Deathsmiles (for PC) Deathsmiles brings gothic shooting action to the PC courtesy of developer Cave, and save for a few niggles, it's an all-around excellent 2D shooter. Game studio Cave holds true to its recent promise of porting its shoot-em-up (or "shmup") catalog to Steam with the release of Deathsmiles ($19.99), the developer's follow-up to the recently released Mushihimesama . You play as one of five gothic lolitas who defend their land from a demon invasion using familiars and intense, enemy-wrecking firepower. It's a simple premise that's bolstered by huge enemies, big explosions, beautifully detailed environments, and a thrilling goth-rock score. All in all, Deathsmiles is a thoroughly enjoyable PC shooter, despite cramped environments and sprites that were considered a bit dated at the time of its original 2007 arcade release. Gothic Shmup Deathsmiles is the rare shooter that tries its hand at telling a legitimate story. The action involves five doe-eyed, prepubescent, and barely legal anime-inspired angels who use magic to defeat dark forces. It's not a game-changing narrative, but the well-drawn cutscenes and multiple endings aren't commonplace in the shmup space. In terms of gameplay, this means you control an angel and her familiar and shoot wave after wave of macabre enemies that could almost double as baddies from Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. In a novel move on Cave's part, Deathsmiles features nonlinear, branching level progression, so you don't need to tackle missions in the same way during subsequent playthroughs. Cave also includes two-player, drop-in, local co-op play, so you don't have to cast spells alone. Unfortunately, you cannot play online with others. Deathsmiles' levels are mostly horizontal-scrolling affairs, but Cave tosses in the occasional vertical-scrolling level, such as the stage that sees you descend into hell. The environments often include platforms and obstacles that impede your movement and create cramped spaces. Sadly, you don't have as much freedom to move and shoot as you can in Mushihimesama. Bullet Hell Like Mushihimesama, Deathsmiles is a member of the bullet-hell shmup sub-genre, which is the category that currently dominates the 2D shooter space. The genre is known for its ridiculous difficulty, and for the sheer number of enemy projectiles that make bobbing, weaving, and daredevil maneuvering essential. Despite the huge challenge, Deathsmiles isn't unfair. Your character's heart-shaped hitbox, the area that causes the game to recognize collisions, is so small that it gives you the wiggle room to weave between the bullet curtains. In fact, bullets can graze your character's sprite and not register as a hit. Each angel flies into battle with a familiar, which shoots when you shoot, and selects an enemy when you activate the lock-on targeting system. Familiars have defensive purposes, too, as they can block enemy bullets. Deathsmiles also ditches the one-hit-kill mechanic, which is a genre staple, by giving your character a life bar. This is a great addition for those new to bullet-hell shooters. This extra protection gives you the extra courage to fly directly into a bullet storm to inflict huge damage on the hulking enemies—it's incredibly thrilling. The energetic goth-rock soundtrack hypes you into wanting to cause mass destruction, too. The Big Score Deathsmiles gives you unlimited continues (that is, the ability to continue playing after dying), but true genre fans limit themselves to three lives and zero continues to simulate the arcade experience of chasing the much-desired one-credit clear. In fact, if you choose to continue, Deathsmiles resets your stage score and Item Counter to zero, thus making it unlikely that you'll see scores that reach into the heavenly seven-digit range. Enemies drop items that add to your Item Counter. This number, located in the lower-left portion of the screen, maxes out at 1,000. When the Item Counter reaches 1,000, you can manually enter a Power Up mode that greatly enhances your firepower in exchange for draining Item Counter points. Wise use of this power-up lets you absolutely wreck the opposing forces. The Item Counter can also be used as a score multiplier. Once you reach the 1,000 Item Counter mark, any items your character absorbs acts as a point bonus, up to 10,000 points. In addition, when a non-boss enemy is destroyed, it fires a "counter bullet." If your familiar is hit by it, your Item Counter increases, which leads to an increased score. If you want to rule the leaderboards, it's vital that you master the Item Counter mechanic. Unfortunately, Deathsmiles doesn't explain how the scoring or chaining systems work; I had to research them online. You can play without doing the research, but if you want to master the game, you'll have to do some digging, too. I prefer the way that Ikaruga, Treasure's beloved shmup that's also on Steam, thoroughly and clearly explains its mechanics. On the upside, Deathsmiles lets you save your playthroughs and rewatch them at a later time so you can see your strengths and weaknesses. Steam Features Deathsmiles has a paltry amount of tweaking options, which isn't too surprising as this appears to be a port of the version. Xbox controller prompts live on the screen even if you're playing with a keyboard, and Deathsmiles has the additional difficulty levels, and the Ver 1.1 (increased Item Counter limit, controllable familiars) and Mega Black Label (new stage and playable character) content that appeared in the Xbox 360 version. You can't adjust the 1080p resolution, but can play Deathsmiles in 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, and tweak the horizontal and vertical zoom to your liking. There's an option to change the border art, but there aren't many selections available. Cave includes a much-needed visual filter to smooth out the sprites' rough edges. Usually, sprite filters lead to beautiful graphics being transformed into smudged messes (see SNK Playmore's The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match Final Edition and The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match), but they're quite attractive here as the unfiltered sprites are hard on the eye. Deathsmiles also supports Steam Cloud Saves, four dozen Steam Achievements, Steam Trading Cards, and Steam Leaderboards. Angel Fire With Deathsmiles, Cave brings another classic shmup to PC. The game's fast action, gothic visuals, lifebar, adjustable difficulty, and accessible scoring system make it a great bullet-hell shooter for both genre greenhorns and veterans. Deathsmiles' visuals are no doubt dated, but if you're a fan of bullet-hell shooters, this is another title that should live in your library. Deathsmiles I & II announced for PS4, , and Switch.
