FOR: 2017 Adult Summer Programs FINANCIAL OBJECTIVE AND JUSTIFICATION STATEMENT

Financial objectives vary among cost centers or program areas. In general, fees are calculated to cover the direct cost of the program with a pre-determined minimum number of participants and then increased 20% to cover administrative costs. Program fees are recalculated each time they are offered to account for any changes in costs. We also consider price breaks, competition and what the market will bear when establishing program fees.

PROJECTED RESULTS / OUTCOME:

Summer programs are held June through August. The programs listed are adult programs and any youth programs added since the summer youth program fees were approved in February. Also included are 2017 Travel Service fees.

In the summer of 2016 we offered 117 adult programs with revenue of $68,173.

We are offering 115 fee-based adult programs this summer.

Daddy-Daughter Princess Ball Put on your most beautiful princess gown and invite the most charming prince you know – your daddy, of course – to the Princess Ball! (Stepfathers, grandpas and uncles are welcome to stand in for dads). Father’s Day is this weekend, so join us for a special night of memory making! The two of you will enjoy a light dinner (finger foods and mini sandwiches), a carriage ride, dancing, games and a keepsake craft. Ages 4-10. Registration deadline: June 9. Min. 12. Max. 60. It’s a Grand Day! *Adult/Child Any day is a grand day when a grandparent is in the picture, and that’s what this day is all about! You and your grandparent (or “adopted” grandparent) will have your picture taken and then make a special frame to put it in. You’ll also play games together and enjoy a yummy snack. Ages 2-4. Princess Tea Party *Adult/Child Cinderella, Jasmine, Pocahontas . . . who’s your favorite? Put on your princess gown, invite a special grown-up and join us for a royal tea party! Preschool Art & Activity Days *Adult/Child We’ll start with art and end with a fun activity to get you moving. Messy Art *Adult/Child Paint, glue, play dough and pudding are just some of the messy materials you will use. You must bring an adult to class with you. Scribble and Nibble *Adult/Child A little bit of everything best describes this class! You’ll create pictures, collages and more using a variety of art materials. Barnyard Boogie Brushes *Adult/Child Join us for this exciting dance party with a twist! Not only will kids and parents get to boogie in our barnyard, but we’ll also have easels and paint supplies set up so you can paint while you dance! Your dance moves and art skills are sure to impress our on-looking farm animal friends! This program fosters play, creativity and experiential learning that is fun for everyone. Animal Adventures There are zoo animals, farm animals, underwater animals . . . all kinds of animals! Dinosaur Camp Do you love dinosaurs? Are you ready to be a junior paleontologist? Come learn about dinosaurs, fossils and other ancient treasures! Ocean Adventures Camp What great mysteries exist in the ocean? Have you ever seen a starfish or a crab? Mad Scientist Camp Explore the wonderful world of science through hands-on experimentation. Scientific exploration will thrill your curious preschooler and keep their attention from beginning to end. Dr. Seuss Camp Dr. Seuss inspired children everywhere with his rhymes and poems in Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs & Ham and many other favorite stories. We’ll introduce your child to the wacky world of Dr. Seuss while reinforcing numbers, colors and rhyming concepts. Children will enjoy the company of delightful characters, language and illustrations while building vocabulary, literacy and math skills. Paw Patrol *Adult/Child Join Ryder and all of his Paw Patrol friends for a fun-filled Friday morning! We will work together to make our own Paw Patrol gear and then help the team out on a very important rescue mission. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse *Adult/Child Come join Mickey and the gang for a morning of fun and games - using our Mousekatools of course! Super Duper Heroes *Adult/Child Spiderman? Iron Man? Captain America? Who’s your favorite super hero? Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood *Adult/Child Come join Daniel Tiger’s wonderful Neighborhood of Make Believe! You’ll have lots of grrr-ific fun playing games, making crafts and meeting some new friends! Music, Motion & Movement *Adult/Child Get into motion and cause a commotion! We Like to Move It, Move It *Adult/Child Hey tots, do you like to move and groove? Join us for three action filled Tuesdays that are sure to keep you on your toes. Pre-School Gymnastics *Adult/Child Gymnastics provides physical exercise and helps develop strength, flexibility and self-esteem. Along with fun and frolic, children are able to experience how their bodies move, socialize with other children and enjoy the thrill of learning something new. Basic tumbling skills such as front and back rolls will introduce your child to this exciting sport. Parents participate to keep your child focused on the activities