The flowers are produced in spikes at the Order: stem tip. Flower clusters are branched, but the rest of the plant has little branching. The leaves are oval Family: with small teeth along the edges. Downy skullcap ILLINOIS STATUS grows between two and three feet tall and has the square stem that is typical of mints. The flowers are common, native two-lipped and generally blue-violet with a white spot visible on the broad, lower lip.

BEHAVIORS Downy skullcap grows in upland forests, rocky woods, wooded bluffs, upland meadows and thickets. It blooms from June through September. Its fruits are capsules with two to four nutlets. The flowers are pollinated mainly by bumble bees, but many other pollinators are attracted to the flowers, too.
