Readability, however, is emphasized above all else. A Markdown-formatted document should be publishable as-is, as plain text, without looking like it's been marked up with tags or formatting instructions. While Markdown's syntax has been influenced by several existing text-to-HTML filters -- including Setext, atx, Textile, reStructuredText, Grutatext, and EtText -- the single biggest source of inspiration for Markdown's syntax is the format of plain text email. To this end, Markdown's syntax is comprised entirely of punctuation characters, which punctuation characters have been carefully chosen so as to look like what they mean. E.g., asterisks around a word actually look like *emphasis*. Markdown lists look like, well, lists. Even blockquotes look like quoted passages of text, assuming you've ever used email. Inline HTML Markdown's syntax is intended for one purpose: to be used as a format for writing for the web. Markdown is not a replacement for HTML, or even close to it. Its syntax is very small, corresponding only to a very small subset of HTML tags. The idea is not to create a syntax that makes it easier to insert HTML tags. AAE fosters lifelong learning, meeting the needs of a student body diverse in age, background, and interests, by providing a stimulating curriculum delivered by a qualified, supportive, and dedicated staff. Given these current times, the staff at AAE are grateful for the continued support of our community of learners and our steady enrollment during Fall, 2020 through our Distance Learning model. As always, the health and safety of our students and staff are paramount. We are eager to present our Winter class offerings and know AAE will continue to follow the guidance from state and local health officials, and follow the guidelines established by our District. In preparation for this Winter brochure, staff were surveyed and overwhelmingly wish to continue offering courses through Distance Learning. Should we be able to begin allowing limited face-to-face instruction, AAE has a plan in place and class sizes will be limited to not more than 15 students to allow for proper social distancing and some classes may be offered in a hybrid face-to-face and online format. Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Its Role in Supporting the Global Justice XML Data Model Extensible Markup Language, or "XML," is a computer programming language designed to transmit both data and the meaning of the data. XML accomplishes this by being a markup language, a mechanism that identifies different structures within a document. Structured information contains both content (such as words, pictures, or video) and an indication of what role content plays, or its meaning. XML identifies different structures by assigning data "tags" to define both the name of a data element and the format of the data within that element. Elements are combined to form objects. An XML specification defines a standard way to add markup language to documents, identifying the embedded structures in a consistent way. By applying a consistent identification structure, data can be shared between different systems, up and down the levels of agencies, across the nation, and around the world, with the ease of using the Internet. In other words, XML lays the technological foundation that supports interoperability. XML also allows structured relationships to be defined. The ability to represent objects and their relationships is key to creating a fully beneficial justice information sharing tool. A simple example can be used to illustrate this point: A "person" object may contain elements like physical descriptors (e.g., eye and hair color, height, weight), biometric data (e.g., DNA, fingerprints), and social descriptors (e.g., marital status, occupation). A "vehicle" object would also contain many elements (such as description, registration, and/or lien-holder). The relationship between these two objects—person and vehicle— presents an interesting challenge that XML can address. -

Odfweave Manual
The OdfWeave Package Max Kuhn max.kuhn@pfizer.com August 7, 2007 1 Introduction The Sweave function (Leisch, 2002) is a powerful component of R. It can be used to combine R code with LATEX so that the output of the code is embedded in the processed document. The capabilities of Sweave were later extended to HTML format in the R2HTML package. A written record of an analysis can be created using Sweave, but additional annotation of the results may be needed such as context–specific interpretation of the results. Sweave can be used to automatically create reports, but it can be difficult for researchers to add their subject–specific insight to pdf or HTML files. The odfWeave package was created so that the functionality of Sweave can used to generate documents that the end–user can easily edit. The markup language used is the Open Document Format (ODF), which is an open, non– proprietary format that encompasses text documents, presentations and spreadsheets. Version 1.0 of the specification was finalized in May of 2005 (OASIS, 2005). One year later, the format was approved for release as an ISO and IEC International Standard. There are several editors/office suites that can produce ODF files. OpenOffice is a free, open source editor that, as of version 2.0, uses ODF as the default format. odfWeave has been tested with OpenOffice to produce text documents. As of the current version, odfWeave processing of presentations and spreadsheets should be considered to be experimental (but should be supported in subsequent versions). OpenOffice can be used to export the document to MS Word, rich text format, HTML, plain text or pdf formats. -

Shieber With few exceptions, scholars would be better off writing their papers in a lightweight markup format called Markdown, rather than using a word-processing program like Microsoft Word. This post explains why, and reveals a hidden agenda as well.1 MICROSOFT WORD IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR SCHOLARLY ARTICLE PRODUCTION Before turning to lightweight markup, I review the problems with Microsoft Word as the lingua franca for producing scholarly articles. This ground has been heavily covered. (Here’s a recent example.) The problems include: Substantial learning curve. Microsoft Word is a complicated program that is difficult to use well. Appearance versus structure. Word-processing programs like Word conflate composition with typesetting. They work by having you specify how a document should look, not how it is structured. A classic example is section headings. In a typical markup language, you specify that something is a heading by marking it as a heading. In a word-processing program you might specify that something is a heading by increasing the font size and making it bold. Yes, Word has “paragraph styles”, and some people sometimes use them more or less properly, if you can figure out how. But most people don’t, or don’t do so consistently, and the resultant chaos has been well documented. It has led to a whole industry of people who specialize in massaging Word files into some semblance of consistency. Backwards compatibility. Word-processing program file formats have a tendency to change. Word itself has gone through multiple incompatible file formats in the last decades, one every couple of years. -

Introduction This document provides a high-level, non-collection specific assessment of the OpenDocument Text (ODT) file format with regard to preservation risks and the practicalities of preserving data in this format. The choice of male or female voice has been added to Siri’s features. Text Size will allow you to increase or decrease the text size within Apple apps such as Notes, Mail, Messages, and Reminders, but not in Contacts or Calendar. Accessibility Vision Voice Over is a screen reader. Adjustable speech rates and various dialects/languages are included. It can be supported by wireless braille displays Zoom allows for screen magnification. Invert Colors will change the color contrast of the screen. Speak Selection is a built-in text to speech application. Adjustable speech rates and voices are included. If enabled, it will highlight as it reads. Larger Type will increase even more than “Text Size” within General Settings. Bold Text will make text bold and more legible. Increase Contrast will make text more legible. Reduce Motion will reduce the parallax effect on the iDevice screen. Hearing Subtitles & Captioning can be provided when available. Mono Audio allows the user to adjust the audio volume balance between earphone channels. Learning Guided Access limits the user to one app by disabling the Home button, as well as restricting touch input on certain areas of the screen. Physical and Motor AssistiveTouch lets you enter multi-touch gestures using one finger or a stylus.