provided. Pre-School Move & Groove Camp Your child will love this introduction to the world of gymnastics and dance. The activities included in this camp promise to hold their attention and direct their energy in a positive direction. All That Jazz Every child should be introduced to dance. It helps them develop balance, control, posture, focus and fine-tuned listening skills. And because it inherently involves problem solving, pattern and sequence, it enhances higher thinking abilities. Each session of “All That Jazz” will include a warm-up, a lesson in specific dance techniques and a simple routine that incorporates those techniques. Tennis for Tots Tennis promotes physical fitness and outperforms other sports in developing personality characteristics such as sociability, creativity and assertiveness; so start your child early. Pee Wee Golf Camp *Adult/Child Join us on the course as we spend two days hitting, chipping, putting, pitching and playing the green! Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation/Parkview Sports Medicine Pee Wee Golf Tour It’s not a pro tour, but it’s just as much fun! The Pee Wee Golf Tour allows boys and girls ages 3-11 to test their skills against other young golfers on a variety of area courses. Tournament formats and fees vary for each event. Registration forms are available on our website at www.fortwayneparks.org or by calling 427-6000 to request them by mail. Awards will be given at each tournament. Mini & Little Kickers *Adult/Child This may be the only pre-school program where kicking is not only allowed, but encouraged! Basic soccer skills and terminology are the focus of this introductory program. Kickers is a non-competitive, instructional program that will help your child develop social skills and hand-eye coordination. Instruction is through demonstrations and skill games; there will be no scrimmages. Ages 2-4. Children will be grouped according to age and one adult is required to participate with each child. Itty Bitty Basketball *Adult/Child Everyone scores in this fun-filled program! Your child may not come out an all-star, but they will learn the fundamentals of basketball such as ball handling, passing and shooting. Little Sluggers: T-ball Training *Adult/Child T-Ball is a great sport for developing hand/eye coordination, social skills and it is just plain fun! Your child will be introduced to throwing, catching, hitting, base running and the mechanics of baseball in this non-competitive, instructional program. Little Sluggers instruction is conducted through demonstrations and drills; scrimmages and competitions are not part of the program. Each participant will receive a program t-shirt. LEGO Engineering Students will work in pairs to creatively build and modify a deck chair, draw-bridge, rubber band car, carousel, belt conveyer and other machines by applying basic engineering principles, such as: gearing & gear ratios, simple machines, structures, forces, motion, problem solving and communication skills. Unique LEGO kits will be used to teach STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) concepts & 21st century educational skills. LEGO Car Exploration of simple machines at an entry level is applied and discussed in depth as students creatively build and modify their very own LEGO car to take home with them. This class provides great hands-on learning and building experiences like basic engineering principles, simple and compound machines, gearing, forces in motion, integrated problem solving, communication skills, teamwork and collaboration, as well as challenges students to incorporate the traits of an engineer in a classroom setting. Creative Construction: Lego Building Challenge Who’s the most creative Lego builder out there? Join the Lego Challenge and let your imagination soar! Compete in the team challenge for kids ages 5-12 with an adult or the solo challenge for ages 9-14. You will have 200 Legos (provided by Packrat’s Corner) and a couple of hours to build something that fits the designated theme. You will name your project and we will display it at the Community Center along with a photo of you working on it. The public will be allowed to vote on Saturday and Sunday, July 8 and 9, 12:00-5:00 p.m. and Monday-Wednesday, July 10-12, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. The votes will be tallied and the top three teams and individuals in the solo challenge will receive gifts cards compliments of Hamilton Hunter Builders, Inc. Chess Camp Become a chess champion! Beginners will learn basic chess concepts and activities such as piece movements, chess puzzles and basic mating webs in the Rookie camp while Knights, who are already familiar with chess moves, focus on intermediate chess concepts and activities through chess puzzles, mating webs, a chess tournament, and blitz and bughouse competition. SuperGroup Chess Camp The SuperGroup Chess Camp is designed for boys and girls ages 6-18 with current USCF ratings and playing strengths of 400 and above. The camp will be structured as follows: G/45 USCF rated game played each day Students will record games Game analysis provided by