Laudetur Iesus Christus! Shortly after arriving here at St. Josaphat’s, last July, several parishioners approached me com- plaining about how they dislike the electric votive candles. “Father, you push a button and it doesn’t work.” Many people just refuse to light electric vo- tives simply because they are not real candles. On lady came up to me and said “I remember lighting a candle every Sunday with my mother, pressing a button just doesn’t do it!” Over the last twenty years or so more and more churches replaces their real candles with electric ones. The explanation over this runs the spectrum. New studies are also saying the electric candles cause more fires than real because no one ever checks the wiring. Many churches never got rid of the real candles and I can name almost ten of them. St. Patrick’s has always used real votives and when they completed the restora- tion of the cathedral one of the things many noticed was the new style of real votive candles called the Saint Killian Candles! These candles burn clean, no smoke, as the wax burns and melts it does so into a pool of water for easy clean-up; no scraping of glasses needed! Our own Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph makes use of the same system. These votives are simply beautiful. Our votive candle intake is very low. The parish makes $90.00 some dollars even less sometimes on the votives. This past Christmas the amount that came in was $97.00 compared to the Christmas be- fore which brought in some $300.00. People are simply not lighting candles anymore in our parish. I spoke to both the Parish Council and Financial Council about this and mentioned the St. Killian Candles showing them a brochure on it. Both coun- cils supported the idea of buying and trying this St. Killian Candles and bring back real votives in our parish. On Shrove Tuesday two candle stands were in- stalled in our church. Once 600 candles have been lit the stands will be paid off and the expense of the candles is very minimal after that. Hopefully we can regain the practice of lighting a candle in church in honor of our favorite saint, as a prayer for a loved one, or for a personal intention. The beauty of the self consuming nature of a candle re- minds us how Jesus gave Himself up totally for us. As we begin this Lenten Season we might recall that the Light of Christ Enlightens Everyone! May our new candles remind us of that and help us during this Lent to make sure we radiate the light of Christ by our lives. Holy Lent to all, Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron Martin A.
