Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. BIO Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Lynne Byrem) on October 13, 1946 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, is an American country singer and songwriter. A career that has spanned many decades and touched the hearts of millions of music fans. In March 2017 Lacy J Dalton was inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame. She’s one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music – the woman People Magazine called “Country’s Bonnie Raitt”. From the first time Lacy J Dalton caught the public’s ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, has been a mainstay of Country Music. When you sit to listen to a Lacy J Dalton album, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she’s not merely performing a ten-song set, she’s bringing each and every tune to life. It’s as if they were all written especially for her. Prior to signing with Harbor Records in 1978 as Jill Croston, she like many before her, held many jobs to survive and support her family. As a truck stop waitress and singer, she would wait tables and then jump on stage to sing a few songs. Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music “Top New Female Vocalist of the Year”. Then in 1980 Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with "Crazy Blue Eyes", written together with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, a song that raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts. -

Country Music Country music is a genre of popular music that originated in the rural South in the 1920s, with roots in fiddle music, old-time music, blues and various types of folk music. Originally called “hillbilly music” and sometimes called “country and western,” the name “country music” or simply “country” gained popularity in the 1940s. Many recent country artists use elements of pop and rock. Country music often consists in ballads with simple forms and harmonies, accompanied by guitar or banjo with a fiddle. Country bands now often include a steel guitar, bass and drums. Country Music in Missouri Missourians love country music, as evidenced by the large number of country music radio stations, the number of country artists on festivals and presented by concert venues around the state, the country music artists who make their home and perform regularly in the popular tourist destination of Branson, Missouri, and the many Missouri musicians and bands who play country music in the bars and clubs in their local community. “The Sources of Country Music,” a painting by well-known Missouri artist Thomas Hart Benton hangs in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. Ralph Peer (1892-1960), born in Independence, Missouri, worked for Columbia Records in Kansas City until 1920 when he took a job for OKeh Records in New York and supervised the recording of “Crazy Blues” by Mamie Smith, the first blues recording aimed at African- Americans. In 1924 he supervised the first commercial recording session in New Orleans, recording jazz, blues and gospel music. -

CHRIS KNIGHT Almost Daylight “It’s hard to know how people are gonna react,” Chris Knight says of Almost Daylight, his ninth album and first new recording in over seven years. “I’ve written songs about a lot of different things going all the way back to my first record, and some folks still think ‘somebody kills somebody’ is all I write about. NOTE CHARLIE DANIELS AND “THE DEVIL” IN THE DETAILS: WHAT THE COPYRIGHT OFFICE’S RESPONSE TO THE TERMINATION GAP FORESHADOWS ABOUT THE UPCOMING STATUTORY TERMINATION PERIOD Joshua Beldner* ABSTRACT In 2013, authors of copyrighted works and their statutory heirs will have the first opportunity to terminate assignments of their copyrights and enjoy a second opportunity to exploit their works under 17 U.S.C. § 203. However, in addition to the statutory requirements, many authors like Charlie Daniels, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen face an additional obstacle: the termination gap. The termination gap arises in when authors entered term songwriter’s agreements or other multiyear agreements prior to January 1, 1978 to assign their copyrighted works but did not create these works until after January 1, 1978, the effective date of the Copyright Act of 1976 and Section 203. Due to an ambiguity in the language of Section 203, it is unclear whether authors affected by the termination gap can actually terminate their assignments under Section 203 or whether they must wait longer to terminate their works under Section 304. The Copyright Office had the first opportunity to address the issue through its rulemaking process but did not offer an authoritative interpretation of Section 203, leaving it to the courts or Congress to address the termination gap. The Copyright Office’s conservative rulemaking leaves authors and their heirs vulnerable to courts who have not always respected Congress’s intent to give authors an inalienable termination right and to a Congress that in recent years has at times shown more fidelity to larger business interests than to individual authors. -

This jaunty romp through the origins and future (well, “future” Shopping meaning post-1980, since this British documentary series was produced from 1976-1980) will leave you both humming along and begging for more. Links Contact Us Each episode explores a different facet of popular music’s roots. The first episode provides an introduction that previews the sixteen episodes to come: its beginnings in Africa, ragtime, jazz, blues, vaudeville/music hall, Tin Pan Alley, musicals, swing, rhythm and blues, country, songs of war and protest, rock and roll, The Beatles, “sour” rock, glitter rock, and new directions. Each episode is filled with rare footage, great performances, and interviews with experts. The series is best when it perfectly pairs commentators and subjects. Eubie Blake is a joy to watch as he explains ragtime and syncopation. Liberace taking on vaudeville, music hall, and Vegas is a campy treat. Stephen Sondheim telling us about the development of the musical? That’s a no-brainer. A few of the commentators are...well...acquired tastes. Poet/playwright/lightning rod Amiri Baraka might be an expert on jazz, but his more inflammatory comments are a bit hard to swallow. -

One of the many misconception about country music is that its audience is strictly southern and rural; my northern urban working class family listened exclusively to country music. As a teenager I was was more interested in Motown than Nashville, but by the time I reached my early thirties I had became a serious country music fan.