experienced instructors The study of chess has many advantages including learning problem solving and increasing academic success. A structured setting is an integral part of improvement for advanced players. Learning in a tournament environment will increase the ability to improve concentration. Video Game Maker 101 Learn how to design and modify your own exciting arcade style games. Control characters and outcomes, then increase difficulty and add features. Snapdragons: Dungeons and Dragons for Youth Imagination rules in this new Dungeons and Dragons program! You will partake in epic adventures through storytelling and team work. Our Dungeon Master will craft for you a fantastic game experience while teaching you the basics of D&D 5th Edition. Your campaign will last for five weeks, where you will discover and play through a unique story created just for you and your fellow adventurers. The program curriculum is designed for beginners and promotes social skills, creativity, problem solving, communication skills, team building and FUN! All materials will be provided. Ages 10-17. Passion for Pottery Four steps are required to make pottery: preparing the clay, shaping the clay, decorating and glazing the item, and firing or baking for a finished appearance. You’ll complete these four steps using both hand building techniques and a potter’s wheel to shape your clay. Homemade Lava Lamp Watching a lava lamp can be mesmerizing! How would you like to make your very own to put in your bedroom? Slime Stress Ball Kids might not have a lot of stress, but they sure do love getting messy! Mosaic Birdhouse Create a unique and stylish abode for your feathered friends while learning the basic mosaic techniques of glass and tile cutting and grouting. You’ll start with a 7½” L x 7¼” W x 5½ D wood birdhouse and cover the entire structure with glass and tile and a touch of millefori here and there for accent. Explore the Honeybee Join Megan Ryan (M.Ed.) from the Southwest Honey Company on an interactive adventure of the honeybee. Children and adults will learn about the honeybee through fun, hands-on activities that include exploring a live, sealed observation hive, tasting the “fruit” of a bee’s labor, learning the benefits of honeybees and much more. River Camp Fort Wayne developed around the confluence of three rivers: the St. Joseph, the St. Marys, and the Maumee. Learn all about the role our rivers have played in the history of our city and how they are still used today. Campers will leave with a better understanding of our rivers, their challenges and benefits, as well as an enthusiasm for our waterways. Farmin’ Fun Day Camp June 12-July 28 Salomon Farm Park, 817 W. Dupont Rd. The Farmin’ Fun Day Camp provides summer fun for boys and girls ages 4-18. Lifetime Sports Academy June 5-July 21 • McMillen Park • Boys & Girls Ages 7-18 FREE TENNIS, GOLF AND SWIMMING LESSONS! The Lifetime Sports Academy is open to boys and girls ages 7-18 and offers free group lessons in the lifetime sports of golf, tennis and swimming. The program operates Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Group lessons in golf, tennis and swimming will focus on skill development, training, and participation and will be taught by certified coaches and highly trained professionals and volunteers. Participants may come as often as they wish and stay as long as they like. The Fort Wayne Community Schools summer lunch program will be available at McMillen Park for Academy participants. The Lifetime Sports Academy is funded by the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department and Lifetime Sports Academy Committee and is offered FREE to area youth. Golf Group golf lessons will be offered on Mondays and Tuesdays with practice opportunities scheduled every day. The golf lesson program is directed by PGA Professional and Manager of Golf Operations, Rick Hemsoth. Golf instructors are PGA apprentices, experienced coaches and teachers. All necessary equipment will be provided for the group lessons, however, if you have equipment, you are encouraged to bring it. Participants have the opportunity to earn free golf equipment by passing skills and rules tests. Tennis Group tennis lessons will be offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays with practice opportunities scheduled every day. Our team of highly qualified tennis instructors will be led by the Lifetime Academy Tennis Coordinator. Tennis rackets and balls will be provided for the group lessons. The program is a balance of unstructured supervised play and organized activities. Children may participate in the Pavilion Program at age 6. Learn-to-Swim Learn-to-Swim is offered in conjunction with the American Red Cross and adheres to national standards for Red Cross aquatic programs. Classes are held at Northside Pool in Bob Arnold Park for boys and girls ages 1-15. Each Learn-to-Swim session consists of eight 45-minute lessons held Tuesday through Friday over a two week period. Pre-school and Toddler lessons are 30 minutes. Four Learn-to-Swim sessions will be offered this summer. Participants must be of minimum age by June 1, 2017.

