+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ SPEED OF TRAFFIC IN GILSTON LANE

The Parish Council are constantly receiving complaints about the speed of traffic in Gilston Lane and we are very concerned that sooner or later there will be a serious accident.

As a narrow lane with no pavement, sharp bends and blind corners Gilston Lane is a high risk area for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike.

We ask that ALL DRIVERS using the lane take particular care at all times.

Can we also ask that you pass this message on to your visitors, be they friends or delivery services.

Thank you.

PRIEST IN CHARGE APRIL LETTER Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia.

These are the opening word of a hymn we will almost certainly sing on Easter Sunday morning at both our services. It expresses the central belief of Christians down the ages that about thirty six hours after Jesus had died on the cross on the first Good Friday, he was raised from the dead by the power of God. Forty days later he ascended back to heaven (Ascension Day) and then sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to empower and guide his disciples as they set out round the world to spread the Good News of Jesus.

The Resurrection was confirmation that his death had not been in vain. He died, or allowed himself to be killed, to complete his life’s work of sharing our human existence and bringing us into a new relationship with God that did not depend on our nationality or race or which set of laws we tried to live by. God’s love for us expressed in Jesus’ life, teaching, death and resurrection is to be received by faith. What he wants in return is that we echo that love back to him in worship and thanksgiving and then become channels of that love to all around us. As St Paul puts it Romans 13: 10, “If you love someone, you will never do them wrong; to love, then, is to obey the whole law.”

Leading up to Easter we have a full programme of reflective services which take us through the last week of Jesus life. We start on Palm Sunday with a procession from the Guide Hut to St James’ Church, starting at 9.15 am. Each evening in Holy Week up to Maundy Thursday we have a service in the evening and then on Good Friday afternoon we gather at the Foot of the Cross to reflect on Jesus’ last hour before his death. On Saturday evening we hold a vigil for Easter Eve where we inaugurate a new Easter Candle and celebrate the first Communion of Easter.

Please see elsewhere in the magazine for full details of all our services up to and beyond Easter. We look forward to welcoming you to any or all of them.

We wish you all a very happy and blessed Easter this year.

Anthony Giles.

GOOD FRIDAY – EASTER

Hot-cross buns, hot-cross buns; One a penny, two a penny, Hot-cross buns! If you have no daughters, Give them to your sons, One a penny, two a penny, Hot-cross buns! But is you have none of these little elves, Then you may eat them all yourselves.

By Christian tradition, the day of the crucifixion of Christ, the Friday immediately preceding Easter which celebrates the Resurrection. The obvious symbolism of the cross on these spicy buns, carried over from pre- Reformation days, there is also a thought which sees it as a picture of quadrants showing the four seasons.

Hot Cross Buns

1lb plain flour ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon mixed spice scant ½ pt milk 3/4oz yeast (fresh) 2-4oz butter 2oz caster sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 6 oz currents 1oz chopped candied peel sweetened milk for finishing

Put the flour, salt and mixed spice into a bowl. Warm the mile to blood heat and add the yeast and butter. Stir until yeast is dissolved, then mix in the sugar and eggs. Make a well in the flour and tip in the liquid and beat until smooth.

Turn dough onto floured board and work in currant s and candied peel. Knead dough until is it elastic and not sticky, then place in warmed greased bowl and sprinkle with a little flour, cover and leave for 1 1/2hours until doubled in bulk. Knock it down once if you like and allow to rise again. Shape the dough into 16 buns and arrange on a greased baking sheet and allow to prove until twice their size, about 15 minutes. Brush to tops with some sweetened milk.

For crosses, make a small amount of short crust pastry with white flour and roll out and cut into strips which you can fix on to the buns in crosses.

Put in hot oven 425F (Reg 7) for 15 mins. Put a tray of water in the bottom of the oven to provide a steamy atmosphere.

THE HUNDRED PARISHES SOCIETY

When the steering group was working towards what became the Hundred Parishes Society, we took inspiration from the Chiltern Society. This charitable organisation has aims very similar to our own in respect of the Chilterns, on the far side of Hertfordshire. 2015 marks that society’s 50th anniversary. Their excellent quarterly magazine illustrates how far they have come in the last half century. With 7,000 members and 400 volunteers, the Chiltern Society is the focal point for many activities in the Chilterns – leading regular walks and cycle rides, maintaining nature reserves, installing footpath gates and information boards, contributing to planning policy and much more. Whilst the Chiltern Society continues to show us the way, we will not run out of ideas for pursuing our own charitable aims here in the Hundred Parishes.

We encourage everyone to check our website’s What’s On page from time to time. It is regularly updated and currently includes more than a hundred specific activities up to the end of 2015. We show only events that are consistent with our aims to increase knowledge, enjoyment and conservation of our area’s heritage and countryside. You can select What’s On from the menu at www.hundredparishes.org.uk.

If you would like an interesting day out, there is no need to wait until an organised event comes along. Our website includes route descriptions for twenty walks that start and finish at railway stations, whilst our parish introductions give ample food for thought that we hope may tempt you to explore somewhere nearby that perhaps you don’t yet know very well. The Hundred Parishes area is full of interest.

HERTFORDSHIRE CONSTABULARY OPERATION GNOME – PROTECTING GARDENS AND ALLOTMENTS

As the first signs of spring are starting to appear in gardens and allotments across the county, Hertfordshire Constabulary is launching Operation Gnome, a new initiative to help remind residents to keep their gardens, outbuildings and allotment secure.

Spring is traditionally a time when burglars target sheds, garages and outbuildings, looking for power tools, bikes and other expensive items stored in them. They also look for tools left in gardens such as spades, gardens forks and ladders, which can be used to help them break into homes.

These are some of the ways you can make your outbuildings more secure:  Always lock your shed, preferably with two ‘hasp and staple’ locks (one near the top and one near the bottom of the door) or use or an alarmed padlock.  Secure your rear garden by locking entry gates with a padlock.  Burglars can use garden tools to break in, s make sure you securely lock away any tools after use.  Ensure boundary fences are secure and in good condition. Spiky plants along garden boundaries are good additional deterrents.  Tools and gardening equipment should be visibly marked with your postcode and house number – this can deter thieves and help police identify the rightful owner.  Remember to lock your garage door securely. Metal ‘up and over’ doors can be secured with extra locks fitted either side and/or a floor mounted locking ‘T’ bar with a closed shackle padlock. Wooden garages doors can be secured with two substantial hasps and staple locks and closed shackle padlocks (your local DIY store can advise on the most secure options).

For more detailed security advice : please visit www.herts.police.uk or contact is on [email protected] or call the non-emergency number 101.

EASTER BISCUITS

8oz Flour 4oz Butter 4oz sugar Handful of currants ½ teaspoon mixed spice and cinnamon Squeeze of lemon Beaten egg with tablespoon of brandy

Rub the butter and flour and add the sugar, currants, spices and lemon. Mix in the egg and brandy and form a paste. Place on a floured board and roll out thinly and cut into 5” rounds. Bake in a quick oven 375-400F (Reg 5-6) but watch carefully as they should not be over cooked - they should be sweet and crisp. They look pretty if served with a little bunch of primroses or violets in the middle.
