They are the pale color of eggshells--of good cloth. She uncrosses her feet at the ankles, and her right toes press forward--the same tentative motion she wearies of, day in and out, depressing the sewing machine pedal. Her body follows, leaning toward the great wooden desk. "A little girl, please," she says, her tongue lingerinq stubbornly on the "t"s and "l"s, so un-American, sticky, when she wants her words to be crisp and clear.