Learn-to-Swim registrations will be accepted on-line and at the Parks and Recreation Department only. (Registration will no longer be taken at the pool.) Registration deadlines one week prior to the start of each lesson. Confirmations will be mailed upon registration.

Special Needs Open Swim Open swims for children with special needs will be Mondays, 5:15-6:15 p.m. beginning June 5 at Northside Pool. No pre-registration is required. The swim is FREE. Enrichment Programs The enrichment program is an interactive review in math, reading and language arts skills. Beautiful Biomes A biome is a very large ecological area that is home to distinctive plant and animal groups that have adapted to that particular environment. The climate and geography of a region determines what type of biome can exist in that region. Major biomes include deserts, forests, rain forests, grasslands, tundra, and several types of aquatic environments. Hands on activities and crafts will allow your scientist to explore what makes up a biome and to compare how various plant and animal life has adapted to fit that biome. Ages 7-10. Salomon Farm Park 817 W. Dupont Rd. Hours: Daily, 6:00 a.m. -11:00 p.m. Salomon Farm Park is a true historic gem and a perfect location for walking, picnics, fishing and much more. The Salomon family established the farm in 1871 and gifted it to the city in 1995 to protect it from development. Our farm animals will return in late April. A typical tour is 1-2 hours long and features lots of hands on time with the animals and a discussion about composting, gardening and farm life back in the old days. The Hammer Heads Want to learn about blacksmithing? Join the club! The Hammer Heads Club is for youth ages 11-17 who want to learn this almost-forgotten craft. Local blacksmiths will teach shop safety and how to build a coal fire. You’ll learn about blacksmithing tools and how to use them while gaining hands-on experience creating your own project. The club meets one Saturday each month at the Salomon Farm Blacksmiths’ Forge. FootGolf at Mad Anthony III’s FootGolf combines soccer and golf into a fun and fast growing new sport. FootGolf originated in the Netherlands and has spread to over 16 countries throughout the world. Similar to golf, the players’ intent is to kick a ball into the hole with the least amount of strokes possible. There is a tee box, a green, bunkers, hazards and 18 holes of play (just 9 holes at MA III’s). There is par for each hole, mimicking golf’s scorecard, and you still play as a twosome, threesome or foursome. The main differences are the cups, which are 21 inches in diameter, shorter holes (most people cannot kick a soccer ball further than 50 yards) and the lack of equipment needed (no need to carry around heavy golf clubs in FootGolf!). Adult Tennis Lessons Adult tennis lessons will be offered at Bob Arnold Park. Beginning lessons will use the USA 1-2-3 program. Beginning Glass Fusing If you apply heat to glass, it will soften. If you continue to apply heat, the glass will become more fluid and flow together. Two or more pieces of glass will stick (or “fuse”) to each other. When the right kind of glass is heated and then cooled properly, the resulting fused glass piece will be solid and unbroken and can be quite beautiful if you know what you are doing. Beginners will create a fused glass gem and a 4” glass plate while learning about basic glass fusing. More experienced students may bring an additional $20 on the first night of class and create a 10”-12” bowl or plate. Chair Recovery Why give up your comfortable chair when a new exterior will bring it back to life? Bring your chair (no recliners, sofas or love seats) to the first class with fabric intact, if possible. We’ll determine the amount of material needed for your project and discuss fabric selection. You will learn basic frame repair, spring tying, pattern layout, cushion styles and furniture styles. In most cases, you will be able to reupholster your chair in the 10 weeks of class. You Can Play the Ukulele A great starting point for musicians of any age, the ukulele is an easy to learn instrument that will provide a challenge, as well as musical joy, for years to come. You will leave strumming with confidence and in possession of the skills necessary to play out of any book of ukulele music. The Civil War at Gettysburg Of the more than 2,000 land engagements of the Civil War, Gettysburg ranks the deadliest. More men actually fought and died at Gettysburg than in any other battle before or since on North American soil. Confederate and Union soldiers met by chance when a Confederate brigade sent forward for supplies observed a forward column of Meade’s cavalry. “Perspectives” Live Butterfly Display Through June 25 At the Conservatory’s newest exhibit of live butterflies, you’ll get at least three perspectives on these winged creatures as well as “up close and personal” time in our exhibit tent! With design input from Ball State University students, the garden offers you