Saints Perpetua and Felicity

Perpetua and Felicity were Christian who lived during the early persecu- tion of the Church in Africa in the third century.

Vivia Perpetua was a married noblewomen who was twenty two years old and the mother of an infant, whom she was nursing. She decided to become a Christian although she knew it could mean her death. Her brother followed her and became a Christian also.

Both were catechumen, meaning they would receive instruction in the Catholic faith and be prepared for Baptism from their Catechist, Saturus. Perpetua, Saturus, Secundulus, another Catechumen, and slaves Revocatus and Felicity were arrested.

Felicity was eight months pregnant at the time. It was against the law for preg- nant women to be executed because the belief was killing a child in the womb was shedding innocent and sacred blood. Felicity was afraid that she would not give birth before the day set for their martyrdom and her companions would go on without her. Two days before the execution, Felicity went into a painful labor. She gave birth to a healthy girl who was adopted and raised by one of the Christian women of .

Perpetua’s son was raised by her mother.

Perpetua and Felicity were beheaded; the others were killed by wild beasts. They were killed at Carthage in the Roman province of Africa, present day . Felicity wrote a diary describing her imprisonment for being a Christian. After they died, it was completed by a person who witnessed their deaths. This was later called “The Passion of Perpetua and Felicity” and it is one of the oldest early Christian texts.

Saints Felicity and Perpetua are among the seven women and the eight men commemorated by name in the list of ancient martyrs from the second part of the . The Blessed Mother, St. Joseph, the Apostles and other saints are commemorated in the first part.

Saints Felicity and Perpetua are the Patron Saints of expectant mothers, ranch- ers, butchers, Carthage and Catalonia. Their feast day is March 7.
