CROSSOVER

Berkeley, California was the place to be for college rugby fans this past weekend, as it played host to a doubleheader between #1 Cal vs #13 Army, and #4 Saint Mary’s vs #5 Navy. Cal entered this game a perfect 4-0 while Army entered 5-3, but had not played since November 9th. Cal would be the first to score, as flanker Sam Golla would score in the 7th minute of the match. Cal’s lead would not hold for long, as Army would score back to back tries in the 11th and 20th minute to put the Black Nights up 12-7. The Golden Bears would retake the lead in the 35th minute following hooker Jack Manzo’s try. The Bears would score again prior to half time, with winger Sam Cusano scoring his first of two tries on the day in the 39th minute, giving Cal a 19-12 lead at the half. Cusano would score early in the second half to extend Cal’s lead to 26-12. Cal would go on to score another six tries in the match to win 62-22 over Army. Fullback Max Schumacher helped lead his side to victory via a try and going 6/10 on conversions.

#4 Saint Mary’s defeated #5 Navy 43-25 to remain undefeated this year and improve their winning streak to nine in a row. Despite a close first half that ended with the Midshipmen only down 26-20, the Gaels would pull away in the second half. Saint Mary’s would score 22 points between the 56th and 66th minutes, pulling ahead 43-20. Navy would score a final try in the 77th minute to bring the final score to 43-25. Navy now sits at 9-3 and are set to face off against rivals Army next.

Elsewhere in California, Santa Clara played host to #23 Texas A&M on Sunday. Santa Clara scored first, as winger William Nelson dotted down for five points in the 13th minute. The Aggies would take a 12-10 lead in the 32nd minute following tries from flyhalf Preston Patterson and prop James Lardner. The Aggies would add to this lead in the second half, as they ran in another five tries to finish with a final score of 36-15.

In the final crossover match of the week, #11 Davenport travelled to take on #16 Indiana. This was Indiana’s first game since their win over #17 Ohio State on November 9th in the Big Ten Championship. While Davenport had also played their first game in months with the last D1A game being played on November 16th, in their loss to #3 Lindenwood. Indiana took an early lead following a penalty kick in the 3rd minute of the match. Davenport would respond with three tries before halftime, as fullback Josiah Mupeso scored in the 9th minute along with two tries from eight-man Joshua McAdam, to give Davenport a 21-3 lead at the half. Indiana would score two tries in the second half but were unable to complete the comeback as Davenport would hold on to win 28-17.

MID-SOUTH

In the lone mid-south matchup of the week #3 Lindenwood hosted #6 Arkansas State. Lindenwood would dominate the matchup, defeating Arkansas State 43-8. Flanker Cian Darling and scrumhalf Richard Fenton would both score two tries in the match, while flyhalf Evan Williams would score 13 points via a try and four conversions. Lindenwood are now 8-1 on the year with their lone loss coming from #2 Life whom they’ll face next. For Arkansas State, a confusing season continues following this loss.

#15 UCLA defeated Utah 56-0 on the road this past weekend. Winger Eric Naposki led UCLA in the win with four tries in the match, with the first three coming in the first 30 minutes of the match. This was UCLA’s first win in D1A since January 25th vs Cal Poly, as they have taken three straight losses to Cal, Arizona, and St. Mary’s since then. Utah have now fell to 0-2 and have yet to score a point this season, as they have been shutout in each of their matches this year.

Cal Poly defeated UC Santa Barbra at home 38-14. The Mustangs were able to overcome a red card to flanker Jacob Rossner in the 56th minute of the match. Inside center Patrick Madden carried his side to victory by scoring two tries and converting four kicks in the match.

Elsewhere in the California conference #19 Grand Canyon defeated San Diego State 45-3. GCU scored seven tries in the win while surrendering a lone penalty kick to San Diego State in the 70th minute.