views from intimate, backyard, and global angles. Discover the route of several migrating species on the global scale, learn which plants are needed by the caterpillars of our local butterflies, and get a super-close look at the awesome wing scales, proboscis, and compound eyes of our butterfly friends. Blumengarten: A German Story July 1-November 12 From summer to fall we celebrate our German twin, the City of Gera, with a special garden. A European-style town square, casual biergarten, and practical cottage garden will give Conservatory visitors a taste of the region of Thuringia, “the green heart of Germany.” Established in medieval times but influenced by the modern era, Gera is different than familiar Bavaria. Explore the culture of Germany with interpretive displays with a spotlight on Gera respect for both nature and history. Join us in discovering more about Gera, our German sister city since 1992. Daylily Show Saturday, July 8, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Enjoy the cheerful colors and surprising variety of one of summer’s favorite flowers, the Daylily, with a flower show presented by the Fort Wayne Daylily Society. Daylilies are a lovely and durable garden flower with a surprising array of colors and forms. Enjoy the cut flower display and speak with experienced gardeners about growing them in your own yard. Artist Open Call for 2018 Conservatory Art Displays The Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory will hold an open call for artist submissions for the 2018 exhibit year, July 17-28, 2017. Artists may hang their work for display in the Conservatory’s public space for a two-month period, Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr, Sept-Oct or Nov-Dec. There is no exhibitor’s fee, but a commission on sales applies. The Conservatory hosts a public reception for the artist on a Sunday afternoon near the start of the show. To be considered, submit a CD with digital samples of your work. The Conservatory prefers art that ties in with its mission and themes; displayed work must be of high quality, family-friendly in subject, and ready to hang. Iris Sale Sunday, July 23, 12:00-3:00 pm The local iris hobbyists and growers team up once a year to offer the public the chance to purchase starts of their favorite iris varieties. Irises are a workhorse in the garden; when you grow several types they can provide color throughout the spring and early summer. June Plant Swap Saturday, June 3, 10:00-11:00 am The Conservatory’s free plant swap is coming up on the first Saturday of June. Bring at least one plant to share and take home an armful of starts from other gardeners in the area. Plants can be seedlings, divisions or full-grown plants; they could be plants grown for vegetables, flowers, fruits, groundcovers, shrubs, trees or vines. (No weeds, please!) Bring a box or bag to carry home your new babies. Everyone gets a number when they arrive and we take turns picking. The swap is free, but phone reservations are required by June 1. Senior Aqua Fit Aqua Fit is total body toning with many fun water resistance tools. The instructor will guide the class through various aerobic movements done to rhythmic music in the water. Curious About Crochet One of the greatest things about crochet is that you don’t have to invest in fancy, new materials or find room in your house to store a bunch of equipment. Acrylic Painting Paint a picture and take it home the same day! Glass Fusing If you apply heat to glass, it will soften. Two or more pieces of glass will stick (or “fuse”) to each other. When the right kind of glass is heated and then cooled properly, the resulting fused glass piece will be solid and unbroken. The June class will fuse a 7 x 7 inch curved plate. Gardening Classes Mixed Hanging Basket or Patio Pot Wednesday, June 28, 1:00-2:00 p.m. We will pot a combination of annual flowers and herbs to make a 10” patio pot or hanging basket that you can take home and enjoy for the summer.

Houseplants Wednesday, July 26, 1:00-2:00 p.m. It may be hot outside so we will work on a variety of houseplants that were started from cuttings in the greenhouse. You will have the opportunity to pot up your favorite house plant.

AARP Smart Drive Class Wednesday, June 21, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Community Center, 233 W. Main St. Brush up on your driving skills in this one-day defensive driving course for seasoned drivers. There will be a lunch break, so bring a sack lunch or take advantage of several fast food restaurants within walking distance of the Community Center. Call the 427-6460 for more information or to sign-up. Registration deadline: June 14. Please make checks payable to AARP. Fee: $20/$15 for AARP members (must have an AARP card).

Community Center Volunteer Opportunities Parks and Recreation is not just for kids! We offer numerous opportunities for retirees and senior citizens to join our family of over 200 volunteers and become involved in Community Center programs and operations.
