Major League Baseball's I-Team
Major League Baseball’s I-Team The I-Team is composed of players whose names contain enough unique letters to spell the team(s) for which they played. To select the team, the all-time roster for each franchise was compared to both its current name as well as the one in use when each player was a member of the team. For example, a member of the Dodgers franchise would be compared to both that moniker (regardless of the years when they played) as well as alternate names, such as the Robins, Superbas, Bridegrooms, etc., if they played during seasons when those other identities were used. However, if a franchise relocated and changed its name, the rosters would only be compared to the team name used when each respective player was a member. Using another illustration, those who played for the Senators from 1901 to 1960 were not compared to the Twins name, and vice versa. Finally, the most common name for each player was used (as determined by baseball- reference.com’s database). For example, Whitey Ford was used, not Edward Ford. MLB.COM Reds sign free agents Parra, Olivo Reliever could bolster lefty presence in ‘pen; catcher brings depth to camp February 1, 2013, 9:57 PM ET By Mark Sheldon CINCINNATI -- The Reds on Friday added some depth to their bullpen and behind the plate by signing two free agents. Lefty Manny Parra was signed to a one-year contract worth a reported $1 million, with a chance to earn an additional $400,000 in appearance bonuses. Earlier in the day, the club signed catcher Miguel Olivo to a Minor League contract with an invite to big league Spring Training as a non-roster player. To make room for Parra on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Todd Redmond was designated for assignment. Parra, 30, spent his entire pro career in the Brewers organization, including five seasons in the Majors. He was thrilled to be joining a former National League Central rival. "I was excited, especially when I heard they were interested," Parra told MLB.com. "I'm excited to have an opportunity with a team that's doing so well. I always had a ton of respect when playing against them and now I am looking forward to playing for them." Originally a prized young starting pitcher who once threw a perfect game in Triple-A, Parra didn't develop into the ace Milwaukee hoped for. He was to be moved to the bullpen in 2011 but missed the entire season with a sprained elbow ligament and back issues. In 2012, Parra was 2-3 with a 5.06 ERA in a career-high 62 appearances while earning $1.2 million.

Woods Associate Professor Graduate Student Idaho State University Idaho State University [email protected] [email protected] Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 12 (2021): How Scansis Functions On January 13, 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner, Robert D. Manfred Jr., released investigation findings confirming that the Houston Astros illegally used a video camera system to electronically steal signs during the 2017 regular season and postseason, in which they won the World Series, and early in the 2018 regular season. The findings exposed what has been referred to as “one of the biggest scandals in Major League Baseball history.”1 MLB eventually fined the organization $5 million and the Astros were forced to forfeit their first and second round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. The team’s owner, Jim Crane, also fired the general manager, Jeff Luhnow, and manager, A. J. Hinch. In this paper we analyze Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros organizational rhetoric and crisis response efforts after the organization was found guilty of cheating. Analysis spans from the beginning of the crisis on November 12, 2019 through March 12, 2020 and items analyzed include two Houston Astro press conferences and news stories published across 20 media outlets. When the city was within view, just breathing everything in let him know he could get to like this town. "I saw the steel mills and saw all the smoke," Francona said. "I took a good whiff of it and said, 'You know what? This is just like home.'" Home for Francona is New Brighton, Pa., a steel town located roughly two hours southeast of Cleveland, where Francona suited up for the Indians during the 1950s and '60s. Cleveland always felt like his second home, so Francona was thrilled to be back inside Progressive Field on Monday morning. That is where the Indians officially introduced Terry Francona -- Tito's son -- as the 42nd manager in the franchise's long history. During his press conference, Terry Francona offered a warm smile and thanked his dad for being there, along with his wife, Jean. It was clearly a special moment for the Francona family. Terry will never forget telling his dad he was going to be the manager of the Indians. "I kind of cried a little bit," Terry Francona said. "I didn't want to, but it just happens. Fair Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear fixed-effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more "full-time" years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and field, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on.

When Bo Porter became the new manager of the Houston Astros… By Brian T. Smith, November 17, 2012 Houston was home. Bo Porter knew it. The love of his life was born in the city. Spring was warm, summer scorched. The endless winters and cold world of Newark, N.J., disappeared. Porter could breathe in Houston. He had space. He felt the promise of opportunity, the potential for change. He also could dig in, plant roots, raise a faithful family and always return home. Even when Major League Baseball pulled him away. Even when The Show randomly called his name. It was 1997. Porter was 25. He'd already proved life wrong, evading Newark's South Ward to reach the Class AA level in the Chicago Cubs' farm system. But a life layered with constant travel and ceaseless restarts - 12 teams from 1997-2003, including three MLB clubs - still waited, and Porter wanted to build something that would last. He created it in Houston when he married his wife, Stacey. His mother and two brothers moved here. His son, Bryce, was born here. Now Bo lives the impossible: He loves his job, his family and the city he works in. Being the first-year manager of the Astros? That's just part of the dream. "Baseball can take you a million different places. You don't know what team you're going to be with, you don't know what city you're going to be in," Bo, 40, said. "We wanted to basically stabilize that portion of our life.
