  • Persona, Autobiography and the Magic of Retrospection in Bruce Springsteen's Late Career
Persona Studies 2019, vol. 5, no. 1 BRILLIANT DISGUISES: PERSONA, AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND THE MAGIC OF RETROSPECTION IN BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN’S LATE CAREER RICHARD ELLIOTT ABSTRACT Popular musicians with long careers provide rich source material for the study of persona, authenticity, endurance and the maintenance (and reinvention) of significant bodies of work. The songs of successful artists create a soundtrack not only to their own lives, but also to those of their audiences, and to the times in which they were created and to which they bore witness. The work of singers who continue to perform after several decades can be heard in terms of their ‘late voice’ (Elliott 2015a), a concept that has potentially useful insights for the study of musical persona. This article exploits this potential by considering how musical persona is de- and re-constructed in performance. I base my articulation of the relationship between persona, life-writing and retrospective narrativity on a close reading of two late texts by Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run, the autobiography he published in 2016, and Springsteen on Broadway, the audiovisual record of a show that ran from October 2017 to December 2018. In these texts, Springsteen uses the metaphor of the ‘magic trick’ as a framing device to shuttle between the roles of autobiographical myth-breaker and lyrical protagonist. He repeatedly highlights his songs as fictions that bear little relation to his actual life, while also showing awareness that, as often happens with popular song, he has been mapped onto his characters in ways that prove vital for their sense of authenticity.

  • Podcast #44- a Psychologist Analyzes Bruce Springsteen I Want to Offer up Some Thoughts About the Psychology of Bruce
1 Podcast #44- A Psychologist Analyzes Bruce Springsteen I want to offer up some thoughts about the psychology of Bruce Springsteen today. Now, Springsteen’s psyche isn’t the easiest thing for me to analyze, I must admit. The reason is that he is also my musical hero. I’ve been a fan since 1969 when he ruled the musical scene on the Jersey Shore where I grew up. In fact, he lived in my neighborhood and played at my high school prom. So, I love his music and, well, frankly, I idealize him as a performer and songwriter. Just as shrinks aren’t supposed to treat anyone in their own family, so too it feels awkward wearing my therapist hat trying to understand Springsteen’s psyche. It’s hard to be objective. Fortunately, I’m greatly aided by his highly revealing and soul-searching autobiography, Born to Run, and, secondarily by his intimate storytelling in his one-man Broadway show, Springsteen on Broadway. Springsteen’s ruthless honesty and clear-eyed introspection no doubt derive, in part, from the fact that he has been in psychotherapy for over 30 years, much of it with 2 psychiatrist, Wayne Myers—therapeutic work that he says lay at the heart of the autobiography. For someone so prominent to talk about his mental illness—in Springsteen’s case it was a profound and long standing depression--has made it safe for others to do the same. Springsteen’s depression found its roots in a childhood filled with neglect, emotional cruelty, and unstable attachments. His father, Doug, was an explosive alcoholic tormented by persecutory and paranoid thoughts.

ISSN 2053-8804 Woody Guthrie Annual, 3 (2017): Arévalo Mateus: Guthrie, Dylan, and Musical Theatre Girl from the North Country and Woody Sez: Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Musical Theatre ! Jorge Arévalo Mateus ! Politics is theater. It doesn’t matter if you win. You make a statement. You say, I’m here, pay attention to me. – Harvey! Milk ! When Lady Gaga opens her concert with Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” and Bob Dylan garners the Nobel Prize for Literature (in 2016), it is apparent that creative work by these cultural titans has wandered into new regions of art, entertainment, and public consumption.1 Recent productions of musical theatre pieces built around Guthrie and Dylan material presents a rather novel development in the ongoing popularisation and canonisation of both artists — each of whom has been inextricably associated with the notion of the American “common man,” a mythic creature that remains firmly ensconced in the popular imagination. The prolific perpetuation of mythmaking to new audiences, advanced by the distinct yet sometimes overlapping Guthrie and Dylan camps, and nearly bordering on religious and/or political obsession, demonstrates that while you can’t have one without the other, the ways of presenting their work is most certainly not limited to folk music collaborations by established or new artists, the release of new or reissued recordings, or the ad infinitum cover versions that appear in public, private, or academic settings. While musical theatre history has long occupied a “populist” space where social, political, and economic themes occasionally flow into the cultural mainstream of popular entertainment, these new theatre works expose distinct differences in how Guthrie and Dylan each experienced and engaged with the world, to say little of how their legacies continue to be constructed.

CRANKING UP ‘THE AMP’ BY LISA WHITE UPGRADES, REBRANDING DESIGNED TO FURTHER HEIGHTEN PROFILE OF ST. AUGUSTINE AMPHITHEATRE AND PONTE VEDRA CONCERT HALL . Amphitheatre kicked o its main-stage concert season March 1 with a sold-out show by Alabama, guests at the Florida venue couldn’t help but notice the changes. The 4,000-seat facility had been expanded by 700 seats, and a new food truck area provided fresh local options beyond the traditional concession stands. “We sell out a lot of our shows quickly, so we knew the demand was Athere and the ability to bring in bigger acts,” said Gabe Pellicer, assistant director of the venue and the adjacent Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, about the new seats. “We knew we had a lot of momentum, so we went for it.” The changes coincide with a rebranding for what’s now being called The Amp St. Augustine, including new graphics and brand colors and a fresh tagline — “Big Acts, Small Venue” — that echoes Pellicer’s words. The rebranding eorts are among a continuing eort to create a nationally known venue in a small market. “We felt like we ran into a fork in the road,” Pellicer said. “Do we create more revenue, more shows or a better experience? We’re a government-run venue that doesn’t have to chase prots, so we decided to make it the best we possibly could.” Owned and operated by the cultural events division of St. Johns County, The Amp hosts over 40 concerts and multiple community events annually, including the Saturday Farmers Market, held year-round, and the Sing Out Loud Festival, Florida’s largest free live entertainment festival and benet, held every weekend in September.

Whereas 1 Henry VI deals primarily with the loss of England's French territories and the political machinations leading up to the Wars of the Roses, and 3 Henry VI deals with the horrors of that conflict, 2 Henry VI focuses on the King's inability to quell the bickering of his nobles, the death of his trusted King Henry VI: Pt. 2 Duke Humphrey of Gloucester, the rise of King Henry VI: Pt. 2 Duke of York and the inevitability of armed conflict. Henry VI may be viewed as a study in insurrection, which moves from the private and personal jostlings in the court in Part 1 to outright civil war in Part 3. In Part 2 the discord between prominent state officials, notably Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, and Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester, spreads to the common people, fomenting an abortive rebellion, lead by the rascally Kentishman, Jack Cade. With the death of Humphrey, the period of regency for the naive Henry effectively comes to an end, and the unworldly monarch is helplessly exposed to the interminable strife between the factions of the houses King Henry VI: Pt. 2 York and of Lancaster. The structure of the play differs from the other two parts in that there is a central rustic idyll Act 4populated by clownish characters, which recalls the idyllic centrepieces of comedies like A Midsummer Night's Dream and As You Like It.
