The botanist who does this will normally select a particular specimen and designate it as a standard of his application of the name, just as nowadays the author of a new name designates a specimen from amongst his original material as the type. This standard specimen, however, has none of the authority that attaches to a part of the original material, for it does no more than exemplify the later botanist's opinion about the original application of the name; the name is in no way permanently attached to it, and any further student of the group concerned must review critically the correctness of his predecessor's judgment and is free to differ from it. It is in our view unfortunate and misleading that specimens of this sort are called neotypes, for that suggests that they have the same sort of authority as a part of the original material has. They should rather be designated by some such term as standard specimens, or exemplars, that does not carry such an im- plication. This line of reasoning is the basis of our Art. 7, Prop. H, the rejection of which is also recommendedby the Rapporteur. In conclusion, we wish to thank our colleagues Messrs. J. E. Dandy, A. W. Exell, and W. T. Stearn for assistance and advice in the drafting of this note.

NOMINA FAMILIARUM CONSERVANDA PROPOSITA A. A. Bullock (Kew)

I have to thank many correspondents for references and suggestions following the publication in Taxon of my provisional list of family names. Very brief examina- tion of that list shows that there is a considerable overlap of names if one takes into account the circumscription of each of them and it is also clear that the application of the type method renders accurate citation a major undertaking. Following conversations with Dr. H. W. Rickett and Dr. F. A. Stafleu during their visit to Kew in the summer of 1958 I have prepared an arbitrary list of names which botanists may feel disposed to accept for conservation. It includes the families accepted by Hutchinson in the second (1959) edition of his "Families of Flowering ", with the addition of a number of families which he has not, for one reason or another, accepted. The delimitation of families will always depend upon the relative weight given to the various differential criteria available and is a taxonomic consideration. For the purpose of this list, the objective considerations of nomen- clature have been given first place. It was not thought to be necessary to give corresponding nomina rejicienda. Any name which is not included in this list, and which competes for priority by either nomenclatural or taxonomic synonymy, is to be regarded as rejected. Also, any earlier publication of the same name (by correction, if necessary, in accordance with Art. 18, note 1 of the Paris Code) is to be regarded as a rejected homonym. On the other hand, certain names that are included in the list may be regarded as synonymous under some classifications. These will compete with each other on a simple basis of priority. Thus if Ericaceae and Vacciniaceae are united, the correct name for the combined family will be Ericaceae. An exception to this rule is proposed in order to retain the name Celastraceaewhen that family is united with Hippocrateaceae, as well as a provision to ensure the retention of Clusiaceae when that family (alt. name Guttiferae) is united with Hypericaceae. If names not included in the list are required in certain classifications, the simple application of the Code will be sufficient to ensure correct usage. Most of such 154

Although additions to this list are possible, it has been made long deliberately in order to avoid difficulties in the future. Further subdivision of the phanerogams into more and more families is always a possibility as more discontinuities in character-variationare discovered or as more weight is given to discontinuities that previously have been held to be trivial from the point of view of classification. The oft-debated value of dividing Leguminosae (Fabaceae) into three families - Papi- lionaceae (Fabaceae), Caesalpiniaceae and Mimosaceae - is a good example. The three families are invariably classified in a group sharply separated from all other flowering plants and only the rank and exact delimitation of the three constituents is questioned. Those who prefer union of the three parts into one family point to the fact that it is not easy to place certain genera into one of two parts; those who prefer three families point to the unmanageable size of the three together and the great divergence of form between Vicia, Mimosa and Caesalpinia. Reference of the families in the list to their positions and (so far as is possible) rank, in the systems of Bentham and Hooker (Genera Plantarum, 1862-83), Engler and Prantl (Natiirlichen Pflanzenjamilien, ed. 1 and ed. 2) and Hutchinson (Families of Flowering Plants, ed. 2. 1959) constitutes an attempt, not always successful, to make the entries in the list mutually exclusive, * but there is so much overlapping of family limits in the different systems that only partial success is possible without making the references too cumbersome. Hutchinson's (1959) system, admitting a greater number of families than either of the other two, has been regarded as more or less basic for this list, whilst the others have been, in the main, related to it. The references are to be taken as no more than a guide and they are without taxonomic significance in relation to the writer's personal opinion. The abbreviations "B.H.", "E.P." and "Hutch." have been used throughout for the three works, whilst I.C.B.N. and I.N.G. refer respectively to the Paris (1956) edition of the Code, and to Index Nominum Genericorum. The first edition of the Pflanzenfamilien is not as a rule cited when the family concerned has been included in the published volumes of the second edition, though there is, as may be expected, a considerable difference between them. The tendency has been, however, to increase the number of families rather than to divide them into subfamilies and tribes. It is necessary to add, in this connection, that the original circumscription of the families has been neglected; this is because most of them were named at a time when relatively few of the genera were known and when phylogenetic considerations had little or no weight, whilst the facts of ontogeny were largely unknown. Even now the fact that finally similar structures may arise in different ways is not always sufficiently taken into account. References to Engler's Pflanzenreich have not, as a rule, been included since that work does not embody a complete system. There is a very complete index to it by M. T. Davis in Taxon 6 (6): 161-182 (1957). As in my prodrornus of family names (Taxon 7 (1): 1-35, and 7 (6): 158-163. 1958), I have taken Jussieu, Genera Plantarum, 1789, as a convenient early starting point for the nomenclature of families. It may be thought, in view of all the dif- ficulties of correlation of different authors' work that a more recent starting point might be better. I remain convinced that an earlier one is not practicable since the

* This is sometimes achieved by stating the parts of a named family included in the work, at other times by excluding those parts referred to other families. When such methods are too cumbersome, attention is drawn to excluded parts by simply using the expression pro parte, abbreviated to "p.p."

This content downloaded from 194.151.204.128 on Sat, 3 May 2014 08:55:22 AM All use subject to JSTOR Terms and Conditions influence of the Linnaean "classes" was then much too strong. Further, it was the elaboration of Jussieu's system that led to the system of Decandolle's Prodromus and hence to that of Bentham and Hooker; independent modifications led to Lindley's system (1830 onwards) and to Endlicher's system; the last, modified by phylogenetic speculations following the advent of the Darwinian era, led to the system of Engler and Prantl and finally to the phylogenetic systems* of Bessey and, later, of Hutchinson. The citation of the type species of the generic names of the family types was thought to be of some value. Most of the genera concerned were monotypic when described; these, and others with an indicated holotype, are cited without comment. Lectotypes are cited in a manner similar to that of Index nominum genericorum. Finally, I wish to thank my colleagues for a great deal of constructivecriticism and helpful advice, particularly N. Y.
