NIGHT WATCH AND PRAYER VIGIL ON AND GOOD FRIDAY Maundy Thursday is the first of the three (3) great days of Holy Week, also known as the Triduum. Maundy Thursday (April 1, 2021) begins joyously as we remember and celebrate Jesus’ institution of the Holy at the Last Supper with His disciples. Likewise, following the narrative of the Gospel of John, we participate in a foot-washing as a way of entering fully into Jesus’ ministry of servanthood.

The service of Maundy Thursday concludes on a solemn tone. Members of the Altar Guild assist the clergy in stripping the altar and removing all adornment from the church. The removal of the elements of celebration from the church suggests the emptiness that follows in Christ’s crucifixion.

The is removed from the ambry and altar and taken to an Altar of Repose, this year (2021) located on the front porch of the Church. The Altar of Repose provides a place for the faithful to watch and pray with Christ, keeping vigil with Him as His disciples did in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before He died.

Traditionally, Christians from ancient times kept watch through the night at the Altar of Repose. The silence of night offers space for us to contemplate the great love that walked the Way of the Cross.

We invite you to watch and pray for one (1) hour at the Altar of Repose, from the conclusion of the Maundy Thursday Liturgy, on April 1st, beginning at 9:00pm, until Good Friday morning, April 2nd, at 6:00am. For the safety and well-being of all, we would like at least two (2) people here at all times. COVID protocols remain in place with everyone wearing a mask, bringing your own chairs, and maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet, unless you are in the same “family pod.”

Please email Beth Holland at [email protected] to sign up for time slots that best fits your need for personal devotion.

GROUNDS CLEAN UP/SPRUCE UP WORKDAY As part of our re-opening the church for services, we will have a grounds clean up/spruce up workday on Saturday March 27th beginning at 9:00am. We want everybody that can help, old, young, and in-between. Anybody that has them, may bring pruning shears, rakes, string trimmers, and tarps. Gardening gloves will be helpful. We need as many people as we can get to make light work of what needs to be done. Let’s help make our re-opening a celebration and show off our beautiful campus and grounds.

LENTEN MICROPRACTICES Every day during the season of Lent 2021, including Sundays, we will share a Micropractice on Facebook. A micropractice is a small spiritual practice. Instead of engaging in the same spiritual practice throughout Lent, the micropractices are meant to give a sample across many different styles of practices. Some are active, some are reflective. They will make you think, take action, connect with God and others, and live into your Christian life. If you are not on Facebook or would prefer a printable booklet, email Karen Bass.

CHRIST CHURCH RACIAL HEALING READING GROUP Join Us – Starting a New Book: Caste by Isabelle Wilkerson on Tuesday Evenings at 7:30-8:30pm via Zoom; Email Karen Bass to sign up. Caste -- #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER -- longlisted for the national book award. “An instant American classic and almost certainly the keynote nonfiction book of the American century thus far.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times. The Pulitzer Prize–winning, bestselling author of The Warmth of Other Suns examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives today are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions.

CREATION CARE (Every other Wednesday at 7pm, began January 20, on Zoom) Many of us want to do something about climate change, but where to start in the face of the looming crisis? The answer is to join hands with others and try to figure it out together. Our Creation Care group, which meets every other Wednesday from 7-8-ish aims to both find/discuss practical actions we can take AND to develop "stubborn optimism" (to quote the authors of The Future We Choose). We will move between a book study AND meetings that will be grounded in a specific action we can take (reducing waste, saving water, adopting alternative/green energy options, etc.) - hopefully getting some experts to speak with us along the way. Our book study will be Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We're in without Going Crazy by Joanna Macy and Chris John- stone. Here is a link to an overview of the book. If you are interested in joining us, email Kathy Smith ([email protected]) for infor- mation and the zoom invitation.

MARCH 2021 MISSION OF MERCY RECIPIENT—HAITI Haiti is our Mission of Mercy recipient for March 2020. Our funds help support the school in Haiti. Your checks should be payable to Christ Church and reference Haiti MOM in the memo line. Thank you for your support.

2021 LITURGICAL CALENDARS If you would like one for the low donation of $2.00, please contact Beth Holland at [email protected] to make arrangements to either have it mailed or stop by the office.
