletic Conference www.GoShorterHawks.com 2009-2010 Shorter Hawk Basketball 61 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa- tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national associa- tion.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, propor- tionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student- athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the over- all participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 14 regions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are -com mitted to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, reponsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
