Landmarks Preservation Commission December 15, 1987; Designation List 198 LP-1374 ST. JAMES THEATER (originally Erlanger Theater), 246-256 West 44th Street. Built 1926-27; architects, Warren & Wetmore. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1015, Lot 54. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the St. James Theater (originally Erlanger Theater) and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 70). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The St. James (built as the Erlanger) Theater survives today as one of the historic playhouses that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1926-27, the St. James was designed by the prominent firm of Warren & Wetmore as the last Broadway theater erected for Abraham Erlanger. Abraham Erlanger had been a principal in the infamous Klaw & Erlanger Theatrical Syndicate, which had dominated the American theater industry for several decades on either side of the turn of the century. After the break-up of the Syndicate, Klaw and Erlanger went their separate ways, and each built theaters named for themselves.

The musical was the Wrst in Broadway history to feature a predominantly Asian American cast, including Miyoshi Umeki, Keye Luke, and Pat Suzuki. Loosely based on C. Y. Lee’s 1957 hit novel of the same title, which was “more dark-humored” (R. Lee, 173), this landmark musical was a huge success both aesthetically and commercially.1 It was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning for Best Conductor and Musical Director, and was performed on national tours and in London. Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s 1961 cine- matic version of the musical was also a commercial hit. It was nomi- nated for Wve Academy Awards, including a Best Music Award; and the musical number “I Enjoy Being a Girl” remains a popular standard to this day. Yet critics accused the musical’s portrayal of Asian Amer- icans as being “condescending” and even “less than fully human” (Tacorda, 119). As a result, David Henry Hwang wrote an adaptation of the original play in 2002, reworking it to repudiate its stereotypical representation of Asian Americans.2 Ironically, however, despite a favor- able reception upon its opening in Los Angeles, Hwang’s version was ultimately criticized for spoiling the original, for losing its “charm, warmth, and wit” (Murray).

Remaking the American Family: Asian Americans on Broadway during the Cold War Era Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Seunghyun Hwang, M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2014 Thesis Committee: Lesley Ferris, Advisor Beth Kattelman Jennifer Schlueter Copyright by Seunghyun Hwang 2014 Abstract "Remaking the American Family: Asian Americans on Broadway during the Cold War Era" adds to the extant literature of theatre history by showing how an examination of Broadway productions can serve as a portal to understanding the historical emergence of Asians in their journey to become full American citizens. Based on three criteria: financial success, artistic success, and Asian content, I chose the following: South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), The Teahouse of the August Moon (1953), Flower Drum Song (1958), and A Majority of One (1959). Through closely reading these Cold War Broadway productions, I discuss the ways in which the productions suggest a revision of the way the Asian family was co-opted into American family ideology after World War II. I investigate how concepts of ethnic groups, gender, education and American democracy are reinforced, revised, reshaped, and articulated by what I define as a Cold War "traditional family" structure and travel literature. I analyze aspects of the transforming family structure in three central chapters. In Chapter 2, "The American Family Portrait: Asians Move into the Frame," I delineate a new definition of "American" that includes Asians as evidenced in the staging of these mainstream Broadway productions.
