Taupo¯’s collection of alleyway art swallowed up a few more ROBERT STEVEN buildings last week as part of the Graffiato Festival. It is well Story Place is the council’s preferred spot worth taking a wander through some of the town’s service lanes for a new civic administration building. to see what lies beyond the facade. But a new building wouldn’t reduce Taupo¯’s green space, the mayor says. Taupo¯ District Council councillors con- sidered a number of sites for a building at a confidential workshop last Wednesday. Three options were chosen for further investigation by council staff. The Story Pl site between the Great Lake Centre and Taupo¯ Library was councillors’ first preference. The site - a grassy triangle of space in front of the Great Lake Centre - is not part of the Tongariro Domain sports field and is rarely utilised, he said. Two other options are to build on the Tuwharetoa Street carpark behind Burger King and McDonalds, or at 72 Lake Terrace – site of the existing building, once the land has been cleared. The carpark location is preferred over the former council building’s site. Staff left the existing Lake Terrace building in August and September after fri- able asbestos was found and deemed to pose too great a health risk to staff for them to stay. Mayor David Trewavas said a ‘‘civic heart’’ could be created by moving council staff to Story Pl. Continued P4
