Jane MacDonald has been interested in Japanese and crafts for over twenty years, developing a specialty in the craft of sashiko stitching and design. Initially drawn to the quality and detail in the workmanship of Japanese textiles, Jane now teaches sashiko extensively throughout Australia and internationally.

Jane is renowned as a patient teacher who is diligent in providing an enjoyable learning environment for all levels and abilities. Jane likes to inspire students with original ideas and techniques in the gentle craft of sashiko, branching into other forms of sashiko including one sashiko, boro-inspired designs and kogin stitching. Rachelle Denneny

Rachelle grew up in the Flinders Ranges in SA and moved to Adelaide when she was 18 years old, working as a Florist from the time she left school. She is now a mum to three kids ages 13, 15 and 17 and has been quilting for approx. 15 years and teaching for 10 of those. She has won multiple awards for her quilts both here in Australia and overseas.

She is an experienced teacher with classes for all skill levels ranging from Beginners, Machine Applique, Mystery Days and Pre-cut Quilt Classes. Specializing in Machine Quilting from an Introduction Class through to Feathers, Trapunto and Grid work.

Mary Hitchens

Mary’s loves are all things hand done. Applique by needle turn, reverse, blanket stitch, layered cut back etc. Hand and paper piecing also feature in her work along with a deep love of reproduction and hexagon quilts.

Mary was the winner of the prestigious 2011 Rajah award at AQC, and is a well-known teacher and tireless guild worker. A highlight of her quilting career was creating the renowned Mary McKillop quilt which now resides in the Mary Mackillop Museum in Sydney.

Carol Nicholls

Carol is the owner of Sewn and Quilted, a shop which opened around 6 years ago. Her love of all things patchwork has spanned the last 20 years, and started when she took a patchwork course while living in the USA.

She has developed a vast array of patchwork skills over the years, and is passionate about passing on her knowledge to students of all levels. While she has a love of hand piecing, applique and machine piecing, she also specializes in Foundation Paper Piecing, with Sewn and Quilted being a Certified Quiltworx Shop for the past 5 years.

More recently, Carol has been having a lot of fun teaching fabric covered boxes and notebooks!

Class Description Class Fee

This is a sample based technique workshop that covers some $195 2-day class: Sashiko aspects of Sashiko including how to transfer a pattern, and Plus kit fee th th the simple techniques to achieve the “grain of rice” look. Also Monday 15 & Tuesday 16 January and covered is Hitomezashi (one stitch Sashiko) which is easy and requirements 10am – 4pm enjoyable to do, and also Kogin-zachi which is a technique list to be from the North West of Japan advised The projects below will be covered in the class:

FOUNDATION PAPER PIECING with Carol Nicholls

Our focus for each of these classes will be Foundation Paper Piecing. However, this year we are also offering the option of working on some of our Block of the Month quilts: “Getting to Know Hue” or “While the Cat’s Away” (machine piecing aspect).

These classes are suitable for all skill levels – if you have never tackled Foundation Piecing before, or you’ve had a go but couldn’t quite ‘get it’, right through to those who are confident with the process and are ready to start a new project. Wherever you’re at with your Foundation Piecing we’d love to have you come along and join us.

The great thing about having a 5-day class or a 3-day class (or both!) is that you get dedicated time to really conquer the FPP technique or more challenging piecing techniques in the BOM programs, to make great headway with your project. You can choose from a large selection of patterns:

We have the Quiltworx “Vintage Rose” kit available as a Kaffe Fassett option, or colourwheel option. Or maybe you would like to try one of the new BeColourful patterns that have just been released! We will certainly be checking out these gorgeous quilts in Houston this year!!

General Information

Payment information: To confirm your spot, a non-refundable deposit of $50 is required. The balance due may be paid off in $100 increments each month (see payment schedule on enrolment form). Full payment is due by Friday 15/12/17.

In addition to the cost of each course you will need to purchase a pattern and your choice of kit or fabrics, and any equipment required to make the kit/quilt etc.

Payments (less $50 deposit) are refundable only up to 31 st December, 2017. After this time, no refunds will be made.

If you are unable to attend for any reason, you are welcome to transfer your enrolment to another person, but please understand this is the responsibility of the person enrolled.

Where: One Community Church, 184 Surrey Road, Blackburn, Vic 3130 (opp. Blackburn Primary)

This is a fantastic venue - air-conditioned, and on the ground floor with no stairs involved to access the classrooms. There is plenty of on-site all day parking. The classrooms will be secured each evening enabling you to leave your machine/sewing and work area set up for the entire duration of each course if you are attending for more than 1 day.

Class Times: Formal tuition times will be 10am – 4pm each day (4.30pm for Rachelle’s classes)

Registration will be from 9.40am on day 1 of each class, and the classroom/s will be open from 9.45am each subsequent day for ‘settle in’ time prior to the classes commencing at 10am.

For your convenience, there will also be optional extended sewing time until 5.30pm available Mon – Thurs the first week, and Mon – Wed the second week! No teaching during these times, however if you wish to do some extra work on your project, this will provide the perfect opportunity for you to do so.

Refreshments/Meals: Morning & afternoon tea each day, on-going tea and coffee are all provided for you! You will need to provide your own lunch – however there are nearby shops, and an on-site café (which we hope will have re- opened after their summer break!)

Accommodation: If you are travelling from a distance and require accommodation, there are a number of nearby places that may be suitable for you to stay. Please check for motels and bed and breakfast in nearby suburbs.

Thursday evening dinner: For anyone interested, we will again be organising our very popular dinner out on Thursday evening 18/1 at the Blackburn Hotel. This is optional and will be at your own cost, but it is a great way to celebrate the week! Husbands/partners welcome to join us too!
