Northern Zone Newsletter November 2015 Message from Julie Paterson Inside this issue It is a huge disappointment to me that the Northern Zone has not yet been able 1 Message from CEO to secure the funding required to support the continued provision of the Junior 2 Community Netball Netball role We are working hard to replace the funding and will keep you 3 Coach Development updated of our progress. In the meantime we have just said farewell to Anne

4 Umpire Development Nicholson who has worked tirelessly to ensure the successful roll-out of Junior Netball in the Northern Zone over the past two years. It is a programme that we 5 Performance can largely credit an increase in the participation in our Zone again in 2015. 6 Mystics Update The challenge for us is gaining long-term contracts with funders to allow continuity of these important programmes to our sport. There is a disconnect in the system in that we are delivering a national programme which is a key pillar of the Whole of Netball Plan, and yet has so far not been looked on favourably by funders. We were extremely fortunate to have been funded for two years by Kiwisport for Junior Netball, so under the kiwsport rules, this programme is not able to be funded again, and yet Junior Netball is delivering on key objectives of both our NSO and Sport NZ. We are making great progress preparing for the National League next year. Last weekend the testing starts as part of the selection process— I am really looking forward to the eventual selection of the team and to getting this very important competition underway. The future of strong ANZC teams and the Silver Ferns depends on this competition meeting its objectives. It will also no doubt be a really good tournament to watch!

November Newsletter 2015

Community Netball Manager

Planning is a word I have heard consistently in most netball centres I have visited over the past month. This certainly rings true for the Zone Community Team. In October we spent two days reviewing 2015 and setting a clear path for 2016. Many topics that you have shared with us over the past 12 months were tabled—Side-line Behaviour, support with selection policies, governance structure, meeting guidelines, tournament packs, coach development and umpiring plans, leadership development and junior netball; just to name a few. We know we can’t do everything all at once but we have put steps in place to tackle these important areas throughout the year. Will keep in touch with progress.

The community team said farewell to one of our most passionate and dedicated members last week. Anne Nicholson, our Junior Development Officer (JDO) has come to the end of her Kiwisport contract and at this stage the Zone have been unable to secure further funding to continue with the JDO position. Anne will be hugely missed. The response to my communication about her leaving was immense. Your kind wishes and acknowledgement for Anne and her work was both a tribute to Anne and demonstrated the fantastic work she has achieved in leading the implementation of the ANZ futureFERNS programme in our Zone. Anne we all wish you well and hope to see you about the netball community again soon. ANZ futureFERNS

NNZ have announced that the ANZ futureFERNS 6v6 game format will be piloted in all netball centres who have Year 4 players that have already played ANZ futureFERNS 5v5 netball and will be Year 5 in 2016. We have nine netball centres and three satellites that this affects. I have already been in contact with you and am happy to discuss what impact this will have on your players, netball centres and competition formats. Southern

Waiuku ‘Development Day’ On Sunday November 1st while many people were trying to recover from the sensational Rugby World Cup Final, Tania Heap along with Tara Coe, Eleanor Kitching, Graham Wilson and Tracey Phillips came together to deliver the inaugural ‘Development Day’ at Waiuku Netball Centre. The players enjoyed a morning of fitness testing, skill development and were given the opportunity to attend a Strapping Course. They learnt some basic strapping techniques and the importance that strength and conditioning plays in the rehabilitation process. Thanks to Sarah Fanuatanu - Senior Physiotherapist/Director; at Otara Physio Rehab Group for providing this on the day. Sarah has agreed to offer this Strapping Course to any other netball centres which may be interested. To organise this, you can either contact Sarah at [email protected] or [email protected]. Counties Manukau Sport We farewell an old stalwart from Counties Manukau (CM) Sport, Lincoln Jefferson. Lincoln has played an integral part in the collaboration between Netball Northern Zone and CM Sport. We have worked together to deliver multi sports ‘have a go days’, where we have promoted netball to many South schools and which has supported the Zone’s AIS in-school netball programme. November Newsletter 2015

This programme has helped build links between local Primary Schools and their Netball Centres in Counties Manukau area. Through this partnership we have engaged with thousands of children, many of which have entered teams in the ANZ futureFERNS programme. We will miss your smile Lincoln and wish you well on your new endeavours. It is great to see all the familiar faces dabbling in alternate sports and/or taking time out after an arduous season. Remember to have FUN and enjoy the break while you can. Tracey Spence, Southern Netball Development Officer Coach Development

No doubt most of you are having a well-deserved break from coaching – (netball at least), however can I encourage you to start thinking about your own Personal Development. The off/preseason is the time to look at doing some of the NNZ Coaching Modules. This can provide you with resources on ‘what to coach’ and tips on how to coach effectively. So many times I hear coaches saying I wish I had done this module before the season starts. Well now you can! We have most centres throughout the Zone delivering NNZ Coaching Modules and it is just a matter of you giving them a call to register.

The NNZ Performance Coach Award Advance Coaching Modules have been completed for 2015. In our zone, NNZ delivered Game Analysis, Planning, Mental Skills and Skill Acquisition. I’m sure those that attended will agree that they were all very interesting and informative. We were also fortunate to have Waimarama Tenaumu as a guest speaker. She shared information on the Silver Ferns Game Plans which were fascinating and very helpful. The next stage for the PCA coaches is to complete their homework tasks over the 2016 Season. Tania Heap, Coach Development Officer Umpiring

Fay Meiklejohn – IUA Dedication, commitment and sacrifice is how one would describe the Umpiring career of Fay Meiklejohn from Netball North Harbour (NNH), who has made the very hard decision to retire from ANZ and International Umpiring. After gaining her NZ Award in 2004 Fay was appointed to the NZAG and Championships for the next 3 years . Her career continued to accelerate with national appointments to the Trans Tasman Championships and the NZ National Championships where she consistently umpired the final. Fay has been an ANZ Umpire for the last 7 consecutive years. She was fortunate to gain a Prime Minister Scholarship in 2010 which enabled her to travel to England to take part in their Summer league. It was here that she gained her International Umpire Award which she subsequently endorsed in 2015. Internationally she has been appointed to the South Pacific Games, World Youth Championships, Pacific Cup Series, Samoa v South Africa Series, Australia v England , Samoa v Scotland, Fast Five series and the World Netball Championships in Singapore in 2011. Apart from her commitment to her umpiring career, where she has had to cope with the many strains and sprains, back surgery and rehab and the emotional roller coaster that is high performance sport, Fay also heads one of the largest Collegiate Maths Departments in the country . However she has still found time to be on the NZ coaching panel at NNH assisting with the coaching of umpires, writing theory modules and exam papers and facilitating workshops. The Netball Northern Zone would like to thank Fay for the years she has represented us at the elite level which she has done in a very professional manner. We are also very fortunate and thankful that Fay will still be part of our umpiring community assisting with workshops and coaching .

Congratulations Fay, on what has been a very long and fulfilling umpiring career. You should be very proud of your achievements. National Umpiring Squads Announced Congratulations to the following :
