Types of Licensure Each state provides its own types of, and levels for, licensure. It is important that each student investigate the type of licenses that are offered in their state. The map provides beginning information on the types and levels of licensure in place for each of the 50 states and the websites where students can confirm the licensure requirements in their own state. Generalist/Master level Social Worker Masters level services, which may be provided by MSW level social workers, include interviewing, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, case , mediation, counseling, supportive counseling, direct practice, information and referral, problem solving, supervision, consultation, education, advocacy, and the development, implementation, and administration of policies, programs and activities.

Those licensed at the generalist/MSW level generally provide services within social service agencies and/or organizations. Licensed Clinical Social Worker Provides advanced clinical skills in the areas of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions, and addictions, including severe mental illness in adults and serious emotional disturbances in children.

Generally Clinical Social Workers can provide services independently, with other clinical health professionals and/or within agencies and organizations.

Email - [email protected] Levels Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) o Masters’ of Social Work or Doctor of Social Work degree from a college or university accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. o 3,000 hours of supervised, post-degree, psychotherapy completed in not less than 24 months. Supervisors must hold a valid state license as a social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist. 1,500 hours must be direct client contact. 50 hours of direct supervision MUST be completed by an LCSW. o Montana accepts test scores from the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examinations: Advanced and Clinical. o Social work licensure applicants must complete a background check through submission of fingerprints to the Department of Justice, Montana Criminal Records prior to being licensed.
