During the tumultuous Padres sale situation last year, Fowler navigated the interests of the minority partners he represented – plus the Padres and Padres fans – through very trying times without a single lawsuit being filed.

  • City Renames Street Outside Petco Park in Honor of Trevor Hoffman
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, Sept. 24, 2018 CONTACT: Perette Godwin at 619-533-4511 or [email protected] City of San Diego Renames Street Outside Petco Park in Honor of Trevor Hoffman TREVOR HOFFMAN WAY WILL SHARE STREET CORNER WITH TONY GWYNN DRIVE SAN DIEGO – The San Diego City Council today approved the renaming of a street outside Petco Park in honor of San Diego Padres legend and Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman. The stretch of Park Boulevard between Imperial Avenue and Tony Gwynn Drive will be officially changed to Trevor Hoffman Way on Friday, Sept. 28, before the final home stand of the 2018 Padres season. “As one of the best closers in baseball history and a legendary member of the Padres, we couldn’t be more thrilled to honor Trevor Hoffman for his contributions to the game, his entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the joy he has given so many San Diego fans,” said Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer. “It’s especially fitting that his street will connect with Tony Gwynn Drive so the longtime teammates will share an intersection outside of Petco Park.” Following his 19-year career in Major League Baseball, Hoffman was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown on July 29. He set a National League record with 601 saves – including 552 during his 16 years as a member of the Padres. He joins Tony Gwynn and Dave Winfield as Padres in the Hall of Fame. “We’re thrilled that Padres fans will forever be able to visit the iconic intersection of Trevor Hoffman Way and Tony Gwynn Drive at Petco Park,” said Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler & General Partner Peter Seidler.

THE ROI OF ESCALATING PLAYER SALARIES IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: THE IMPACT OF PAYROLL ON FRANCHISE VALUATION by John A. Eastman Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Departmental Honors in the Department of Finance Texas Christian University Fort Worth, Texas May 5, 2014 ii THE ROI OF ESCALATING PLAYER SALARIES IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: THE IMPACT OF PAYROLL ON FRANCHISE VALUATION Project Approved: Supervising Professor: Vassil Mihov, Ph.D. Department of Finance George Low, Ph.D. Department of Marketing Peter Locke, Ph.D. Department of Finance iii ABSTRACT This study focused on the impact of payroll investment on the intrinsic value of Major League Baseball franchises. Specifically, I examined how club owners allocate capital to their most crucial and fundamental investment – players – and how payroll impacts teams’ financial and on-field performance. I addressed this question empirically first by examining the financial trends of the MLB as a whole and the thirty organizations within. Given these observations, I created a simple five-variable model of team revenue. Because outstanding research has indicated that revenue should be the basis for valuation of professional sports teams, this model was meant to reflect the strength of payroll as a predictor of franchise value relative to other key variables, particularly market size, winning percentage, club tradition, and home attendance. The results of my analysis supported my hypothesis that payroll would be a strong and statistically significant predictor of revenue and, therefore, value, so long as franchises are to be valued based on their revenues. Implications for owners, researchers who have studied the business of baseball, and fans of the sport in general are discussed.

The Padres have not confirmed or commented on the reported agreement. Cahill pitched in 50 games for the Cubs last season, all but one in relief, posting a 2.74 ERA and striking out 66 batters in 65 2/3 innings, although he did not pitch in Chicago's postseason run to the World Series championship. He did, however, make six relief appearances in the 2015 playoffs. The 28-year-old, who spent his first six Major League seasons as a starter before transitioning to the bullpen two years ago, is expected to compete for a spot in San Diego's rotation, with the bullpen a fallback option, according to the report. Cahill is a Southern California native who attended Vista High School, which is less than an hour north of San Diego.
