Many people who are infected with hepatitis C may not require treatment as long as the liver is not impaired. Blood tests are used to monitor the status of the virus. Treatment for hepatitis C typically requires a combination of drugs. Ribavirin (Rebetol, Virazole) is usually used in combination with Peginterferon Alfa-2a (Pegasys). Ribavirin helps kill the virus by causing mutations in the viral DNA. Peginterferon helps boost the immune system to fight the virus. The FDA recent- ly approved two new treatments for hepatitis C. They are sofosbuvir and simeprivir.
