Projects in the park have been varied including drone use for aerial photography, monitoring of native animal populations, identifying issues with/and repairing feral proof fences, monitoring feral animals, researching sustainable buildings for an ‘eco-classroom’, research of endangered mammals that may be introduced to the park and planting indigenous species. The unit culminated in a camp out on Monday 3 June.

Students packed their swags and headed for the park around 5pm where we met with local bat specialist Terry Reardon, who spoke at length about the 10 species of local microbats and their importance to the environment and agricultural industry. Terry shared an idea for a ‘bat condominium’ which is designed to provide a significant habitat for these animals who are threatened due to habitat loss.

The students in this class have thoroughly enjoyed learning about conservation and discovered many native mammals they were previously unaware existed. An idea into the future is to build awareness of the importance of conservation through increasing the use of the conservation park by other schools. Many thanks to Lynton Vonow (Park The campers and Terry were treated to a BBQ dinner cooked Manager) and David Graham (Science Coordinator) for their over the campfire followed by marshmallows. Activities on assistance and for braving the elements! the evening included spotlighting in the park and games around the campfire. Unfortunately, the rain set in around Chris Cameron 9pm causing a move to the Exhibition Centre. The next day STEM teacher when the rain stopped, students continued their work Extracting DNA Food and Fibre On Wednesday 5th of June we visited the Waite campus and learnt about grains, agriculture and what can be studied at the Waite campus and how their programmes are run.

We listened to professionals that had taken their love for agriculture and used it in their professions, as well as past students and the scientists at the Waite campus.

We were able to watch how to extract DNA from strawberries, this was done by smashing them up in a bowl, straining them and then putting various solutions with the strawberries to make the DNA float out of the strawberry.

We had a session with Viterra to learn how they manage the grains that they purchase and how they grade the grain and what happens to grain that does not meet the criteria for our food sources.

The plant doctors showed how certain microorganisms can effects the root of the plant and what soil is better for growing what crops.

We also learnt about how they breed plants to get the best plants for different conditions and to get the best yields for the climates that they are grown in.

Mr. Djukic’s Stage 2, and Mr. Phillips’ Stage 1 Creative In mid-Term 2, students across all year levels had the Arts classes attended the Adelaide CBD to visit some key opportunity to attend an on-site workshop led by instructor educational facilities that would inspire the students. Students were challenged with a 5 minute, 3 minute, 30 second, and 10 second quick sketch as a creative warmup. From there, students had a nutritious lunch at the Myer Centre food court before heading to MOD Museum on North Terrace for their exhibition ‘Waging Peace’. There, students engaged with a variety of interactive exhibits that melded technology and art for a purpose. With so little time in the day students made their way back to Birdwood with some creative inspiration in tow.

Digi Drawing Thursdays

Since the workshop run by CDW, students have been keenly interested in completing their art and accessing the school’s Wacom graphics tablets to do so. A keen group of students are spending Thursday lunches in the Digital Technologies Computer Room to access the technology and software and create some amazing pieces of digital art.

Year 9 Food Technology students attended the Adelaide Central Markets on Friday 31 May. The purpose of the excursion was to investigate and analyse the principles of food safety, perception of food solutions, and the preservation, preparation and presentation in selling food for healthy eating. Rachel Brennan said “the students tasted a range of foods from a variety of cultures.

They also began to investigate the garden harvest and the principles of seasonal produce.” Students mentioned in their post excursion surveys, that they enjoyed learning about the packaging of food, tasting different foods, learning the process of making bread, and minimising food waste. Overall, the excursion was a fantastic experience and all the students had lots of fun. Year 8 Japanese Students studying Japanese this term have been learning about the complexities of the Japanese writing system. While hosting Echizen students on their cultural exchange, we practised jikoshoukai, or self-introductions. Over the course of term 2, we have learned about family vocabulary and the ways the words reflect the cultural values of harmony and humility. It was a lot to pack into one semester, but our students showed a lot of perseverance. Well done, Y8 Japanese!

CCC Program Cows Create Careers is a Dairy program designed to promote dairy industry careers and industry education to students in years 7 – 11. Our students were introduced to the education opportunities for both vocational and university pathways. • Involving dairy farmers and industry advocates who have vision and dairy industry knowledge to encourage and support students with the project. • Supporting students in making their career decisions by providing and creating linkages to the education and employment sectors YLead Students enthusiastically completing their Football Academy Applications On the 6th June, year 8 and 9 students were privileged attend the YLead Altitude Day program at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Altitude Day is a one-day event which is created to empower Y8 and 9’s during the middle years of their school journey. The morning comprised of short presentations involving moving out of your comfort zone and embracing opportunities as challenges. Students engaged in energising group activities with students from a variety of schools within Adelaide. “It was a fun experience, I started to feel more comfortable and confident as the day progressed.” “One of the key messages I will take away is not to be afraid of challenges and not to say NO to them. Instead, I will look for a way to make the challenge work” Alysha Seager – Year 9 student leader. Students gained advice from three inspiring guest speakers of how to make good choices, build confidence to make a difference. The year 8 and 9 leaders will be leading both year level students to pass on their experience to their peers to support them to be leaders themselves and be responsible with their decisions Student Achievements Holly Smith - Naracoorte Horse Trials Inter-Schools Gymkhana - Congratulations Holly Smith, year 9 competed in the Naracoorte Earlier this year, Holly Smith, Claudia Kennedy and Horse Trials May 18th & 19th 2019. Son Ngo - Youth Poster Awards Exhibition Congratulations to Son Ngo, whose poster for Refugee Week was selected to be included in the 2019 SA Refugee Week Youth Poster Awards Exhibition. From 300 entries, 74 works from 49 schools were selected for this exhibition, held in the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery at the University of South Australia from June 3rd until 28th June. The exhibition was launched on 17th June. Son’s poster was based on a photo he took of himself with a group of his friends, including some of our Japanese exchange students Senior School Formal Senior School Formal is one of the most anticipated days in the year 12 calendar. This year’s formal took the theme of ‘Starry Night’ and was held on May 10 at The Hilton, on Victoria Square. The night was encompassed by an atmosphere of excitement and entertainment, as all immersed themselves in the various festivities of the evening. All students and guests looked fantastic and were all deserving of best dressed on the night. Some of the highlights included; Mr Drakes comical stints on the microphone as MC, cramming a few too many friends in the photo-booth for hilarious snaps. Everyone had a chance to bust out their best dance moves and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Special thanks to the formal committee for their efforts in organising this memorable event, ensuring the night was the huge success that it was. - Harrison Bitter
